Claims
- 1. A method for identifying an association between a consumer and an electronic biller whose bills are available for electronic presentment to the consumer, comprising:
transmitting, via a network and from a first network station associated with an electronic biller to a second network station associated with an identity service provider, a first signal representing demographic data associated with a customer of an electronic biller and a customer identifier which identifies the customer to the electronic biller, the customer identifier not revealing any demographic data associated with the customer; transmitting, via the network responsive to the transmitted first signal and from the second network station to a third network station associated with an electronic bill presentment service provider, a second signal representing the customer identifier, a first entity identifier which identifies the customer to the identity service provider, and identity information associated with the electronic biller, the first entity identifier not revealing any demographic data associated with the customer; transmitting, via the network and from the third network station to the second network station, a third signal representing demographic data associated with a consumer; transmitting, via the network responsive to the transmitted third signal and from the second network station to the third network station, a fourth signal representing a second entity identifier which identifies the consumer to the identity service provider, the second entity identifier not revealing any demographic data associated with the consumer; and transmitting, via the network and from the third network station, a fifth signal representing a notice of an identified association between the consumer and the electronic biller, the fifth signal transmitted in accordance with a determination that the consumer is a customer of the electronic biller based upon receipt of the transmitted second signal and the transmitted fourth signal.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmission of the first signal is one of prior to or subsequent to the transmission of the third signal.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the customer is a first one of a plurality of customers of the electronic biller; the customer identifier is a first one of a plurality of customer identifiers, each being associated with one of the plurality of customers; the first entity identifier is one of a first plurality of entity identifiers, each associated with a respective one of the plurality of customers; the first signal represents demographic data associated with each of the plurality of customers and the plurality of customer identifiers; the second signal represents the first plurality of entity identifiers, the plurality of customer identifiers, and the biller identifier; the consumer is a first one of a plurality of consumers; the second entity identifier is one of a second plurality of entity identifiers, each associated with a respective one of the plurality of consumers; the third signal represents demographic data associated with each of the plurality of consumers; and the fourth signal represents the second plurality of entity identifiers.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the fifth signal is transmitted to at least one of the first network station and a fourth network station associated with the consumer.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:
if the fifth signal is transmitted to the first network station, transmitting a sixth signal, via the network and from the first network station to the third network station, responsive to receipt of the transmitted fifth signal and representing at least one of billing information of the electronic biller for the consumer and demographic data associated with the consumer maintained by the electronic biller; wherein, if the fifth signal is transmitted to the first network station, the fifth signal includes the customer identifier; and wherein, if the fifth signal is transmitted to the fourth network station, the notice includes an indication that electronic presentment of bills of the electronic biller for the consumer has been automatically activated.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the third signal represents the consumer demographic data and a consumer identifier which identifies the consumer to the electronic bill presentment service provider; and the fourth signal represents the consumer identifier and the second entity identifier.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the electronic biller is a first electronic biller and the consumer is one of a plurality of consumers, and further comprising:
transmitting a sixth signal, via the network and from a fourth network station associated with a second electronic biller to the third network station, representing demographic data associated with at least one customer of the second electronic biller; wherein an association between at least one of the plurality of consumers and the second electronic biller is determined based upon receipt of the transmitted sixth signal.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the electronic biller is a first electronic biller and the consumer is one of a plurality of consumers, and further comprising:
transmitting a sixth signal, via the network and from the third network station to a fourth network station associated with a second electronic biller, representing demographic data associated with at least one of the plurality of consumers; transmitting a seventh signal, via the network and from the fourth network station to the third network station, representing a confirmation that at least one of the plurality of consumers is a customer of the second electronic biller, the seventh signal transmitted subsequent to receipt of the sixth signal.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the third signal is transmitted responsive to at least one of (i) a consumer request for the electronic bill presentment service provider to identify billers having bills for the consumer available for electronic presentment, and (ii) enrollment of the consumer for services of the electronic bill presentment service provider.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the second signal is received by the third network station prior to the transmission of the third signal; and the association between the consumer and the electronic biller is made responsive to a request for the electronic bill presentment service provider to identify customers of the electronic biller to whom electronic bills can be presented.
- 11. A database for storing information associated with electronic presentment of bills of a biller, comprising:
first data that identifies a consumer to only an identity service provider; and second data, stored in association with the first data, that identifies the consumer to only one of (i) a biller having bills available for electronic presentment to the consumer, and (ii) an electronic bill presentment service provider.
