Claims
- 1. A process for refining resid in an ebullated bed reactor having a downcomer for recirculating refined liquid product and a liquid recycle pan fitted to an upper end thereof comprising the steps of:
- charging the reactor with catalyst particles, hydrogen and resid feedstock;
- ebullating the catalyst particles, hydrogen and resid feedstock within the reactor, thereby producing a mixture catalyst particles, refined product, resid feedstock and buoyant gases including oil vapors and hydrogen;
- collecting a first fraction of buoyant gases present below the recycle pan in a first reactor region and allowing the first fraction of gases to flow directly to a reactor vapor space located above an upper edge of the recycle pan, and thereby bypassing a reactor liquid located within and the above said recycle pan and below said vapor space; and
- collecting a second fraction of bouyant gases from a second reactor region located below the first reactor region and allowing the second fraction of gases to flow directly to the reactor vapor space, thereby bypassing a reactor liquid located within and above said recycle pan and below said vapor space.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the first fraction of gases is collected by allowing the gases to enter the open bottom of a frustoconical skirt radially located around the downcomer in said first region and wherein the bouyant gases are transferred directly to the reactor vapor space through a first conduit having a lower end opening into the frustoconical skirt, said conduit extending upwardly through said recycle pan into the reactor vapor space.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the second fraction of gases is collected by allowing the gases to enter an open bottom of a toroidal skirt having an upwardly decreasing cross-sectional area, said skirt being radially located around said downcomer in said second region and wherein the bouyant gases are transferred directly to the reactor vapor space by a second conduit having a lower end opening into the toroidal skirt and an upper end terminating in the reactor vapor space.
- 4. The process of claim 3 further including the step of creating a circulating current around said toroidal skirt to deflect catalyst particles downwardly within the reactor.
- 5. The process of claim 2 wherein the second fraction of gases is collected by allowing the gases to enter an open bottom of a toroidal skirt having an upwardly decreasing cross-sectional area, said skirt being radially located around said downcomer and wherein the gases are transferred directly to the reactor vapor space through a conduit having a lower end opening into the toroidal skirt and an upper end terminating in the reactor vapor space.
- 6. A process for refining resid in an ebullated bed reactor having a downcomer for recirculating refined liquid product, a liquid recycle pan fitted to an upper end thereof, and a plurality of conduits for transporting gas from below the recycle pan to a vapor space located above an upper edge of the recycle pan, said process comprising the steps of:
- charging the reactor with catalyst particles, hydrogen and resid feedstock;
- ebullating the catalyst particles, hydrogen and resid feedstock within the reactor, thereby producing a mixture of catalyst particles, refined product, resid feedstock and buoyant gases including oil vapors and hydrogen;
- collecting buoyant gas from at least two reactor locations located below the recycle pan;
- transporting the gases through the conduits in the absence of substantial quantities of resid feedstock and refined product directly into the vapor space, thereby preventing the collected gases from passing through substantial quantities of resid feedstock and refined product before the gases are introduced into the vapor space.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the collected gases are transported through conduits having a total cross-sectional area of less than about 1.5 percent of a cross-sectional area of the reactor.
- 8. The method of claim 6 including the steps of collecting gases from a first reactor region located below the recycle pan and from a second reactor region located below the first reactor region.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein at least some of the collected gases are collected by a frustoconical cone communicating with a lower end of a conduit.
