Claims
- 1. A composition comprising:
- (a) a plurality of susceptors having the capability of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, each of said susceptors comprising a non-magnetic particle having a surface bearing a thin, continuous, magnetic film capable of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, wherein said thin, continuous, magnetic film is in direct contact with said surface of said non-magnetic particle, said susceptors disposed in
- (b) a matrix non-reflective of radio frequency energy, said matrix capable of being heated when said composition is subjected to magnetically coupled radio frequency energy.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said susceptors have a regular geometric shape.
- 3. The composition of claim 2, wherein said shape is spheroidal.
- 4. The composition of claim 2, wherein said shape is acicular.
- 5. The composition of claim 2, wherein said shape is that of a rod.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein said susceptors have an irregular shape.
- 7. The composition of claim 1, wherein said susceptors are flat.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said flat susceptors are flakes.
- 9. The composition of claim 8, wherein said flakes comprise mica.
- 10. The composition of claim 1, wherein said film has a thickness of from about 10 to about 10,000 .ANG..
- 11. The composition of claim 1, wherein said film is inorganic.
- 12. The composition of claim 11, wherein said inorganic film is an alloy of iron, cobalt, or nickel.
- 13. The composition of claim 12, wherein said alloy is stainless steel.
- 14. The composition of claim 11, wherein said inorganic film is an oxide of a metal.
- 15. The composition of claim 14, wherein said oxide of a metal is a ferrite.
- 16. The composition of claim 11, wherein said film is made of metal.
- 17. The composition of claim 16, wherein said film has a thickness of from about 10 to about 1,000 .ANG..
- 18. The composition of claim 16, wherein said film has a thickness of from about 20 to about 500 .ANG..
- 19. The composition of claim 16, wherein said metal is selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, and nickel.
- 20. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an electrically insulating coating deposited over said magnetic film.
- 21. The composition of claim 1, wherein said particle is non-conductive.
- 22. The composition of claim 1, wherein said particle is selected from the group consisting of glass, ceramic, and polymeric material.
- 23. The composition of claim 22, wherein said ceramic is selected from the group consisting of quartz, mica, and inorganic salt.
- 24. The composition of claim 1, wherein said matrix is flowable.
- 25. The composition of claim 1, wherein said matrix is non-flowable.
- 26. The composition of claim 1, wherein said thin, continuous, magnetic film had been applied to said surface of said non-magnetic particle by means of deposition under vacuum conditions.
- 27. The composition claim 1, wherein said matrix comprises a polymer.
- 28. The composition of claim 1, wherein said matrix is a member of the group consisting of waxes, silicone rubbers, heat shrinkable rubbers, and hot-melt adhesives.
- 29. A method of preparing a hot-melt adhesive capable of being heated by magnetically coupled radio frequency energy comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing non-magnetic particles, each of which has a surface;
- (b) depositing a thin, continuous, magnetic film on the surface of each of said non-magnetic particles; and
- (c) incorporating said non-magnetic particles bearing said magnetic film into a hot-melt adhesive matrix.
- 30. A method of preparing a hot-melt adhesive capable of being heated by magnetically coupled radio frequency energy comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a non-magnetic, hot-melt adhesive particle having a surface; and
- (b) applying a thin, continuous, magnetic film to the surface of said adhesive particle.
- 31. A composition comprising:
- (a) a plurality of susceptors having the capability of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, each of said susceptors comprising a non-magnetic particle having a surface bearing a thin, continuous, magnetic film capable of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, wherein said thin, continuous, magnetic film is in direct contact with said surface of said non-magnetic particle, said susceptors disposed in
- (b) a matrix non-reflective of radio frequency energy, wherein said composition is capable of being heated when exposed to magnetically coupled radio frequency energy provided by an induction heater set at a frequency ranging from 5 to 8 MHz, said heater having a coil characterized by 5 turns of 1/4-inch outer diameter copper tubing, an inner coil diameter of 1.25 in., and a coil length of 1.75 in.
- 32. A composition comprising a plurality of susceptors having the capability of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, each of said susceptors comprising a non-magnetic particle being granular, acicular, a plate or a flake in shape and having a surface bearing a thin, continuous, magnetic film capable of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, wherein said thin, continuous magnetic film is in direct contact with said surface of said non-magnetic particle, said susceptors disposed in a matrix non-reflective of radio frequency energy, said matrix capable of being heated when said composition is subjected to magnetically coupled radio frequency energy.
- 33. A composition comprising a plurality of susceptors having the capability of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, each of said susceptors comprising a non-magnetic particle having a surface bearing a thin, continuous, magnetic film capable of absorbing magnetically coupled radio frequency energy, wherein said thin, continuous magnetic film is in direct contact with said surface of said non-magnetic particle, said susceptors disposed in a matrix non-reflective of radio frequency energy, said matrix being polymeric or wax, and capable of being heated when said composition is subjected to magnetically coupled radio frequency energy.
