Claims
- 1. A rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle adapted to accommodate a driver and a passenger in a seating area adjacent to the location of said mirror assembly, said assembly comprising:
- a prismatic mirror element having a front surface, a rear surface, and a reflective layer on said rear surface;
- a day/night actuator for moving said prismatic mirror element between a high reflectivity day position and a reduced reflectivity night position;
- said assembly having a top surface, a bottom surface, a back surface and a front from which said mirror element is viewed;
- a first driver lamp and a first light opening in said bottom surface passing light from said first lamp out of said assembly, and a second passenger lamp and a second light opening in said bottom surface passing light from said second lamp out of said assembly;
- said assembly including first and second electrical switches, said first switch being electrically connected to said first lamp, said second switch being electrically connected to said second lamp, said switches being located in said front and accessible to the driver and passenger of the vehicle visibly and physically from said front of said assembly;
- said second lamp being mounted at an angle to said first lamp such that said first lamp directs light downwardly and out of said assembly while said second lamp directs light generally downwardly and away from the light from said first lamp and out of said assembly;
- each of said first and second light openings including a lens.
- 2. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein said assembly includes a bezel at said front of said assembly, said switches being accessible through apertures in said bezel.
- 3. The mirror assembly of claim 2 wherein said switches are located centrally and below said mirror element.
- 4. The mirror assembly of claim 2 wherein at least one of said lamps is connected to an electrical circuit enabling said one lamp to be illuminated when a vehicle door is opened.
- 5. The mirror assembly of claim 4 wherein both of said lamps are connected to an electrical circuit enabling both of said lamps to be illuminated when a vehicle door is opened.
- 6. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein the passenger seated in the seating area of the vehicle has a lap area; said second lamp directing light generally to the lap area of the passenger of the vehicle.
- 7. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein said first lamp directs light generally directly downwardly.
- 8. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of said lenses is recessed into said bottom surface of said assembly.
- 9. The mirror assembly of claim 8 wherein each of said lenses is recessed into said bottom surface of said assembly.
- 10. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein each of said lenses is one of a transparent glass element and a transparent plastic element.
- 11. The mirror assembly of claim 10 wherein each of said lenses is a transparent plastic element.
- 12. The mirror assembly of claim 11 wherein each of said lenses is formed from molded plastic.
- 13. The mirror assembly of claim 12 wherein each of said lenses is formed from polycarbonate.
- 14. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of said lenses is a Fresnel lens.
- 15. The mirror assembly of claim 14 wherein each of said lenses is a Fresnel lens.
- 16. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of said first lamp and said second lamp comprises a cartridge style bulb having a metallic connector at each end.
- 17. The mirror assembly of claim 1 wherein each of said first lamp and said second lamp comprises a cartridge style bulb having a metallic connector at each end.
- 18. A rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle adapted to accommodate a driver and a passenger in a seating area adjacent to the location of said mirror assembly, said assembly comprising:
- a mirror element
- said assembly having a top surface, a bottom surface, a back surface and a front from which said mirror element is viewed:
- a first driver lamp and a first light opening in said bottom surface passing light from said first lamp out of said assembly, and a second passenger lamp and a second light opening in said bottom surface passing light from said second lamp out of said assembly;
- said assembly including first and second electrical switches, said first switch being electrically connected to said first lamp, said second switch being electrically connected to said second lamp, said switches being accessible to the driver and passenger of the vehicle visibly and physically from said front of said assembly; and
- a bezel at said front of said assembly, said switches being accessible through apertures in said bezel;
- said second lamp mounted at an angle to said first lamp such that said first lamp directs light downwardly and out of said assembly while said second lamp directs light generally downwardly and away from the light from said first lamp and out of said assembly
- each of said first and second light openings including a lens.
- 19. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein said switches are located centrally and below said mirror element.
- 20. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein at least one of said lamps is connected to an electrical circuit enabling said one lamp to be illuminated when a vehicle door is opened.
- 21. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein both of said lamps are connected to an electrical circuit enabling both of said lamps to be illuminated when a vehicle door is opened.
- 22. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein the passenger seated in the seating area of the vehicle has a lap area;
- said second lamp directing light generally to the lap area of the passenger of the vehicle.
- 23. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein said first lamp directs light generally directly downwardly.
- 24. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein at least one of said lenses is recessed into said bottom surface of said assembly.
- 25. The mirror assembly of claim 24 wherein each of said lenses is recessed into said bottom surface of said assembly.
- 26. The mirror assembly of claim 25 wherein each of said lenses is formed from polycarbonate.
- 27. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein each of said lenses is one of a transparent glass element and a transparent plastic element.
- 28. The mirror assembly of claim 27 wherein each of said lenses is a transparent plastic element.
- 29. The mirror assembly of claim 28 wherein each of said lenses is formed from molded plastic.
- 30. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein at least one of said lenses is a Fresnel lens.
- 31. The mirror assembly of claim 30 wherein each of said lenses is a Fresnel lens.
- 32. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein at least one of said first lamp and said second lamp comprises a cartridge style bulb having a metallic connector at each end.
- 33. The mirror assembly of claim 18 wherein each of said first lamp and said second lamp comprises a cartridge style bulb having a metallic connector at each end.
