Claims
- 1. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a body, a plug interface for receiving a plug projecting from said body, and a member projecting from said body and separated from said plug by said body, said member having at least a first pivot area and a second pivot area formed thereon; and at least a first signal contact and a second signal contact, wherein a first portion of each of said first and second signal contacts extend through said housing body and is exposed in said plug interface, and a second portion of said first and second signal contacts abut said first and second pivot areas respectively causing a third portion of said first and second signal contacts to be substantially aligned.
- 2. The receptacle of claim 1, wherein said member has a plurality of slots formed therein and said first pivot area and said second pivot area are each formed in one of said plurality of slots.
- 3. The receptacle of claim 1, wherein said pivot area forms an acute angle.
- 4. The receptacle of claim 1, wherein said portion of said first and second signal contacts are substantially aligned vertically and horizontally.
- 5. The receptacle of claim 1, wherein said first signal contact and said second signal contact each comprise a portion extending into said plug interface, a tail portion extending below said housing, and a member formed therebetween, said member contacting one of said pivot areas.
- 6. The receptacle of claim 5, wherein said tail portions of said first signal contact and said second signal contact are aligned.
- 7. The receptacle of claim 1, wherein said third portions of said signal contacts are horizontally and vertically aligned.
- 8. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a body and a plug interface for receiving a plug projecting from said body; and a shielding shell disposed on said plug interface for providing electrical continuity between said receptacle and a plug, said shielding shell formed of a metallic material and having formed therein a plurality of projections, wherein at least a portion of each of said plurality of projections increases in height across the length of the portion.
- 9. The receptacle of claim 8, wherein said projections have the shape of cantilevered beams.
- 10. The receptacle of claim 8, wherein said receptacle further comprises a second plurality of projections, each of said plurality of projections having a substantially constant height across the projection.
- 11. The receptacle of claim 10, wherein each of said second plurality of projections has the shape of a bump.
- 12. The receptacle of claim 8, further comprising at least one latch member extending from said housing, said shielding shell further comprising a projection extending therefrom and contacting said latch member.
- 13. The receptacle of claim 12, wherein said at least one latch member has attached thereto a projection for forming an electrical path to ground.
- 14. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a body and a plug interface for receiving a plug projecting from said body; at least one latch arm extending from said housing, said latch arm for mating with a corresponding member on a plug assembly; and a shielding shell disposed on said plug interface for providing electrical continuity between said receptacle and a plug assembly, said shielding shell formed of a metallic material and having a projection extending therefrom, said projection contacting said at least one latch arm so as to provide an electrical path between said shielding shell and said at least one latch arm.
- 15. The receptacle of claim 14, wherein said at least one latch member has attached thereto a projection for forming an electrical path to ground.
- 16. The receptacle of claim 14, wherein said shielding shell has formed therein a plurality of projections for interfacing with corresponding projections on a plug assembly, each of said plurality of projections having a portion increasing in height across a length of said portion.
- 17. The receptacle of claim 15, wherein said projections have the shape of cantilevered beams.
- 18. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a body and a plug interface for receiving a plug projecting from said body; and an electrical shielding gasket disposed on said housing and formed around said plug interface, said electrical shielding gasket comprising a metallic frame, a first plurality of metallic beams extending from said metallic frame and situated linearly along said metallic frame with portions of said frame formed therebetween, and a second plurality of metallic beams extending from said metallic frame and situated linearly along said metallic frame, said second plurality of metallic beams spanning said portions of said frame between said first plurality of beams and overlapping said first plurality of metallic beams.
- 19. The receptacle of claim 18, wherein said metallic beams are formed in an arced shape.
- 20. The receptacle of claim 18, further comprising at least one latch member extending from said housing and having a recess formed therein, said electrical shielding gasket further comprising a member extending from said gasket and residing in said recess so as to limit movement of said electrical shielding gasket.
- 21. The receptacle of claim 20, wherein said recess is a channel having a length and said gasket is free to move relative to said latch member along said length.
- 22. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a body and a plug interface for receiving a plug projecting from said housing; an electrical shielding gasket disposed on said housing and formed around said plug interface, said electrical shielding gasket comprising a metallic frame, at least a first metallic beam and a second metallic beam extending from said metallic frame and linearly arranged with a portion of said frame therebetween, and at least a third metallic beam extending from said metallic frame and offset relative to said first and second metallic beams, said third metallic beam overlapping said first and second metallic beams.
- 23. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing; at least one latch arm extending from said housing, said latch arm for mating with a corresponding member on a plug assembly, said at least one latch arm having a recess formed therein; an electrical shielding gasket disposed on said housing, said electrical shielding gasket comprising a member extending therefrom, wherein said member is situated in said recess and limits movement of said electrical shielding gasket.
- 24. The receptacle of claim 23, wherein said recess is a channel having a length and said member is free to move along the length of said channel.
- 25. The receptacle of claim 23, wherein said electrical shielding gasket further comprises a metallic frame, at least a first metallic beam and a second beam extending from said metallic frame and linearly arranged with a portion of said frame therebetween, and at least a third metallic beam extending from said metallic frame and offset relative to said first and second metallic beams, said third metallic beam overlapping said first and second metallic beams.
- 26. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing; and a latch plate comprising:
a latch bar extending along said housing; at least a first latch member and second latch member integrally formed with said latch bar and extending through said housing, said latch members for mating with a corresponding members on a plug; and at least one projection integrally formed with said latch plate for connecting said latch plate to a device.
