Claims
- 1. A reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system comprising
a. at least one emissions-control-agent dispenser for providing an organic-emissions-control agent; b. a furnace including an exhaust communicating with the atmosphere; and c. an emissions monitor capable of measuring at least one property of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace and through the exhaust to the atmosphere.
- 2. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, further comprising a controller in communication with at least the emissions-control-agent dispenser and the emissions monitor.
- 3. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 2, wherein the controller regulates an amount of emission-control agent provided by the emissions-control-agent dispenser in response to a measured value of the at least one property of the flue-gas.
- 4. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 3, wherein the controller regulates an amount of emission-control agent provided by the emissions-control-agent dispenser to control the at least one property of the flue-gas at a predetermine limit.
- 5. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 3, wherein the controller is further in communication with the furnace thereby regulating an amount of emission-control agent provided by the emissions-control-agent dispenser so as to be capable of controlling the at least one property of the flue-gas at a predetermined limit and an operation load of the furnace.
- 6. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, further including a fuel-preparation system.
- 7. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 6, wherein the fuel-preparation system comprises a fuel-handling system.
- 8. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 6, wherein the fuel-preparation system comprises one of a peat-preparation system, a petroleum-coke-preparation system, a coal-preparation system, and combinations thereof.
- 9. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 6, wherein the fuel-preparation system comprises a raw-coal-preparation system for transforming raw coal into crushed coal.
- 10. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 9, wherein the raw-coal-preparation system comprises a coal crusher.
- 11. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 9, wherein the raw-coal-preparation system includes a dispenser for providing a materials-handling agent.
- 12. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 11, wherein the dispenser for providing the materials-handling agent and the emissions-control-agent dispenser are the same.
- 13. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 9, wherein the raw-coal-preparation system includes a dispenser for providing a moisture-binding agent.
- 14. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 13, wherein the dispenser for providing the moisture-binding agent and the emissions-control-agent dispenser are the same.
- 15. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 9, wherein the raw-coal-preparation system includes a dispenser for providing a materials-handling agent and a moisture-binding agent.
- 16. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 15, wherein the dispenser for providing the materials-handling agent and the moisture-binding agent and the emissions-control agent dispenser are the same.
- 17. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 7, wherein the fossil-fuel-preparation system comprises a crushed-coal-preparation system for transforming crushed coal into pulverized coal.
- 18. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 17, wherein the crushed-coal-preparation system comprises a pulverizer.
- 19. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 17, wherein the crushed-coal-preparation system includes a dispenser for providing a materials-handling agent.
- 20. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 19, wherein the dispenser for providing the materials-handling agent and the emissions-control-agent dispenser are the same.
- 21. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 17, wherein the crushed-coal-preparation system includes a dispenser for providing a moisture-binding agent.
- 22. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 21, wherein the dispenser for providing the moisture-binding agent and the emissions-control-agent dispenser are the same.
- 23. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 17, wherein the crushed-coal-preparation system includes a dispenser for providing a materials-handling agent and a moisture-binding agent.
- 24. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 23, wherein the dispenser for providing the materials-handling agent and the moisture-binding agent and the emissions-control-agent dispenser are the same.
- 25. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 6, wherein the fuel-preparation system comprises a fuel blender capable of combining at least two fuels.
- 26. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 25, wherein the fuel blender is capable of combining at least two different grades of fuel.
- 27. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 25, wherein the fuel blender is capable of combining at least two different types of fuel.
- 28. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 25, wherein the fuel blender is capable of combining at least two different sizes of fuel.
- 29. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 25, wherein the fuel blender comprises one of a crusher, a pulverizer, and combinations thereof.
- 30. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, wherein the furnace comprises one of a stoker-firing furnace, a pulverized-fuel-fired furnace, and combinations thereof.
- 31. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 30, wherein the pulverized-fuel-fired furnace comprises one of a cyclone-type furnace and a fluidized-bed-type furnace.
- 32. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 30, wherein the furnace comprises one of a coal-fired furnace, a peat-fired furnace, a petroleum-coke-fired furnace, and combinations thereof.
- 33. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, wherein the furnace comprises one of a coal-fired furnace.
- 34. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, further including a steam generator.
- 35. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 34, further including a power generator.
- 36. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 35, the power generator comprises one of a turbine, a Sterling engine, a reciprocator steam engine, and combinations thereof.
- 37. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, wherein the emissions monitor comprise an opacity monitor.
