Claims
- 1. A recharge and filter cartridge, comprising:
a ring of filter media having a first end, a second end, and circumscribing a central cavity, a cylindrical weir inwardly bounding and extending along at least a portion of the length of the media, and a flow passage along the length of the media allowing fluid flow between the media and the central cavity internally of the weir; a first end cap fixed to the first end of the media ring and a second end cap fixed to the second end of the media ring; and a recharge canister supported in the central cavity of the ring of filter media between said first and second end caps, and a flow path between the recharge canister and the weir, the recharge canister sealed around its periphery to the weir at an axial location along the canister such that fluid passing radially through the filter ring and through the flow passage is directed against one end of the recharge canister, the recharge canister including a flow opening through an annular sidewall of the canister to allow fluid to pass from the one end of the recharge canister into the flow path between the recharge canister body and the weir, the flow path extending to an outlet opening in the second end cap.
- 2. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 1, wherein the first end cap includes an annular seal outwardly bounding the periphery of the end cap.
- 3. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 1, wherein the weir is imperforate, and has one end supported against the second end cap, and the flow passage is defined between the other end of the weir and the first end cap.
- 4. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 3, wherein the weir inwardly supports the ring of filter media.
- 5. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 1, wherein the recharge canister has a cylindrical body, and the flow path defined between the recharge canister and the weir is an annular flow path, surrounding the recharge canister body.
- 6. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 1, wherein said first end cap includes a series of tabs projecting axially inward from the first end cap toward the second end cap, said tabs disposed in an evenly-spaced arrangement and supporting the one end of said recharge canister, the tabs defining a series of flow openings to allow fluid to flow to the one end of the recharge canister.
- 7. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 6, wherein each of said tabs includes a radially-outward facing shoulder, the shoulder supporting the annular sidewall at the one end of the recharge canister.
- 8. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 7, wherein said second end cap also includes a series of tabs projecting axially inward from the second end toward the first end, said tabs of said second end cap each including a radially-outward facing shoulder, and said recharge canister also includes an annular end wall at another end of the recharge canister, the shoulders of the tabs of the second end cap supporting the annular end wall at the other end of the recharge canister.
- 9. The recharge and filter cartridge as in claim 1, wherein said second end cap includes an annular body portion fixed to the second end of the filter media ring, said annular body portion defining a central opening for receiving a standpipe, and a resilient seal is carried by said second end cap and bounds the central opening.
- 10. The recharge and filter canister as in claim 1, wherein said second end cap includes an annular body portion fixed to the second end of the filter media ring, said annular body portion defining a central opening, another end of the recharge canister being accessible through said central opening in the second end cap such that an elongated member of a switch assembly can extend through the central opening and contact the other end of the recharge canister.
- 11. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 10, wherein the other end of the recharge canister includes a membrane which corrodes when the canister is exposed to refrigerant, and which is located to be accessible through the central opening in the second end cap by the elongated member of the switch assembly.
- 12. A recharge and filter assembly including a housing with an inlet and an outlet, and a filter cartridge disposed within the housing, said filter cartridge including:
a ring of filter media having a first end, a second end, and circumscribing a central cavity; a first end cap fixed to the first end of the media ring and a second end cap fixed to the second end of the media ring; a cylindrical imperforate weir inwardly supporting the media ring and extending from a first end supported by the second end cap to a distal end toward the first end cap, and an annular flow passage defined between the distal end of the weir and the first end cap allowing fluid flow between the media and the central cavity internally of the weir; and a recharge canister supported in the central cavity of the ring of filter media between said first and second end caps, the recharge canister having a cylindrical body and an annular flow path between the recharge canister body and the weir, the weir having an annular seal around its periphery sealing to the recharge canister body at an axial location along the body such that fluid passing from the inlet radially through the filter ring and the flow passage is directed against one end of the recharge canister and prevented from passing directly into the annular flow path, the recharge canister including a flow opening through an annular sidewall of the canister to allow fluid to pass from the one end of the recharge canister into the annular flow path between the weir and the recharge canister, the flow path extending to a central opening in the second end cap and then to the outlet.
