Claims
- 1. An irradiated red blood cell-containing composition comprising red blood cells, a photosensitizer, and vitamin E or a derivative thereof, wherein the concentration of the vitamin E or derivative thereof is in an amount effective to reduce leakage of K.sup.+ from red blood cells undergoing photoinactivation in the presence of a photosensitizer.
- 2. The red blood cell-containing composition of claim 1, which is blood or a red blood cell concentrate.
- 3. The red blood cell-containing composition of claim 1, wherein the vitamin E derivative is .alpha.-tocopherol phosphate, .alpha.-tocopherol succinate or 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-2-carboxylic acid.
- 4. The irradiated red blood cell-containing composition of claim 3, wherein the vitamin E derivative is 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-2-carboxylic acid.
- 5. The red blood cell-containing composition of claim 1, wherein the concentration of vitamin E or derivative thereof is between 0.1 and 10 mM.
- 6. The red blood cell-containing composition of claim 1, wherein the photosensitizer compound is a phthalocyanine.
- 7. The red blood cell-containing composition of claim 6, wherein the phthalocyanine is AlPcS.sub.4.
- 8. The red blood cell-containing composition of claim 6, wherein the phthalocyanine is Pc5.