- 38. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, wherein the at least one property of the flue-gas capable of being measured by the emissions monitor comprises opacity.
- 39. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, wherein the at least one property of the flue-gas capable of being measured by the emissions monitor comprises opacity and any one of carbon oxides, oxygen, nitrogen oxides, oxygen, sulfur oxides, particular matter, flow, and combinations thereof.
- 40. The reduced-emissions fossil-fuel-fired system according to claim 1, wherein the at least one property of the flue-gas capable of being measured by the emissions monitor comprises opacity and any one of CO, CO2, O2, NO, NO2, NOx, SO2, particular matter, flow, and combinations thereof.
- 41. An emissions-control-agent dispenser useable with a fossil-fuel-fired system including a furnace including an exhaust communicating with the atmosphere and an emissions monitor capable of measuring at least one property of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace through the exhaust to the atmosphere, the emissions-control-agent dispenser comprising an opacity-control-agent dispenser.
- 42. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 41, wherein the opacity-control-agent dispenser comprises a volumetric-feed dispenser.
- 43. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 42, wherein the volumetric-feed dispenser comprises a screw-feed dispenser.
- 44. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 41, wherein the opacity-control-agent dispenser comprises a mass-feed dispenser.
- 45. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 44, wherein the mass-feed dispenser comprises a weight-belt feeder.
- 46. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 41, wherein the opacity-control-agent dispenser is capable of providing an opacity-control agent at a rate so that at least the opacity of the flue-gas communicated through the exhaust to the atmosphere is substantially less than or substantially equal to a prescribed value.
- 47. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 46, wherein the opacity of the flue-gas communicated through the exhaust to the atmosphere is substantially less than or substantially equal to substantially about 40.
- 48. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 46, wherein the opacity of the flue-gas communicated through the exhaust to the atmosphere is substantially less than or substantially equal to substantially about 30.
- 49. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 46, wherein the opacity of the flue-gas communicated through the exhaust to the atmosphere is less than or equal to substantially about 20.
- 50. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 46, wherein the opacity of the flue-gas communicated through the exhaust to the atmosphere is substantially less than or substantially equal to substantially about 10.
- 51. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 41, wherein the opacity-control-agent dispenser comprises a superabsorbent-polymer dispenser.
- 52. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer having an average particle size of at least about 200 μm.
- 53. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer having an average particle size of at least about 250 μm.
- 54. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer at from about 0.001 weight % to about 5 weight % of the fuel feed to the furnace.
- 55. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer at from about 0.01 weight % to about 0.5 weight % of the fuel feed to the furnace.
- 56. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer at from about 0.05 weight % to about 0.25 weight % of the fuel feed to the furnace.
- 57. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer at from about 0.02 pound/ton of fuel to about 100 pounds/ton of fuel feed to the furnace.
- 58. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer at from about 0.2 pound/ton of fuel to about 10 pounds/ton of fuel feed to the furnace.
- 59. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer at from about 1 pound/ton of fuel to about 5 pounds/ton of fuel feed to the furnace.
- 60. The emissions-control-agent dispenser according to claim 51, wherein the superabsorbent-polymer dispenser is capable of dispensing a superabsorbent polymer having a form including any one of particles, fibers, foams, films, beads, rods, slurries, suspensions, solutions, and combinations thereof.
- 61. A controlled-opacity fossil-fuel-fired system comprising:
a. an opacity-control-agent dispenser for providing an opacity-control agent; b. a furnace including an exhaust communicating with the atmosphere; c. an opacity monitor capable of measuring at least the opacity of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace through the exhaust to the atmosphere; and d. a controller in communication with at least the opacity-control-agent dispenser and the opacity monitor.
- 62. A method for controlling emission from a fossil-fuel-fired system, the method comprising the steps of:
a. providing an amount of organic-emissions-control agent to a furnace of the fossil-fuel-fired system to control at least one property of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere at a prescribed-set-point value; b. measuring the at least one property of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere; c. comparing the measured value and the prescribed-set-point value of the at least one property of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere; d. adjusting as appropriate the amount of organic-emissions-control agent provided to the furnace so that the measured value and the prescribed-set-point value of the at least one property are substantially the same; and e. repeating steps (b) through (d).
