Claims
- 1. A refrigerated compartment having an air filtration system, comprising:
a plurality of walls defining said refrigerated compartment; an air inlet passage and an air outlet passage extending through at least one of said walls; a plenum chamber positioned outside of said refrigerated compartment having an air inlet port and an air outlet port wherein said air inlet port and air outlet port are respectively fluidly coupled to said air inlet passage and said air outlet passage; a means effective to produce airflow between said air inlet port and said air outlet port; and an air filter assembly disposed within said plenum.
- 2. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said means effective to produce airflow is a fan.
- 3. An apparatus as in claim 2, wherein said means effective to produce airflow is disposed inside said plenum chamber.
- 4. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said air filter assembly comprises an air permeable membrane having a pore size up to about 1.
- 5. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said air filter assembly further comprises an air permeable membrane having bactericidal properties.
- 6. An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said air filter assembly comprises a plurality of air filters serially arranged with respect to decreasing pore size.
- 7. An apparatus as in claim 1, said plenum chamber further including radiant disinfection means positioned upstream of said filter whereby air flowing through said plenum chamber is disinfected thereby.
- 8. An apparatus as in claim 5, wherein said radiant disinfection means is an ultraviolet lamp including a means for energizing said ultraviolet lamp.
- 9. A refrigerated compartment having an air filtration system, comprising:
a plurality of walls defining said refrigerated compartment wherein said compartment has interior airspace; at least one of said walls having a cavity therein forming a plenum chamber, said plenum chamber having at least one air inlet port and an air outlet port wherein said plenum chamber is in fluid communication with said interior airspace; a means effective to produce airflow between said air inlet port and said air outlet port; and an air filter assembly disposed within said plenum.
- 10. An apparatus as in claim 9, wherein said means effective to produce airflow is a fan.
- 11. An apparatus as in claim 9, wherein said means effective to produce airflow is disposed inside said plenum chamber.
- 12. An apparatus as in claim 9, wherein said air filter assembly comprises a microfilter.
- 13. An apparatus as in claim 9, wherein said air filter assembly comprises an air permeable membrane having a pore size up to about 1 .
- 14. An apparatus as in claim 9, wherein said air filter assembly comprises an air permeable membrane having bactericidal properties.
- 15. An apparatus as in claim 9, wherein said air filter assembly comprises a plurality of air filters.
- 16. An apparatus as in claim 15, wherein said plurality of air filters are serially arranged with respect to decreasing pore size.
- 17. An apparatus as in claim 9, said plenum chamber further including radiant disinfection means positioned upstream of said filter whereby air flowing through said plenum chamber is disinfected thereby.
- 18. An apparatus as in claim 17, wherein said radiant disinfection means is an ultraviolet lamp including a means for energizing said ultraviolet lamp.
- 19. A refrigerated compartment for commercial transport, comprising:
a plurality of walls defining said refrigerated compartment having an interior airspace; a plenum chamber positioned within said interior airspace and fixedly attached to one of said walls, said plenum chamber having an air inlet port and an air outlet port wherein said plenum chamber is in fluid communication with said interior airspace; a fan disposed inside said plenum chamber effective to produce airflow between said air inlet port and said air outlet port; and air filter assembly disposed within said plenum.
- 20. An apparatus as in claim 19, wherein said air filter assembly comprises an air permeable membrane having a pore size up to about 1 .
- 21. An apparatus as in claim 19, wherein said air filter assembly further comprises an air permeable membrane having bactericidal properties.
- 22. An apparatus as in claim 19, wherein said air filter assembly comprises a plurality of air filters serially arranged with respect to decreasing pore size.
- 23. An apparatus as in claim 19, said plenum chamber further including radiant disinfection means positioned upstream of said filter whereby air flowing through said plenum chamber is disinfected thereby.
- 23. An apparatus as in claim 23, wherein said radiant disinfection means is an ultraviolet lamp including a means for energizing said ultraviolet lamp.