- 12. The database of claim 11, wherein the second data identifies the consumer to only a biller having bills available for electronic presentment to the consumer, and further comprising:
third data, stored in association with the first data, that identifies the consumer to only an electronic bill presentment service provider.
- 13. The database of claim 12, wherein the biller is a first biller having bills available for electronic presentment to the consumer, and further comprising:
fourth data, stored in association with the first data, that identifies the consumer to only a second biller having bills available for electronic presentment to the consumer, the second biller being different than the first biller.
- 14. A system for identifying an association between a consumer and an electronic biller whose bills are available for electronic presentment to the consumer, comprising:
a first network station associated with an electronic biller configured to transmit, via a network, a first signal representing demographic data associated with a customer of the electronic biller and a customer identifier which identifies the customer to the electronic biller, the customer identifier not revealing any demographic data associated with the customer; a second network station associated with an identity service provider configured to receive the transmitted first signal, to transmit, via the network and responsive to the transmitted first signal, a second signal representing the customer identifier, identity information associated with the electronic biller, and a first entity identifier which identifies the customer to the identity service provider, the first entity identifier not revealing any demographic data associated with the customer, to receive a third signal representing demographic data associated with a consumer, and to transmit, via the network and responsive to the transmitted third signal, a fourth signal representing a second entity identifier which identifies the consumer to the identity service provider, the second entity identifier not revealing any demographic data associated with the consumer; and a third network station associated with an electronic bill presentment service provider configured to receive the transmitted second signal, to transmit the third signal, to receive the transmitted fourth signal, and to transmit via the network a fifth signal representing a notice of an identified association between the consumer and the electronic biller, the fifth signal transmitted in accordance with a determination that the consumer is a customer of the electronic biller based upon receipt of the transmitted second signal and the transmitted fourth signal.
- 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the transmission of the first signal is one of prior to or subsequent to the transmission of the third signal.
- 16. The system of claim 14, further comprising:
a fourth network station associated with the consumer configured to receive the transmitted fifth signal; wherein the fifth signal is transmitted to at least one of the first network station and the fourth network station; wherein, if the fifth signal is transmitted to the first network station, the transmitted fifth signal includes the customer identifier; wherein the first network station is further configured to receive the transmitted fifth signal, to transmit, via the network, responsive to the receipt of the fifth signal and to the third network station, a sixth signal representing at least one of billing information of the electronic biller for the consumer and demographic data associated with the consumer maintained by the electronic biller; and wherein, if the fifth signal is transmitted to the fourth network station, the notice includes an indication that electronic presentment of bills of the electronic biller for the consumer has been automatically activated.
- 17. The system of claim 14, wherein:
the third signal represents the consumer demographic data and a consumer identifier which identifies the consumer to the electronic bill presentment service provider; and the fourth signal represents the consumer identifier and the second entity identifier.
- 18. The system of claim 14, wherein the electronic biller is a first electronic biller and the consumer is one of a plurality of consumers, and further comprising:
a fourth network station associated with a second electronic biller configured to transmit via the network a sixth signal representing demographic data associated with at least customer of the second electronic biller; wherein the third network station is further configured to receive the transmitted sixth signal and to determine an association between at least one of the plurality of consumers and the second electronic biller based upon the receipt of the transmitted sixth signal.
- 19. The system of claim 14, wherein the electronic biller is a first electronic biller and the consumer is one of a plurality of consumers, and further comprising:
a fourth network station associated with a second electronic biller configured to receive, via the network, a sixth signal representing demographic data associated with at least one of the plurality of consumers, and to transmit, via the network, a seventh signal representing a confirmation that at least one of the plurality of consumers is a customer of the second electronic biller, the seventh signal transmitted in subsequent to the receipt of the sixth signal; wherein the third network station is further configured to transmit, via the network, the sixth signal and to receive the transmitted seventh signal.
- 20. The system of claim 14, wherein the first signal is transmitted responsive to at least one of (i) a consumer request for the electronic bill presentment service provider to identify billers having bills for the consumer available for electronic presentment, and (ii) enrollment of the consumer for services of the electronic bill presentment service provider.
- 21. The system of claim 14, wherein:
the second signal is received by the third network station prior to the transmission of the third signal; and the association between the consumer and the electronic biller is made responsive to a request for the electronic bill presentment service provider to identify customers of the electronic biller to whom electronic bills can be presented.
