Claims
- 1. In a railway viaduct system having a central load bearing body, a plurality of upright piers disposed below and supporting said central body, a pair of lateral vehicle support structures mounted to opposite side portions of said central body, a least one pair of vehicle support rails disposed on each of said vehicle support structures, and said central body extending upwardly from said lateral vehicle support structures to provide a barrier between said pairs of vehicle support rails disposed on each of said vehicle support structures, a method for constructing a central station platform structure comprising the steps of:
- vertically dividing said central load bearing body into first and second symmetrical body halves;
- spacing said first and second body halves apart a selected distance to provide sufficient spacing for a central station platform;
- securing between said spaced apart body halves a plurality of spacer blocks; and
- securing between said spaced apart body halves, above said spacer blocks, a plurality of platform slabs forming said central station platform.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said central load bearing body is formed as a sequence of precast concrete segments, and wherein said step of vertically dividing said central load bearing body includes casting some of said precast concrete segments into two vertically divided segment pairs.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of securing said spacer blocks includes placing a plurality of precast spacer blocks between said first and second body halves and casting one or more slab joints above and/or below said spacer blocks.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said step of securing said spacer blocks further includes securing said precast spacer blocks between said first and second body halves using appropriate post-tensioning members, and thereafter removing said post-tensioning members following the casting of said slab joints.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of securing said platform slabs includes placing a plurality of precast concrete platform slabs between said first and second body halves.
- 6. A rapid transit viaduct system with central station platform comprising:
- a plurality of precast concrete viaduct segments, each segment including;
- a central load bearing body;
- a pair of lateral vehicle support structures mounted to opposite side portions of said central body, said vehicle support structures being configured to support a least one pair of vehicle support rails; and
- said central body extending upwardly from said lateral vehicle support structures to provide a barrier between said pairs of vehicle support rails disposed on each of said vehicle support structures;
- a plurality of upright piers disposed below and supporting said viaduct segments;
- said central station platform including:
- some of said precast concrete viaduct segments being vertically divided and spaced apart a selected distance;
- a plurality of spacer blocks disposed between said spaced apart viaduct segments; and
- a plurality of platform slabs disposed between said spaced apart viaduct segments, above said spacer blocks.
- 7. The viaduct system of claim 6 wherein said spacer blocks are precast and wherein said central station platform further includes one or more spacer slabs cast above and/or below said spacer blocks.
- 8. The viaduct system of claim 7 wherein there are two spacer slabs, one above and the other below said spacer blocks.
- 9. The viaduct system of claim 6 wherein said platform slabs are precast.
- 10. A method for fabricating a rapid transit viaduct system, comprising the steps of:
- fabricating a plurality of precast viaduct segments, said viaduct segments being configured to be arranged end-to-end and tied together to form a viaduct span for supporting one or more rapid transit vehicles;
- fabricating some of said precast viaduct segments as a pair of vertically symmetrical segment halves;
- forming a viaduct span by arranging a plurality of said precast viaduct segments end-to-end and tying said viaduct segments together;
- forming a central station platform in said viaduct span by arranging a plurality of said precast viaduct segment halves end-to-end at selected distances apart;
- securing between said precast viaduct segment halves a plurality of precast spacer blocks;
- casting between said precast viaduct segment halves above and below said spacer blocks a pair of spacer slabs; and
- securing between said precast viaduct segment halves a plurality of platform slabs; and
- tying together said precast viaduct segment halves and to said tied together precast viaduct segments.