- 13. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 12, wherein the first end cap includes an annular seal outwardly bounding the periphery of the end cap, the annular seal providing a fluid seal between the filter cartridge and the housing.
- 14. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 12, wherein said first end cap includes a series of tabs projecting axially inward from the first end cap toward the second end cap, said tabs disposed in an evenly-spaced arrangement and supporting the one end of said recharge canister, the tabs defining a series of flow openings to allow fluid to flow to the one end of the recharge canister.
- 15. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 14, wherein each of said tabs includes a radially-outward facing shoulder, the shoulder supporting the annular sidewall at the one end of the recharge canister.
- 16. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 15, wherein said second end cap also includes a series of tabs projecting axially inward from the second end toward the first end, said tabs of said second end cap each including a radially-outward facing shoulder, and said recharge canister also includes an annular end wall at another end of the recharge canister, the shoulders of the tabs of said second end cap supporting the annular end wall at the other end of the recharge canister.
- 17. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 12, wherein said second end cap includes an annular body portion fixed to the second end of the filter media ring, said annular body portion defining a central opening, said housing further including a closed end and an open end, and a standpipe projecting from the closed end of the housing toward the open end, said standpipe received in the central opening of the annular body portion of the second end cap, and a resilient seal carried by said second end cap and bounding the central opening in sealing relation with the standpipe.
- 18. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 17, wherein said second end cap includes a series of radially and axially outward projecting ribs on an axially-outward facing surface, said ribs supporting the filter media ring on a shoulder of the housing and providing flow passages between the housing and the second end cap, said flow passages between said ribs in fluid communication with a peripheral annular flow passage provided between an outer surface of the media ring and the housing.
- 19. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 12, wherein said second end cap includes an annular body portion fixed to the second end of the filter media ring, said annular body portion defining a central opening, said housing including a switch assembly having an elongated member projecting axially through the central opening in the second end cap into contact with the other end of the recharge canister.
- 20. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 19, wherein the other end of the recharge canister includes a membrane which corrodes and then ruptures when the canister is exposed to coolant, and the elongated member of the switch assembly is in contact with the membrane, the switch assembly providing an indication of when the membrane ruptures.
- 21. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 12, wherein an inlet flow path in fluid communication with the inlet is provided between the second end cap and the housing; an outer annular flow path in fluid communication with the inlet flow path is defined between the housing and a radially outer surface of the media ring; an inner flow path in fluid communication with the inlet flow path is provided to the one end of the recharge canister; an inner annular flow path is defined between a radially inner surface of the weir and the recharge canister; and an outlet flow path in fluid communication with the outlet is provided between the recharge canister and the second end cap, to the outlet in the housing.
- 22. A recharge and filter assembly including a housing with an inlet and an outlet, and a filter cartridge disposed within the housing, said filter cartridge including:
a ring of filter media having a first end, a second end, and circumscribing a central cavity; a first end cap fixed to the first end of the media ring and a second end cap fixed to the second end of the media ring, the second end cap including an opening allowing fluid communication with the outlet; and a recharge canister supported in the central cavity of the ring of filter media between said first and second end caps, the recharge canister having a first end and a second end, a first flow path through the media to the first end of the recharge canister, II and a second flow path, separate from the first flow path, from the first end of the recharge canister and between the filter media ring and the recharge canister to the opening in the second end cap and then to the outlet, and a switch assembly located in the housing, said switch assembly including an elongated member projecting axially through the opening in the second end cap into contact with the other end of the recharge canister.
- 23. The recharge and filter assembly as in claim 22, wherein the second end of the recharge canister has a membrane that corrodes and then ruptures when exposed to coolant, and the elongated member of the switch assembly is in contact with the membrane, and the switch assembly provides an indication of when the membrane ruptures.
