Claims
- 1. A method of making an anode for a battery having a zinc containing anode which comprises forming a slurry of finely divided zinc metal particles, applying a coating of the slurry to a metal substrate, drying the slurry, immersing the coated substrate in an aqueous alkaline electrolyte solution, positioning a cathode in the electrolyte, electrically connecting the anode with the cathode until the cathode is substantially completely discharged as evidenced by the evolution of hydrogen gas therefrom and maintaining the electrical connection for a period of time sufficient to oxidize in situ substantially all of the zinc metal in the coating to zinc oxide as evidenced by substantial cessation of hydrogen evolution at the cathode.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the zinc metal particle slurry includes a mercury compound.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the metal substrate is perforated and the metal is selected from the group consisting of nickel, copper, tin, silver, gold plated nickel, and copper or tin plated iron or steel.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte is an alkali metal hydroxide containing an amount of zincate.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the electrolyte is potassium hydroxide.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the electrolyte includes an additive selected from the group consisting of manganates and permanganates.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the oxidation step is continued until at least about 95% of the zinc metal is converted to the oxide.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte includes an additive selected from the group consisting of manganates and permanganates.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkaline electrolyte solution contains an alkali soluble inorganic compound additive of an alkaline soluble manganese compound.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte is an alkali metal hydroxide containing an amount of a stannate.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte is an alkali metal hydroxide containing an amount of a zincate and a stannate.
- 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte is an alkali metal hydroxide containing an amount of a zincate, a stannate and a permanganate or manganate.
