Claims
- 1. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display, with an image bearing surface facing upward, forming a canopy above a desktop;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of the image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel.
- 2. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 1 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image bearing surface from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 3. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display, with an image bearing surface facing upward, forming a canopy above a desktop;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of the image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a connecting mechanism means so that the semireflective transparent panel and the image display can be closed upon one another; and
- a positioning mechanism means so that the semireflective transparent panel, while closed upon the image display, does not substantially overhang a keyboard area between the first conferee and the image display.
- 4. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 3 wherein the connecting mechanism means is a hinge.
- 5. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 3 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image display from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 6. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of an image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a reconfiguration mechanism means so that the first conferee can select a direct view of the image bearing surface and eliminate the reflection of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 7. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 6 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image display from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 8. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of an image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a connecting mechanism means so that the semireflective transparent panel and the image display are closed upon one another with the image bearing surface facing parallel to and away from the first conferee.
- 9. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 8 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image display from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 10. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of an image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a connecting mechanism means so that the semireflective transparent panel closes upon the image display and a human interface hardware section.
- 11. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 10 wherein the human interface hardware section contains at least one of a computer keyboard, a hand held phone receiver with microphone and speaker, and a dialing communication input buttons.
- 12. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 10 wherein the terminal is a battery operated portable computer.
- 13. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 10 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image display from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 14. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of an image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a camera lens concealment means for concealing a camera lens of the video camera from the first conferee.
- 15. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 14 wherein the camera lens concealment means is provided by at least one of a moveable baffle, a shutter with a transparent mode and an opaque mode, and a custom anti-reflective layer placed at the front surface of the camera lens.
- 16. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 14 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image display from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 17. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of an image bearing surface of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel;
- a support structure with a table surface side and on the opposing side is attached the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a connecting mechanism means so that the semireflective transparent panel-side of the support structure closes upon the image display leaving the table surface side exposed to the first conferee.
- 18. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 17 wherein the support structure is a part of a desk.
- 19. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 17 wherein the support structure is a part of a conference table.
- 20. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 17 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image display from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 21. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display for viewing by the first conferee a reflection of an image bearing side of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- a fabrication means of the image display that blocks a direct view of a luminous image on the image display from the first conferee while viewing the reflection of the image display on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 22. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 21 wherein the image display produces an incomplete luminous image and a remotely located polarizer layer disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel for forming a complete luminous image.
- 23. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 21 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image bearing surface from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
- 24. An improved eye contact teleconferencing terminal for allowing a first conferee to maintain eye contact with a second conferee imaged by the teleconferencing terminal, the teleconferencing terminal comprising:
- a substantially planar image display;
- a semireflective transparent panel forming an angle of between about 30 and 60 degrees with the image display;
- a video camera disposed on a side of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display, the video camera capturing, through the semireflective transparent panel, an image of the first conferee who is disposed on the image display-side of the semireflective transparent panel; and
- Chemical hardening means of a glass substrate serving as the semireflective transparent panel for reducing the thickness of the glass substrate and thereby substantially reducing a reflected double image, viewable by the first conferee, that appears on a surface of the semireflective transparent panel opposite the image display.
- 25. The teleconferencing terminal of claim 24 wherein a layer of image blocking film is disposed between the image bearing surface of the image display and the semireflective transparent panel blocking a direct view of the image bearing surface from the first conferee viewing the reflection of the image bearing surface on the semireflective transparent panel.
