Claims
- 1. A process for recycling or reprocessing a cushioned shipping container, comprising the steps of:
- a. providing the container of reusable, reprocessable or replaceable elements, selected from the group consisting of (i) an external portion comprising wood fiber based products or plastic materials; and (ii) an internal portion comprising resilient cushioning inserts;
- b. shipping the container to a customer with a provider's product cushioned therein and with directions for returning the container to a designated fabricator or a third party after receipt by the customer of the provider's product;
- c. at the fabricator or said third party, inspecting and refurbishing or replacing the external or internal elements to make the container like new, and reprocessing the elements replaced; and
- d. repeating steps (b) and (c) during a useful lifetime of the container.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the external portion of the container comprises a cardboard or plastic carton.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the external portion of the container comprises a reclosable plastic carton.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein step (b) is performed by a parcel service.
- 5. The process of claim 4 further comprising the step wherein the parcel service picks up the used container from the customer and delivers it to the fabricator or third party.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the directions for returning the container to the fabricator or third party comprises a preaddressed shipping label.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein the shipping label is preaddressed with the name of the fabricator or third party and wherein it is enclosed in the container for attachment to the container.
- 8. The process of claim 6 wherein the shipping label is attached to the exterior of the container prior to step (b).
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein the third party comprises a resource center which (i) inspects the container; (ii) refurbishes, reprocesses or recycles the external and internal elements of the container; and (iii) reassembles a refurbished container.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein the resource center redirects the reprocessable elements or reassembled containers to their next destination.
- 11. The process of claim 9 wherein the resource centers are located regionally.
- 12. The process of claim 6 wherein the shipping label has encoded thereon data on the polymer composition of the plastic carton or the cushioning inserts.
- 13. The process of claim 12 wherein the fabricator or third party selected to receive the container is prepared to reprocess inserts having the encoded polymer composition.
- 14. The process of claim 1 wherein a sack or envelope is included in step (b) for returning the cushioning inserts to the fabricator or third party.
- 15. A process for recycling or reprocessing a cushioned shipping container, comprising the steps of:
- a. providing the container of removably, replaceable elements comprising a wood fiber based or plastic carton and resilient cushioning elements;
- b. shipping the container to a customer with a provider's product cushioned therein and with directions for returning the container to a fabricator or third party after receipt by the customer of the provider's product, wherein said directions for returning the container further comprise encoded data on the composition of the carton or the cushioning inserts for use by the fabricator or third party;
- c. at the fabricator or third party, inspecting and refurbishing or replacing the elements to make the container like new, and reprocessing the elements replaced; and
- d. repeating steps (b) and (c) during a useful lifetime of the container.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein the external portion comprises a reclosable plastic carton.
- 17. The process of claim 15 wherein the resilient cushioning inserts comprise polymer foam or polymer film.
- 18. The process of claim 15 wherein the fabricator or third party selected to receive the container is prepared to reprocess or recycle inserts or cartons having the encoded composition.
- 19. The process of claim 15 wherein a sack or envelope is included in step (b) for returning the cushioning inserts to the fabricator or third party.
- 20. A process for recycling or reprocessing cushioning inserts of a cushioned shipping container, comprising the steps of:
- a. providing the container of removably, replaceable elements comprising a wood fiber based or plastic carton and resilient cushioning elements;
- b. shipping the container to a customer with a provider's product cushioned therein and with directions for returning the cushioning inserts to a fabricator or third party after receipt by the customer of the provider's product, wherein said directions for returning the container further comprises encoded data on the composition of the cushioning inserts for use by the fabricator or third party;
- c. at the fabricator or third party, inspecting and reprocessing or replacing the cushioning inserts; and
- d. repeating steps (a) through (c) during a useful lifetime of the cushioning inserts.
- 21. The process of claim 20 wherein the resilient cushioning inserts comprise polymeric foam or polymer film.
- 22. The process of claim 20 wherein a sack or envelope is included in step (b) for returning the cushioning inserts to the fabricator or third party.
