Claims
- 1. An autorack rail road car having a car body for the transport of automobiles, the car body being supported for rolling motion along rail road tracks by rail road car trucks, and at least one of the trucks having wheels whose diameter is greater than 33 inches.
- 2. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the trucks has wheels that are at least 36 inches in diameter.
- 3. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the trucks has wheels that are at least 38 inches in diameter.
- 4. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein said car is ballasted.
- 5. The autorack rail road car of claim 4 wherein said rail road car includes at least two rail car unit bodies joined by an articulated connector, and at least one of said unit bodies is unevenly ballasted along its length.
- 6. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the trucks has an overall vertical spring rate of less than 30,000 Lbs./in.
- 7. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the trucks has an overall vertical spring rate of less than 20,000 Lbs./in.
- 8. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of said trucks has an overall vertical spring rate is in the range of 10,000 Lbs/in. to 25,000 Lbs./in.
- 9. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the trucks is a swing motion truck.
- 10. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein:
said truck includes a pair of first and second side frames and a transversely oriented truck bolster mounted between said side frames; and the side frames have an equivalent pendulum length Leq greater than 10 inches.
- 11. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of said trucks is free of unsprung lateral cross-members.
- 12. The autorack rail road car of claim 11 wherein at least said one truck is free of a transom.
- 13. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein:
at least one of the trucks has a pair of first and second spaced apart side frames, and a transversely oriented truck bolster resiliently mounted to said side frames; said truck bolster has a first end resiliently connected to said first side frame and a second end resiliently connected to said second side frame friction dampers are mounted at each of said ends of said bolster; said friction dampers including at least a first end inboard friction damper and a first end outboard friction damper, said first end inboard and outboard friction dampers being spaced from each other along said bolster; said dampers being biased to exert a squaring restorative moment couple on the truck bolster relative to the side frames when the truck bolster is deflected from square relative to the side frames.
- 14. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein:
at least one of the trucks has a pair of first and second spaced apart side frames, and a transversely oriented truck bolster resiliently mounted to said side frames; said truck bolster has a first end resiliently connected to said first side frame and a second end resiliently connected to said second side frame; at least one of the trucks has a first biasing member and a second biasing member, said first biasing member being mounted in a laterally inboard position relative to said second biasing member; said first and second biasing members being oriented to provide a squaring restorative moment couple to the bolster relative to the first side frame when said bolster is deflected about a vertical axis relative to said first side frame.
- 15. The autorack rail road car of claim 14 wherein said first and second biasing members are mounted to act to one longitudinal side of said bolster, and said truck has third and fourth biasing members oriented to act to the other longitudinal side of said bolster.
- 16. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of said trucks is a three piece truck having a pair of side frame and a truck bolster extending therebetween, said three piece truck having dampers mounted in a four-cornered arrangement between said truck bolster and each of said sideframes.
- 17. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the rail car trucks has a wheel base exceeding 73 inches in length
- 18. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the rail road car trucks has a wheelbase that exceeds 1.3 times the gauge width of the rails.
- 19. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the rail road car trucks has a wheelbase between 73 and 88 inches in length.
- 20. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein at least one of the rail road car trucks has wheelbase in the range of 1.3 to 1.6 times the track gauge width.
- 21. The autorack rail road car of claim 1 wherein said rail road car is a three pack articulated rail road car.
- 22. An autorack railroad car having at least one rail car body unit, wherein said body unit is ballasted.
- 23. The autorack rail road car of claim 6 wherein at least one of said trucks is a three piece truck having a pair of side frame and a truck bolster extending therebetween, said three piece truck having dampers mounted in a four-cornered arrangement between said truck bolster and each of said sideframes.
