Claims
- 1. A clamp for securing a reactor lid to a reactor vessel, the reactor lid and reactor vessel forming a reactor junction, the clamp comprising:
a. a first clamp member having a first surface engaging the reactor junction; b. a second clamp member having a second surface engaging the reactor junction, the second clamp member fixed in relation to the first clamp member when the pressure in the reactor vessel is below a threshold pressure and the second clamp member moveable in relation to the first clamp member when the pressure in the reactor vessel is above a threshold pressure.
- 2. The clamp of claim 1 wherein the first clamp member abuts against the second clamp member when the pressure in the reactor vessel is below the threshold pressure.
- 3. The clamp of claim 1 further comprising a spring for biasing the first clamp member toward the second clamp member.
- 4. The clamp of claim 3 wherein the spring is compressed to bias the first clamp member toward the second clamp member.
- 5. The clamp of claim 1 further comprising a bolt extending between the first clamp member and the second clamp member.
- 6. The clamp of claim 5 further comprising a spring retained upon the post, the spring for biasing the first clamp member toward the second clamp member.
- 7. A method for securing a reactor lid to a reactor vessel, the reactor lid and reactor vessel forming a reactor junction, the method comprising the steps of:
a. providing a first clamp member having a first surface engaging the reactor junction; b. providing a second clamp member having a second surface engaging the reactor junction; c. biasing the first clamp member toward the second clamp member to secure the reactor lid to the reactor vessel when the pressure in the reactor vessel is below a threshold pressure; d. moving the first clamp member away from the second clamp member when the pressure in the reactor vessel is above a threshold pressure.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of providing a bolt that extends between the first clamp member and the second clamp member, the bolt having a nut positioned thereon such that movement of the nut biases the first clamp member toward the second clamp member.
- 9. A clamp for securing a reactor lid to a reactor vessel, the clamp comprising:
a. a first clamp member having a first surface contacting the reactor lid; b. means for biasing the first clamp member against the reactor lid such that the reactor lid (i) sealably engages the reactor vessel when the pressure in the reactor vessel is below a threshold pressure and (ii) disengages the reactor vessel when the pressure in the reactor vessel is above a threshold pressure.
- 10. The clamp of claim 9 further comprising a second clamp member having a second surface contacting the reactor vessel.
- 11. The clamp of claim 10 further comprising a connecting means between the first clamp member and the second clamp member such that manipulation of the connecting means activates the means for biasing.
- 12. A clamp for securing a reactor lid to a reactor vessel, the clamp comprising:
a. a first clamp member; b. a second clamp member releasably joined to the first clamp member; c. a bolt extending between the first clamp member and the second clamp member; d. a spring retained upon the bolt such that compression of the spring biases the first clamp member toward the second clamp member, wherein movement of the first clamp member away from the second clamp member further compresses the spring.
- 13. The clamp of claim 12 wherein the first clamp member includes a first surface contacting the reactor vessel.
- 14. The clamp of claim 12 wherein the second clamp member includes a second surface contacting the reactor lid.
- 15. The clamp of claim 12 wherein the second clamp member includes a channel for receiving the bolt.
- 16. The clamp of claim 15 wherein a nut engages the bolt and is retained within the channel, the nut contacting one end of the spring and compressing the spring when the nut is moved in the channel.
- 17. A device for securing a reactor lid to a reactor vessel comprising:
a. a first clamp member abutting a second clamp member; b. at least one spring retained in the second clamp member, wherein the at least one spring is compressed to hold the first clamp member to the second clamp member, the at least one spring being further compressed to allow the first clamp member to separate from the second clamp member when the pressure within the reactor vessel reaches a threshold pressure.
- 18. A device as in claim 17 where the threshold pressure is adjustable using an adjusting means.
- 19. A device as in claim 18 where the adjusting means comprise one or more threaded bolts which extend through the first clamp member and engage the at least one spring retained in the second clamp member to compress or relax the at least one spring.
- 20. A device as in claim 17 where the device is releasably mounted to a module shell for retaining the reactor vessel.
