Claims
- 1. A refrigeration system comprising:
a refrigeration case; an evaporator disposed in said refrigeration case; a condenser and compressor coupled in fluid communication with said evaporator; said condenser being disposed on said refrigeration case; said compressor comprising a pulse width modulated variable capacity compressor; a load sensor disposed in said refrigeration case; a controller responsive to said load sensor and coupled to said compressor for providing a variable duty cycle control signal to said compressor whereby said compressor is modulated between first capacity and second capacity states while operating to thereby adjust the operating capacity of the refrigeration system to its thermal load; and a module for periodically defrosting said refrigeration system.
- 2. The refrigeration system in claim 1 wherein the frequency between defrosts is adaptive as a function of said duty cycle.
- 3. The refrigeration system in claim 1 wherein the defrost time is shortened by increasing said duty cycle to maximum during defrost.
- 4. The refrigeration system in claim 1 wherein defrost initiation is a function of the difference between a duty cycle indicative of a frost-free condition and a duty cycle indicative of a heavy-frost condition.
- 5. The refrigeration system of claim 1 wherein said system is adapted to cool a load, and wherein said duty cycle is based on a parameter indicative of the temperature of the load being cooled.
- 6. The refrigeration system of claim 1 wherein said system is adapted to cool a load, and wherein said duty cycle is based on the temperature of the medium cooling the load.
- 7. The refrigeration system of claim 6 wherein the medium is the air in a space to be cooled.
- 8. The refrigeration system of claim 1 wherein said system is adapted to cool a load, and wherein said duty cycle is based on the difference between the set point temperature and the temperature of the medium to be cooled.
- 9. The refrigeration system of claim 8 wherein the medium is the air in a space to be cooled.
- 10. A method for controlling defrost in a refrigeration system, including:
pulse width modulating a variable capacity compressor; sensing a system load; communicating a variable duty cycle control signal to said variable capacity compressor based on said sensed load; modulating said compressor between a first capacity state and a second capacity state to adjust an operating capacity of the refrigeration system; and periodically defrosting a component of the refrigeration system as a function of said duty cycle.
- 11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of shortening a time period required for defrosting by increasing said duty cycle to a maximum during defrost.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of defrosting includes initiating defrost as a function of a difference between a duty cycle indicative of a frost-free condition and a duty cycle indicative of a heavy frost condition.
