Claims
- 1. In an adapter for converting an at least partially automatic firearm to use different size ammunition, the firearm including a chamber, the adapter having a barrel insert for being positioned in the breech end of the firearm chamber of said firearm and connected by an elongated fixed connection to a fixed receiver, said fixed connection having mounted thereon and intermediately positioned a longitudinally movable bolt, said bolt being provided with a recoil system attached thereto, the improvement in the recoil system for the bolt comprising:
- a rear lug mounted on the top of the fixed receiver with a hole therethrough whose center axis is essentially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the adapter, said rear lug having a face facing toward the firearm chamber;
- a bolt lug mounted on the top of the bolt with a hole therethrough having essentially the same center axis as said rear lug hole and having a face facing said rear lug face;
- a recoil spring of a length greater than the maximum separation distance between said faces of said rear and bolt lugs; and
- longitudinally extending guide rod means having a stop and ends for insertion into said holes and through said recoil spring with said stop limiting said guide rod means insertion into said rear lug for guiding said recoil spring to force the bolt away from the receiver and against the barrel insert, the recoil spring being at least generally exposed to the exterior of the adapter along its length at both its sides and top, the bolt being held on to the elongated fixed connection by said guide rod means.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1 wherein there is further included a longitudinal groove in the top of the bolt for mounting said recoil spring.
- 3. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the elongated, fixed connection between the receiver and the barrel insert comprises a single side rail located along one side of the receiver and the barrel insert and extending longitudinally between them, said side rail being the only fixed connection between the receiver and the barrel insert.
- 4. In an adapter for converting an at least partially automatic firearm to use different size ammunition, the firearm including a chamber and hammer, the adapter having a fixed receiver for being positioned a fixed distance behind the firearm chamber and a bolt between the fixed receiver and the firearm chamber for intermittent impact against the receiver, the improvement comprising:
- firing pin means located within and extending through the bolt and being spring biased toward the rear of the bolt, the rear head of the firing pin extending out past the rearmost portion of the bolt and being the first element to hit the receiver when the bolt is thrown back toward the receiver, the firing pin serving as resilient means for absorbing the initial part of the impact force of the bolt against the receiver caused by blow back.
- 5. The improvement of claim 4 wherein the ammunition to be used is a smaller size and wherein the position of the firing pin head when the bolt is in its foremost position being significantly further back toward the rear than the head of a firing pin of a standard bolt assembly for the firearm, causing the firearm hammer to rotate through only a partial arc with the adapter in the firearm as compared to the normal arc with a standard bolt in the firearm, requiring a shorter movement in recocking the hammer.
- 6. An adapter for converting an at least partially automatic firearm to use different size ammunition, the firearm including a chamber, a bolt held-open latch and a hammer, comprising:
- receiver means for being positioned a fixed distance behind the firearm chamber and a barrel insert insertable in the breech end of the firearm chamber;
- bolt means longitudinally movable and located between said receiver means and said barrel insert for feeding the ammunition to said barrel insert and for cooperating with the hammer to fire the ammunition, said bolt means including a rib on its lower side have terminal rib edge means at the forward end of said rib for mating with the bolt held-open latch to hold said bolt means back and open when required by the firearm operator by permitting the movement of the bolt held-open of the firearm up against said rib edge means to block the forward movement of said bolt means; and
- recoil means connected between said receiver means and said bolt means for forcing said bolt means to feed ammunition into said barrel insert, said recoil means being located at the top of the adapter above said bolt means.
