Claims
- 1. A ram and tool block structure for a vertical lathe or the like, which comprises
- (a) a ram housing supported for guided horizontal movement,
- (b) a ram quill supported for guided vertical movement in said housing,
- (c) a clamp housing carried by the lower end of said ram quill,
- (d) said clamp housing being of greater lateral width than a tool block and having separate tool block clamping means at each lateral side for clamping a tool block alternatively at either side of the ram.
- 2. The ram and tool block structure of claim 1, further characterized by
- (a) said clamp housing having laterally extending guide rib means along its underside,
- (b) a tool block adapted for engagement by said ram and having a guide recess in its upper surface for cooperation with said guide rib means, and
- (c) clamping means in said clamp housing adapted for lateral slidable reception in said guide recess and adapted to be drawn upwardly to secure a tool block to said clamp housing.
- 3. The ram and tool block structure according to claim 2, further characterized by
- (a) said clamp housing having spaced, downwardly projecting clamping means, one for each side of the clamp housing,
- (b) a clamp actuating rod extending longitudinally through the ram quill and having operating engagement with both of said clamping means and
- (c) clamp motor means at the upper end of the ram quill for driving said actuator rod.
- 4. The ram and tool block structure according to claim 3, further characterized by
- (a) said clamping means comprising threaded elements,
- (b) threaded collar means being provided in said clamp housing and engaging said threaded clamping elements,
- (c) said actuating rod being rotatably supported in said ram quill and connected to said threaded collar means for effecting controlled rotation thereof, and
- (d) said clamp motor means being operative to rotate said actuator rod.
- 5. The ram and tool block structure according to claim 4, further characterized by
- (a) said clamp motor means comprising separate first and second drive motors for rotating said actuating rod in clamping and unclamping directions,
- (b) said first motor having a relatively higher speed, lower torque driving relation to said actuating rod than said second motor.
