- 2. The article of claim 1, wherein the first raised structure has a first and second side wall which meet the structured surface along lower edges of the two grooves from one of the three sets of intersecting grooves, and wherein the second raised structure has a third and fourth side wall which meet the structured surface along lower edges of the two grooves from the another of the three sets of intersecting grooves.
- 3. The article of claim 2, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth side walls are disposed at an angle of about 5 to 10 degrees from a line normal to the base surface.
- 4. The article of claim 2, wherein at least the first and second side walls intersect the respective lower edges via an elongated curved surface.
- 5. The article of claim 4, wherein the elongated curved surface has a radius of at least about 0.254 millimeters.
- 6. The article of claim 1, further comprising:
- stress dissipating means disposed adjacent the first raised structure.
- 7. The article of claim 1, wherein the structured surface has a tallest cube corner element extending to a height D" above a reference plane, wherein the first and second raised structures extend to a height D' above the reference plane, and wherein the ratio of D' to D" is between 1.1:1 and 2.0:1.
- 8. The article of claim 1, wherein the article comprises retroreflective sheeting and the substrate comprises transparent material.
- 9. The article of claim 1, further including a sealing medium disposed adjacent the first and second raised structures.
- 10. The article of claim 1, wherein the first and second raised structures include flat top portions.
- 11. The article of claim 10, wherein the first and second raised structures each include a concentrator structure projecting from the respective flat top portion.
- 12. The article of claim 10, further including a backing layer selectively attached to the substrate at the flat top portions.
- 13. The article of claim 1, wherein the substrate includes a land having a substantially uniform thickness of at least 0.0254 millimeters.
- 14. The article of claim 1, wherein the first array of cube corner elements has the same orientation as the second array of cube corner elements.
- 15. A cube corner article comprising a substrate having a base surface and a structured surface opposite the base surface, the structured surface comprising:
- a plurality of raised structures; and
- a plurality of cube corner elements, including a first group of cube corner elements that border at least one of the raised structures and a second group of cube corner elements that do not border any of the raised structures;
- wherein each cube corner element in the first group is substantially identical to at least one cube corner element in the second group.
- 16. The article of claim 15, wherein the plurality of raised structures have substantially the same height above the base surface, the article further including a backing layer selectively attached to the substrate at the raised structures.
- 17. The article of claim 15, further including an elongated curved surface disposed between each raised structure and the first group of cube corner elements.
- 18. The article of claim 15, wherein cube corner elements on opposed sides of each raised structure have corresponding orientations.
- 19. The article of claim 15, wherein the substrate comprises transparent material.
- 20. The article of claim 15, wherein the article comprises retroreflective sheeting.
- 21. The article of claim 15, wherein the structured surface includes at least two sets of intersecting grooves which define the plurality of cube corner elements.
- 22. The article of claim 21, wherein the structured surface includes three sets of intersecting grooves which define the plurality of cube corner elements.
- 23. The article of claim 15, wherein:
- the plurality of cube corner elements includes a first and second array of cube corner elements formed by three sets of intersecting grooves in the substrate:
- the plurality of raised structures includes a first raised structure extending between the first and second arrays; and
- the plurality of raised structures includes a second raised structure which intersects the first raised structure;
- and further wherein the first raised structure extends parallel to and between two grooves from one of the three sets of intersecting grooves, and the second raised structure extends parallel to and between two grooves from another of the three sets of intersecting grooves.
