Claims
- 1. A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus comprising:
a nozzle having a sidewall at least partially defining an interior space, the nozzle having a fluid inlet through which fluid is received within the interior space and a fluid outlet through which fluid exits the interior space; a valve in the interior space and movable along an imaginary axis extending through the interior space and the outlet; a first cross section passing through the nozzle and the valve at an angle with respect to the axis, the first cross section defining a first cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve; and a second cross section passing through portions of the nozzle and the valve downstream of the first cross section and at the angle with respect to the axis, the second cross section defining a second cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve greater than the first cross sectional area, the second cross-sectional area providing increased space through which fluid flows between the valve and the sidewall compared to the first cross-sectional area.
- 2. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sidewall at least partially defines a diffuser within the nozzle and in which the valve is at least partially located.
- 3. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 2, wherein the valve includes an outer wall and wherein the sidewall of the nozzle at least partially defining the diffuser and the outer wall of the valve are correspondingly shaped.
- 4. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 2, wherein the sidewall of the nozzle at least partially defining the diffuser defines an angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the axis.
- 5. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve has an outer wall, the valve being movable relative to the nozzle toward an opened position in which the outer wall of valve is spaced a distance from the sidewall of the nozzle.
- 6. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve is a first valve, the comestible fluid dispensing apparatus further comprising a second valve in the nozzle downstream of the first valve and movable relative to the nozzle toward an opened position in which the second valve is spaced a distance from the sidewall.
- 7. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 6, further comprising:
a length between the first and second valves; and a third cross section passing through the nozzle between the first and second valves and at the angle with respect to the axis, the third cross section defining a third cross sectional area through which fluid flows to the second valve, the third cross sectional area greater than the first and second cross sectional areas.
- 8. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 6, wherein the sidewall at least partially defines a diffuser within the nozzle and in which the first valve is at least partially located.
- 9. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve has a range of positions, all of which provide fluid communication between upstream and downstream locations of the valve.
- 10. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve has at least one closed position in which fluid is blocked from passing the valve.
- 11. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve comprises an upstream end and a downstream end having a width between opposing sides of the valve, the first and second ends defining a length therebetween, the length being greater than the half the width.
- 12. A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus comprising:
a nozzle defining an interior space and having a fluid inlet through which fluid is received within the interior space and a fluid outlet through which fluid exits the interior space; and a diffuser at least partially defined by internal surfaces of the nozzle, the diffuser having an increasing cross-sectional area with increasing proximity to the fluid outlet; a substantially conical valve at least partially located within the diffuser and movable to different positions with respect to the nozzle, the valve comprising:
an annular body defined about an imaginary axis passing through the valve; a radius of the valve defined by a portion of the valve at a maximum distance from the imaginary axis; a first end; and a second end having an outer circumference larger than the first end; and
- 13. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the valve is elongated along the imaginary axis.
- 14. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the nozzle has a sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, and wherein the valve is movable between a closed position in which at least a portion of the valve contacts the sidewall of the nozzle to prevent fluid flow through the fluid outlet, and an opened position in which the valve is spaced a distance from the sidewall of the nozzle.
- 15. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the valve has a range of positions, all of which provide fluid communication between upstream and downstream locations of the valve.
- 16. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first end of the valve has a rounded tip.
- 17. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the valve has an outer surface, and wherein a plurality of ribs extend along the outer surface of the valve between the first and second ends.
- 18. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the nozzle has a sidewall, the sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, and wherein a plurality of ribs extend along the sidewall between the inlet and outlet.
- 19. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the valve is a first valve, the comestible fluid dispensing apparatus further comprising a second valve located in the nozzle downstream of the first valve, the second valve having at least one open position in which fluid can pass the second valve and at least one closed position in which at least a portion of the second valve contacts an internal surface of the nozzle to prevent fluid flow past the second valve.
- 20. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 19, wherein:
the first valve defines a first flow restriction; the second valve defines a second flow restriction; and a cross-sectional area of fluid flow taken substantially perpendicular to the imaginary axis between the first and second valves is larger than cross-sectional areas of fluid flow at the flow restrictions.
- 21. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the valve further comprises an annular exterior surface between the first and second ends and in contact with fluid in the nozzle, the annular exterior surface extending between about 0.2 times the radius of the valve and about 0.8 times the radius of the valve, wherein an imaginary radial line extending from a point on the annular exterior surface of the valve at 0.2 times the radius of the valve and a point on the annular exterior surface of the valve at 0.8 times the radius of the valve is at a first angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the imaginary axis measured in a downstream direction along the imaginary axis.
- 22. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the internal surfaces at least partially defining the diffuser define an angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the imaginary axis.
- 23. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 21, wherein the internal surfaces at least partially defining the diffuser define a second angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the imaginary axis.
- 24. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 23, wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.