- 63. A method for controlling opacity of emissions from a fossil-fuel-fired system, the method comprising the steps of:
a. providing an amount of opacity-control agent to a furnace of the fossil-fuel-fired system to control at a prescribed-opacity set-point value at least the opacity of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere; b. measuring at least the opacity of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere; c. comparing the measured-opacity value and the prescribed-opacity set-point value of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere; d. adjusting as appropriate the amount of opacity-control agent provided to the furnace so that the measured-opacity value and the prescribed-opacity set-point value are substantially the same; e. repeating steps (b) through (d).
- 64. A method for operating a fossil-fuel-fired system while controlling emission therefrom, the method comprising the steps of:
a. operating the fossil-fuel-fired system at a prescribed load-demand set-point value; b. providing a prescribed amount of opacity-control agent to a furnace of the fossil-fuel-fired system to control at least the opacity of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere at a prescribed-opacity set-point value while operating at the prescribed load-demand set-point value; c. adjusting the prescribed load-demand set-point value of the fossil-fuel-fired system to a different prescribed load-demand set-point value; d. measuring at least the opacity of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace operating at the different prescribed load-demand set-point value; e. comparing the measured-opacity value of the flue-gas communicated from the furnace to the atmosphere and the prescribed-opacity set-point value; f. adjusting as appropriate the amount of opacity-control agent provided to the furnace so that the measured-opacity value and the prescribed-opacity set-point value are substantially the same; and g. repeating steps (c) through (f).
- 65. A fuel usable in a fossil-fuel-fired system to control the emissions communicated by the fossil-fuel-fired system into the atmosphere, the fuel comprising:
a. at least one combustible material; and b. an organic-emissions-control agent, wherein the organic-emissions-control agent is capable of interacting with one of the fuel, the combustion products of the fuel, and the fuel and combustion products so as to reduce the emission of at least one aspect of the flue-gas thereby controlling the emissions communicated by the fossil-fuel-fired system into the atmosphere.
- 66. A fuel usable in a fossil-fuel-fired system to control the opacity of the flue-gas communicated by the fossil-fuel-fired system into the atmosphere, the fuel comprising:
a. at least one fossil fuel; and b. an opacity-control agent, wherein the opacity-control agent is capable of interacting with one of the fuel, the combustion products of the fuel, and the fuel and combustion products so as to reduce the opacity of the flue-gas communicated by the fossil-fuel-fired system into the atmosphere.
- 67. A process for limiting a discharge of airborne contaminants emitted from combustion processes comprising the step of adding a superabsorbent polymer to a fossil-fuel-fired system during the combustion process.
- 68. The process according to claim 67, wherein the superabsorbent polymer is added to the fuel prior to a conveyance of the fuel into a furnace.
- 69. The process according to claim 67, wherein the amount of superabsorbent polymer added to the combustion process is from about 0.001 weight % to about 5 weight % of the fuel used in the combustion process.
- 70. The process according to claim 67, wherein the superabsorbent polymer has an average particle size of at least about 200 μm.
- 71. The process according to claim 67, wherein the superabsorbent polymer has an average particle size of at least about 250 μm.
- 72. The process according to claim 67, wherein an amount of superabsorbent polymer added to the combustion process is from about 0.001 weight % to about 5 weight % of the fuel used in the combustion process.
- 73. A method of decreasing the concentration of contaminants present in a flue-gas stream emitted by a fossil-fuel-fired system, said method comprising adding a superabsorbent polymer to the fossil-fuel-fired system in a manner that enables a removal of contaminants from the flue gas stream prior to communicating the flue gas to the atmosphere.
- 74. The process according to claim 73, wherein the amount of superabsorbent polymer added to the combustion process is from about 0.001 weight % to about 5 weight % of the fuel used in the combustion process.
- 75. The process according to claim 73, wherein the superabsorbent polymer has an average particle size of at least about 200 μm.
- 76. An apparatus for decreasing the concentration of contaminants present in a flue-gas stream emitted by a fossil-fuel-fired system, said apparatus comprising:
a. at least one injector for introducing a superabsorbent polymer to the fossil-fuel-fired system in the combusted fossil-fuel flue-gas stream path; and b. an emissions monitor downstream of the injector and capable of measuring at least one property of the combusted fossil-fuel flue-gas stream communicated to the atmosphere; and c. a controller communicating with the at least one injector and the emissions monitor to control a flow of the superabsorbent polymer through the at least one nozzle and into the combusted fossil-fuel flue-gas stream path to control the concentration of contaminants present in a flue-gas stream downstream of the at least one injector.
