Claims
- 1. A positive displacement compressor means having a pressure actuated suction and/or discharge valve means, which comprises:
- (a) a valve seat means having a passage for fluid flow;
- (b) a flow control means having a blocking face that is movable towards the fluid passage to block the passage when the valve means is in a closed position and having a first sealing surface that is not disposed in the fluid passage when the fluid control means is in the closed position;
- (c) housing means for holding the flow control means in alignment with the seat means;
- (d) biasing means extending from the housing means and serving to urge the flow control means toward the seat means; and
- (e) a seal means held in alignment with the flow control means by the housing means and comprising a second sealing surface provided in a sliding and telescoping relationship with the first sealing surface of the flow control means, wherein the second sealing surface of the seal means is movable into a surrounding and sealing engagement with the first sealing surface of the flow control means when the valve means is moved into the closed position.
- 2. The compressor means of claim 1 wherein the seal means comprises a member having a cross-sectional shape selected from one of the group comprising a shallow arch, shallow V, shallow half arch and shallow conical washer.
- 3. The compressor means of claim 1 wherein the housing means for holding the flow control means in alignment with the seat means is a guard means having at least one passage for fluid flow.
- 4. The compressor means of claim 1 wherein a passage means provides for equalizing the pressure between the seal means and an upstream or exterior face of the valve seat means.
- 5. The compressor means of claim 1 wherein the flow control means comprises a circular ring or a circular disk.
- 6. The compressor means of claim 1 wherein the seal means is an annular member comprising a first inner diameter and a second outer diameter and wherein the seal means is stressed elastically and flattened against the valve seat means by the pressure difference which develops across the valve means when closed, and wherein an effect of the flattening deformation of the seal means is to reduce the first diameter of inner cylindrical surface and to increase the second diameter of an outer cylindrical surface of the seal means to thereby close a clearance gap associated with the sliding fit between the seal means and the flow control means and between the seal means and the housing means to provide sealing engagement therebetween.
- 7. The compressor means of claim 1 wherein the seal means has excess potential for deflection to provide continued sealing engagement with the flow control means in the event of wear at their sealing surfaces.
- 8. A positive displacement compressor means having a pressure actuated suction and/or discharge valve means, which comprises:
- (a) a valve seat means having passage for fluid flow;
- (b) a flow control means having a blocking face that is movable towards the fluid passage to block the passage when the valve means is in a closed position and having an outer surface that is not disposed in the fluid passage when the flow control means is in the closed position;
- (c) a spring means serving to urge the flow control means towards the closed position; and
- (d) a seal means held in alignment with the flow control means by a housing means and comprising a sealing surface provided in a sliding and telescoping relationship with the outer surface of the flow control means, wherein the sealing surface is movable into a surrounding and sealing engagement with the outer surface thereof when the valve means is moved into the fully closed position and wherein immediately prior to and at the instant of valve means opening, the flow control means has an exposed area on its upstream side subject to upstream pressure and another exposed area on its downstream side subject to downstream pressure, said areas being equal.
- 9. The compressor means of claim 8 wherein opening of the suction and/or discharge valve means begins when the upstream pressure operating on the upstream area of the flow control means becomes larger than the oppositely directed force of the downstream pressure operating on the downstream area of the flow control means plus the force of the biasing means, and wherein since the exposed areas of both sides of the flow control means are equal, the opening pressure differential remains constant regardless of valve operating pressure.
- 10. A positive displacement compressor means having a pressure actuated suction and/or discharge valve means, which comprises:
- (a) a seat means having a passage for fluid flow;
- (b) a flow control means for the fluid passage; and
- (c) a seal means having a frusto-conical shape and held in alignment with the flow control means by a housing means, the sealing means providing a sealing engagement between the flow control means with the valve means in a closed position and wherein the flow control means has an area on its upstream side subject to upstream pressure and another area on its downstream side exposed to downstream pressure, said areas being substantially equal prior to valve opening.
