- 8. The ram-type blowout preventer of claim 7 wherein said member is reversely disposed on said piston with said second annular flange engaging said piston in said first position to increase said pressure area and allow said piston to engage each of the ends of said cylinder and said first annular flange engaging said piston in said second position to limit the movement of said piston within said cylinder.
- 9. A ram-type blowout preventer comprising:
- a housing having a central bore therethrough and a ram guideway transversely to said bore;
- a ram slidably movable along said guideway;
- an actuator including:
- a pressure-responsive cylinder adapted for connection to the housing;
- a piston having a pressure area responsive to fluid pressure and movably disposed within said cylinder;
- a stem associated with said piston for transmitting relative motion in response to pressure;
- a member removably mounted on said piston for movement with said piston and disposed within said cylinder for increasing said pressure area of said piston and for limiting the movement of said piston within said cylinder;
- said member including first and second annular flanges extending radially inward to form an annular space therebetween, said annular space receiving said piston and allowing said piston to move between said annular flanges, said first annular flange engaging said piston in a first position to increase said pressure area and said second annular flange engaging said piston in a second position to limit the movement of said piston within said cylinder;
- said member being reversely disposed on said piston with said second annular flange engaging said piston in said first position to increase said pressure area and said first annular flange allowing said piston to engage an end of said cylinder;
- said member including a first ring having interlocking engagement with a second ring;
- said first ring being split to allow for said interlocking engagement with said second ring.
- 10. A ram-type blowout preventer for shearing a pipe and for sealing the bore of the blowout preventer, comprising:
- a housing with a bore and a ram slidably movable transversely to said bore;
- a cylinder mounted on said housing and having first and second ends;
- fluid apertures associated with said first and second ends for the application of fluid pressure;
- a piston having a pressure area responsive to fluid pressure causing said piston to stroke within said cylinder between said ends;
