Claims
- 1. An apparatus for purifying room air comprising the combination of
- first air conduction means for delivering air from the pumping location to said room, and
- second air conduction means for delivering air from the room to the pumping location,
- housing means laterally surrounding and underlying a treatment region and its contents in the room, and said housing means having foraminous means for supporting a living green plant with its roots in an air-permeable potting medium and its leaves thereabove,
- and air-outlet means for directing air from the first air conduction means into the housing means, and thereafter underneath the foraminous means and therethrough;
- wherein such housing means includes underlying waterproof base means adapted to collect excess water from above and open to the exterior for the escape of excess water.
- 2. Air-treatment apparatus according to claim 1, wherein
- the first conduction means connects to a substantially horizontal header means which extend within the housing means and have a plurality of air outlet means therefrom underneath the foraminous means.
- 3. Air-treatment apparatus according to claim 2, including airflow valve means in either one or both of the header means and the plurality of air outlet means.
- 4. An apparatus for purifying room air comprising the combination of
- first air conduction means for delivering air from the pumping location to said room, and
- second air conduction means for delivering air from the room to the pumping location,
- housing means laterally surrounding and underlying a treatment region and its contents in the room, and said housing means having foraminous means for supporting living green plant with its roots in an air-permeable potting medium and its leaves thereabove,
- shallow plant-receiving channel means extending along and above the foraminous means, and
- air-outlet means for directing air from the first air conduction means into the housing means, and thereafter underneath the foraminous means and therethrough.
- 5. Air-treatment apparatus according to claim 4, wherein
- the plant-receiving channel means extends laterally for only part of the width of the foraminous means and extends therealong for substantially the length thereof.
- 6. Air-treatment apparatus according to claim 4, further
- a layer of air-permeable potting medium overlying and supported by the plant-receiving channel means and the foraminous means.
- 7. Air-treatment apparatus according to claim 6, including at least one living green plant with roots in the potting medium.
- 8. In an air recirculation system having an air-conducting circuit including a centrally located air plenum chamber and a plurality of outlying rooms interconnected to the plenum chamber by air conduction means, wherein the improvement comprises:
- air-treating means located in one or more rooms and including
- a plurality of housings, each housing having horizontal foraminous means dividing it into an open-top upper compartment and a substantially closed lower compartment,
- substantially impermeable shallow dished means in the upper compartment extending laterally over only part of the width thereof and adapted to support the roots of one or more living green plants when present therein,
- air-outlet means from the air-conducting means into the lower compartment, and associated valve means adjusting flow of air into the lower compartment toward and through the foraminous means.
- 9. The air recirculation system according to claim 8, wherein the lower compartment has weepholes therein ineffective to enable air to escape readily therefrom but effective to pass excess water therethrough to the exterior.
- 10. The air recirculation system according to claim 9, further comprising base means underlying the housing and the weepholes to receive excess water and spaced at its top from the housing to enable such water to evaporate away.
- 11. The air recirculation system according to claim 9, further comprising a layer of mineral carbon supported on the foraminous means and beside the dished means as a deterrent to root growth at the foraminous means when a plant is on the dished means.
- 12. In a room air recirculation system comprising a hub-and-spoke arrangement having a central air-collection plenum chamber and a plurality of outlying rooms individually connected directly with the chamber by a plurality of air-conducting means; wherein the improvement comprises:
- air-treatment locations, at least one of said rooms including at each air-treatment location housing means containing
- foraminous means dividing the housing means into an open-top compartment and a substantially closed lower compartment; and
- located in the upper compartment, substantially impermeable plant-support means of substantially lesser lateral extent than the foraminous means.
- 13. The air-treatment system according to claim 12, wherein at each room having an air-treatment location, said air-conducting means from the plenum chamber connects to the lower compartment of the housing means.
- 14. The air-treatment system according to claim 13, wherein each housing means contains at least one living green plant with roots in potting medium supported on the substantially impermeable plant-support means and with leaves above the open top of the housing means in the room.
