Claims
- 1. A pigment comprising rare earth-transition metal oxide of the formula (RexTm)Oy, where Re is at least one rare earth element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, Tm is at least one transition metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, x ranges from 0.08 to 12, and y ranges from x+1 to 2x+2.
- 2. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re is Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm or a combination thereof.
- 3. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re is Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm or a combination thereof.
- 4. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Tm is V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu or a combination thereof.
- 5. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Tm is V, Mn, Co, Cu or a combination thereof.
- 6. The pigment of claim 1, wherein x is from about 0.25 to about 4.
- 7. The pigment of claim 1, wherein x is from about 0.5 to about 2.
- 8. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Y and Tm comprises Mn.
- 9. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Y and Tm comprises Co.
- 10. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Y and Tm comprises Cu.
- 11. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Y and Tm comprises Cr.
- 12. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises La and Tm comprises Mn.
- 13. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises La and Tm comprises Co.
- 14. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises La and Tm comprises Cu.
- 15. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises La and Tm comprises Cr.
- 16. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises La and Tm comprises Ni.
- 17. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Ce and Tm comprises V.
- 18. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Pr and Tm comprises Mn.
- 19. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Pr and Tm comprises Co.
- 20. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Pr and Tm comprises Cu.
- 21. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Pr and Tm comprises Cr.
- 22. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Nd and Tm comprises V.
- 23. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Nd and Tm comprises Mn.
- 24. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Nd and Tm comprises Co.
- 25. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Nd and Tm comprises Cu.
- 26. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Nd and Tm comprises Cr.
- 27. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Nd and Tm comprises Ni.
- 28. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Sm and Tm comprises V.
- 29. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Sm and Tm comprises Mn.
- 30. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Sm and Tm comprises Co.
- 31. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Sm and Tm comprises Cu.
- 32. The pigment of claim 1, wherein Re comprises Sm and Tm comprises Cr.
- 33. The pigment of claim 1, further comprising up to 50 mol percent of at least one dopant.
- 34. A coating composition comprising:
a liquid carrier; and a pigment comprising rare earth-transition metal oxide dispersed in the carrier, wherein the rare earth-transition metal oxide is of the formula (RexTm)Oy, where Re is at least one rare earth element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, Tm is at least one transition metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, x ranges from 0.08 to 12, and y ranges from x+1 to 2x+2.
- 35. The coating composition of claim 34, wherein the pigment comprises from about 0.1 to about 50 weight percent of the coating composition.
- 36. An enamel composition comprising:
at least one glass frit; and a pigment comprising rare earth-transition metal oxide, wherein the rare earth-transition metal oxide is of the formula (RexTm)Oy, where Re is at least one rare earth element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, Tm is at least one transition metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, x ranges from 0.08 to 12, and y ranges from x+1 to 2x+2.
- 37. The enamel composition of claim 36, wherein the pigment comprises from about 0.1 to about 70 weight percent and the at least one glass frit comprises from about 30 to about 99.9 weight percent of the enamel composition.
- 38. An article comprising:
a substrate matrix; and a pigment comprising rare earth-transition metal oxide dispersed in the substrate matrix, wherein the rare earth-transition metal oxide is of the formula (RexTm)Oy, where Re is at least one rare earth element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, Tm is at least one transition metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, x ranges from 0.08 to 12, and y ranges from x+1 to 2x+2.
- 39. An article comprising:
a substrate; and a coating including a pigment comprising rare earth-transition metal oxide covering at least a portion of the substrate, wherein the rare earth-transition metal oxide is of the formula (RexTm)Oy, where Re is at least one rare earth element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, Tm is at least one transition metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, x ranges from 0.08 to 12, and y ranges from x+1 to 2x+2.
- 40. The article of claim 39, wherein the substrate comprises glass, ceramic, metal, plastic, carbon or composite.
- 41. A method of making a rare earth-transition metal oxide pigment comprising:
mixing powders of rare earth oxide or precursors capable of forming a rare earth oxide with a transition metal oxide or precursors capable of forming a transition metal oxide; and calcining the mixture to form a pigment of the formula (RexTm)Oy, where Re is at least one rare earth element selected from Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, Tm is at least one transition metal selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, x ranges from 0.08 to 12, and y ranges from x+1 to 2x+2.
- 42. The method of claim 41, further comprising calcining the mixture at a temperature of from about 700 to about 1,400 degrees C.
- 43. The method of claim 41, further comprising comminuting the calcined mixture to an average particle size of from about 0.1 to about 10 microns.