- 27. The receptacle of claim 26, wherein said at least one projection is formed to connect to a ground source.
- 28. The receptacle of claim 26, further comprising an electrical shielding gasket having a member extending therefrom, wherein at least one of said first latch member and said second latch member has a recess formed therein for accepting said member.
- 29. The receptacle of claim 28, wherein said recess is a channel having a length and said member is free to move along the length of said channel.
- 30. A receptacle system, comprising:
a circuit board having at least one ground source;
a housing; and a latch plate comprising:
a latch bar extending along said housing; at least a first latch member and second latch member integrally formed with said latch bar and extending through said housing, said latch members for mating with a corresponding members on a plug; and at least a first projection and a second projection, said first and second projection integrally formed with said latch plate and for connecting to said at least one ground source.
- 31. The receptacle of claim 30, further comprising an electrical shielding gasket having a member extending therefrom, wherein at least one of said first latch member and said second latch member has a recess formed therein for accepting said member.
- 32. The receptacle of claim 31, wherein said recess is a channel having a length and said member is free to move along the length of said channel.
- 33. A system, comprising:
a plug having a conductive casing; a receptacle comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a body and a plug interface for receiving said plug projecting from said body; and an shielding shell disposed on said plug interface for providing electrical continuity between said receptacle and said plug, said shielding shell formed of a metallic material and having formed therein a plurality of projections, at least a portion of each of said plurality of projections increasing in height across the length of the portion and contacts said conductive casing, wherein a continuous electrical path is formed between said casing and said receptacle.
- 34. The system of claim 33, further comprising a circuit board having a ground source,
said receptacle further comprising a latch plate having at least one latch member extending through said housing, and at least one projection integrally formed with said latch member and contacting said ground source, wherein said shielding shell comprises a projection contacting said at least one latch member, thereby forming a continuous electrical path from said casing, through said shielding shell and latch member to said ground source.
- 35. The system of claim 34, wherein a single ground potential is maintained from said plug to said receptacle.
- 36. The system of claim 34, further comprising an electrical shielding gasket disposed on said housing and formed around said plug interface, said electrical shielding gasket comprising a metallic frame, a first plurality of metallic beams extending from said metallic frame and situated linearly along said metallic frame with portions of said frame formed therebetween, and a second plurality of metallic beams extending from said metallic frame and situated linearly along said metallic frame, said second plurality of metallic beams spanning said portions of said frame between said first plurality of beams and overlapping said first plurality of metallic beams,
wherein said shielding gasket overlaps a gap between said plug and said receptacle when said plug is attached to said receptacle.
- 37. The system of claim 36, wherein said gasket further comprises a projection extending into a recess formed in said at least one latch member.
- 38. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing comprising a front side and a rear side; and a ground plate comprising:
a ground bar extending along the rear side of said housing; and at least one projection integrally formed with said ground plate for connecting said ground plate to a device, whereby said projection is offset toward the front side of said housing relative to said ground bar.
- 39. The receptacle of claim 38, wherein said ground plate and said at least one projection are electrically conductive.
- 40. The receptacle of claim 38, wherein said at least one projection comprises at least two projections.
- 41. The receptacle of claim 38, wherein said ground bar has at least one recess formed therein for receiving a member.
- 42. The receptacle of claim 41, wherein said at least one recess has spiraled grooves formed therein for forming an interference fit with corresponding grooves on said member.
- 43. The receptacle of claim 41, wherein said at least one recess comprises at least two recesses symmetrically formed in said ground bar.
- 44. The receptacle of claim 41, wherein said member extends through a recess in said housing into said recess formed in said ground bar.
- 45. A receptacle, comprising:
a housing; a ground plate comprising:
a ground bar extending along an external side of said housing; and at least one projection integrally formed with said ground plate for connecting said ground plate to a device, said at least one projection offset relative to said ground bar toward a center of said housing.
- 46. The receptacle of claim 45, wherein said ground bar comprises at least one recess formed therein, and said receptacle further comprises a member extending into said at least one recess and forming an interference fit therein with said ground bar.
- 47. The receptacle of claim 46, wherein said housing has a recess formed therein, said member extending through said recess into said recess formed in said ground bar.
- 48. The receptacle of claim 47, further comprising an electrical shield, said electrical shield having a recess formed therein, said member extending through said recess in said electrical shield.
- 49. The receptacle of claim 47, further comprising a bulkhead having a recess formed therein, said member extending through said recess formed in said bulkhead.
- 50. The receptacle of claim 45, wherein said ground plate is electrically conductive.
- 51. A system for making an electrical connection, comprising:
a plug comprising at least one screw extending therefrom; and a receptacle, comprising:
a housing; and a ground plate comprising:
a ground bar extending along an external side of said housing; and at least one projection integrally formed with said ground plate for connecting said ground plate to a device, said at least one projection offset relative to said ground bar toward a center of said housing; and a member comprising a first distal end extending into a recess formed in said ground bar and forming an interference fit therewith, and a second distal end having a recess formed therein for receiving said at least one screw.
- 52. The system of claim 50, wherein said member extends through said housing.
- 53. The system of claim 50, further comprising a substrate, wherein said at least one projection extends into a recess formed in said substrate.
- 54. The system of claim 50, further comprising a bulkhead, said second distal end of said receptacle abutting said bulkhead and securing said receptacle to said bulkhead.
