Claims
- 1. Apparatus for removing rod-like articles from a container, comprising means for moving a succession of containers through an unloading station, each container carrying at least one batch comprising a stack of said articles; means for successively removing batches from said containers at said unloading station; conveyor means for successively receiving batches removed from said containers; retaining means for confining said batches on said conveyor means and for separating the successive batches which are disposed therebetween; and means for withdrawing said retaining means so that successive batches received on said conveyor means become combined and may be moved away from said unloading station as a continuous stream of articles on said conveyor means.
- 2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, including means for intermittently driving said conveyor means and means for intermittently driving said moving means for moving a container through said unloading station in synchronism with said conveyor means, said removing means being arranged to remove articles from said container when said conveyor means and said container moving means are stationary.
- 3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein the conveyor means comprises an endless conveyor.
- 4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 3, wherein the retaining means includes upstanding end plates carried by said conveyor, the spacing between adjacent end plates matching one dimension of a container.
- 5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein said end plates are arranged to be retracted below said conveyor.
- 6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said removing means comprises an unloading pusher movable through a container towards said retaining means.
- 7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said removing means comprises a scoop movable into and out of a container to remove articles therefrom and a stripper member arranged to coact with said scoop to discharge articles from the latter.
- 8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said removing means is arranged to operate in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said conveyor means.
- 9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, wherein the container moving means is arranged to move a container intermittently through the unloading station in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said conveyor means.
- 10. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said retaining means is carried by said conveyor means.
- 11. Apparatus as claimed in claim 10, wherein said retaining means comprises spaced means on said conveyor means between which batches are received on the conveyor means.
- 12. Apparatus as claimed in claim 11, in which said conveyor means has a conveyor surface for supporting said articles, wherein said withdrawing means is operable to successively retract said spaced means beneath said conveyor surface.
- 13. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the container moving means includes means for withdrawing a container from a supply and means for returning the container to the supply after moving it through said unloading station.
- 14. Apparatus as claimed in claim 13, in which said supply comprises a movable trolley, wherein the container moving means includes means for moving said trolley so that a succession of containers carried by said trolley may be moved through said unloading station.
- 15. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the retaining means comprises spaced members for confining the ends of a batch on the conveyor means, including means for withdrawing one of said members while leaving the other member in place.
- 16. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the retaining means is movable with said conveyor means, including means for progressively withdrawing said retaining means as said conveyor means is moved.
- 17. Apparatus as claimed in claim 16, wherein the retaining means comprises spaced members carried by said conveyor means, including means for intermittently moving said conveyor means so that a batch is received on said conveyor means in a position immediately upstream from the preceding batch and separated from said preceding batch by part of said retaining means.
- 18. Apparatus for removing rod-like articles from a container, comprising means for intermittently conveying through an unloading station a succession of containers, each container carrying at least one batch comprising a substantially rectangular stack of said articles; means for successively removing batches from said containers at said unloading station; endless conveyor means for receiving batches removed from said containers; a plurality of spaced retaining members carried by said conveyor means and defining contiguous regions on said conveyor means, each region being dimensioned to receive a batch; means for intermittently moving said conveyor means so that adjacent regions are successively positioned at said unloading station to receive a batch, the ends of the batch received on said conveyor means being confined by said spaced retaining members; and means for sequentially and progressively withdrawing said retaining members from between successive batches, so that downstream of said unloading station said batches become combined into a continuous stream of articles on said endless conveyor means.
- 19. Apparatus as claimed in claim 18, wherein said withdrawing means comprises means for retracting the retaining members below the surface of said conveyor means.