- 25. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 23, wherein the first angle is less than the second angle.
- 26. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 23, wherein the first and second angles are substantially the same.
- 27. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the interior space has a length defined along a flow path of fluid through the nozzle, and wherein the valve has a length occupying at least half the length of the interior space.
- 28. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 12, wherein the nozzle has a sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, the comestible fluid dispensing apparatus further comprising:
a first cross section passing through the nozzle and the valve at an angle with respect to the imaginary axis, the first cross section defining a first cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve; and a second cross section passing through portions of the nozzle and the valve downstream of the first cross section and at the angle with respect to the imaginary axis, the second cross section defining a second cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle greater than the first cross sectional area.
- 29. A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus comprising:
a nozzle defining an interior space and having an inlet and an outlet; a diffuser defined by internal surfaces of the nozzle, the diffuser having an increasing cross-sectional area with increasing proximity to the outlet of the nozzle; and a valve in the interior space and movable along an imaginary axis extending through the interior space and the outlet, the valve comprising:
an upstream end; and a downstream end having a width between opposing sides of the valve, the first and second ends defining a length therebetween, the length being longer than the width to define an elongated valve shape along the imaginary axis.
- 30. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the valve has an open position and no closed position.
- 31. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the nozzle has a sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, and wherein the valve has an outer surface, at least one of the sidewall of the nozzle and the outer surface of the valve having a plurality of ribs extending into the interior space.
- 32. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the valve is a first valve, and wherein the nozzle has a sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, the comestible fluid dispensing apparatus further comprising a second valve in the nozzle downstream of the first valve and coupled to the first valve for movement with the first valve, the second valve movable relative to the nozzle toward an opened position in which the second valve is spaced a distance from the sidewall.
- 33. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 32, further comprising an actuator coupled to the first and second valves and operable to move the first and second valves with respect to the nozzle along the axis.
- 34. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the interior space has an elongated length, and wherein the valve occupies at least half the length of the interior space.
- 35. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein internal surfaces of the nozzle at least partially defining the diffuser define an angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the imaginary axis measured in a downstream direction along the imaginary axis.
- 36. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 35, wherein the valve has substantially straight exterior walls oriented at an angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the imaginary axis measured in a downstream direction along the imaginary axis.
- 37. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the valve has substantially straight exterior walls oriented at an angle of no greater than about 15 degrees with respect to the imaginary axis measured in a downstream direction along the imaginary axis.
- 38. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the nozzle has a sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, the comestible fluid dispensing apparatus further comprising:
a first cross section passing through the nozzle and the valve at an angle with respect to the imaginary axis, the first cross section defining a first cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve; and a second cross section passing through portions of the nozzle and the valve downstream of the first cross section and at the angle with respect to the imaginary axis, the second cross section defining a second cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve greater than the first cross sectional area.
- 39. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the diffuser has an elongated length along the imaginary axis, and wherein the valve occupies at least half of the elongated length of the diffuser.
- 40. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 29, wherein the valve extends along substantially all of the length of the diffuser.
- 41. A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus comprising:
a nozzle defining an interior space, the nozzle having a fluid inlet through which fluid is received within the interior space and a fluid outlet through which fluid exits the interior space; a first valve in the interior space of the nozzle and movable along an imaginary axis extending through at least part of the interior space; and a second valve in the interior space of the nozzle and located downstream of the first valve, the second valve movable from an opened position in which comestible fluid can pass the second valve and through the fluid outlet and a closed position in which comestible fluid is blocked from passing the second valve.
- 42. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus as claimed in claim 41, wherein the imaginary axis extends through the outlet of the nozzle.
- 43. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus as claimed in claim 41, wherein the first and second valves are both movable long the imaginary axis.
- 44. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus as claimed in claim 41, wherein the first and second valves are coupled for movement together within the nozzle.
- 45. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus as claimed in claim 44, wherein:
the first and second valves are separated a distance from one another in the nozzle; and the distance is adjustable.
- 46. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus as claimed in claim 41, wherein:
the first valve has a range of opened positions but no closed position; the first valve defines an adjustable flow restriction in the nozzle; and adjustability of the flow restriction is defined by at least part of the range of opened positions of the first valve.
- 47. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus as claimed in claim 41, further comprising a diffuser defined by internal surfaces of the nozzle, wherein the first valve is located and movable within the diffuser.
- 48. The comestible fluid dispensing apparatus of claim 41, wherein the nozzle has a sidewall at least partially defining the interior space, the comestible fluid dispensing apparatus further comprising:
a first cross section passing through the nozzle and the valve at an angle with respect to the imaginary axis, the first cross section defining a first cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve; and a second cross section passing through portions of the nozzle and the valve downstream of the first cross section and at the angle with respect to the imaginary axis, the second cross section defining a second cross sectional area between the sidewall of the nozzle and the valve greater than the first cross sectional area.
