Claims
- 1. A refuse compaction apparatus including a container for storing refuse, a tailgate mounted on the container for pivotal movement between an opened and a closed position, the tailgate in its opened position providing for refuse to be discharged from the container and the tailgate in its closed position forming a closure with the storage container, the improvement comprising:
- a keeper attached to the container,
- a latch disposed on the keeper and engageable with the keeper with the tailgate in its closed position,
- means to provide rotational movement of the latch with the tailgate into a position relative to the container to provide for a latching relationship with the keeper, and
- means responsive to a disposition of the latch for a latching relationship with the keeper to provide a translational movement of the latch into contact with the keeper to maintain the tailgate in a closed position relative to the storage container.
- 2. The refuse compaction apparatus of claim 1 including
- first and second means included in the latch in operatively coupled relationship and movable relative to each other for maintaining the keeper in a nested and latched relationship between the first and second means.
- 3. The refuse compaction apparatus of claim 2 including
- a pivot disposed on said tailgate and included in the latch,
- said latch being rotatably connected to said tailgate through said pivot,
- said first and second means constituting a threaded rod and a threaded tube in threaded engagement with the rod,
- said threaded tube having a nose portion for engagement with said keeper and said threaded rod having an enlargement for engagement with the keeper, and
- means to rotate said tube to advance said tube with respect to said rod and to bring said nose portion of said tube into contact with said keeper with the latch rotated to a position to provide for a latching relationship with said keeper.
- 4. The refuse compaction apparatus of claim 3 wherein
- said means to rotate said tube includes a handle connected to said tube.
- 5. In combination in refuse compaction apparatus,
- a storage body for storing refuse,
- a tailgate mounted on the storage body for pivotal movement between an opened and a closed position, the tailgate providing for a discharge of refuse from the storage body in its opened position and forming a closure with the storage body in its closed position,
- a keeper fixedly attached to the storage body, and
- first and second means disposed on the tailgate in straddled relationship to the keeper and constructed to define detents with the keeper when positioned against the keeper and movable relative to each other for positioning against the opposite surfaces of the keeper to retain the tailgate in locked relationship to the storage body.
- 6. The combination set forth in claim 5, including,
- means disposed on the first and second means for facilitating an abutting relationship between the first means and the keeper and between the second means and the keeper.
- 7. In combination in refuse compaction apparatus,
- a storage body for storing refuse,
- a tailgate mounted on the storage body for pivotal movement between an opened and a closed position, the tailgate providing for a discharge of refuse from the storage body in its opened position and forming a closure with the storage body in its closed position,
- a keeper fixedly attached to the storage body, and
- first and second means disposed on the tailgate in straddled relationship to the keeper and movable relative to the keeper for retaining the keeper in locked relationship to the tailgate,
- the first and second means being disposed in threaded relationship to provide for a translational movement of the first and second means in abutting relationship to the keeper in accordance with a rotary movement of one of the first and second means relative to the other one of the first and second means.
- 8. The combination set forth in claim 7, including,
- a handle on a particular one of the first and second means to facilitate a rotational movement of that one of the first and second means relative to the other one of the first and second means.
- 9. The combination set forth in claim 8, including,
- sealing means disposed between the storage body and the tailgate for providing a sealed relationship between the storage body and the tailgate in the closed position of the storage body and the tailgate.
- 10. In combination in refuse compaction apparatus,
- a storage body for storing refuse,
- a tailgate mounted on the storage body for pivotal movement between an opened and closed position, the tailgate providing for a discharge of refuse from the storage body in its opened position and forming a closure with the storage body in its opened position,
- a keeper fixedly attached to the storage body,
- first and second means disposed in an adjustably coupled relationship and constructed to straddle the keeper and shaped to define detents with the keeper when abutting the keeper and adjustable relative to each other to provide the abutting relationships with the keeper, and
- sealing means on the storage body and the tailgate for sealing the tailgate relative to the storage body in the closed position of the storage body.
- 11. The combination set forth in claim 10 wherein
- the storage body includes lateral supporting means and the sealing means include:
- resilient sealing means disposed against the lateral supporting means and
- a pair of retaining members for retaining the resilient sealing means against the lateral supporting means, at least one of the retaining members being flexible to provide for a replacement of the resilient sealing means.
- 12. In combination in refuse compaction apparatus,
- a storage body for storing refuse,
- a tailgate mounted on the storage body for pivotal movement between an opened and closed position, the tailgate providing for a discharge of refuse from the storage body in its opened position and forming a closure with the storage body in its closed position,
- a keeper fixedly attached to the storage body,
- first and second means disposed in an adjustably coupled relationship and constructed to straddle the keeper and adjustable relative to each other to retain the keeper in fixed relationship between them, and
- sealing means on the storage body and the tailgate for sealing the tailgate relative to the storage body in the closed position of the storage body,
- the resilient sealing means including an upstanding portion having a hollow interior for deformation of the upstanding portion and further includes a base portion and wherein
- the flexible retaining member being disposed against the base member and is movable from the base portion to provide for a removal of the resilient sealing means from the lateral supporting means and to provide for an adjustment in the position of the resilient sealing means relative to the lateral support means.
- 13. The combination set forth in claim 12 wherein
- the first and second means are disposed in a telescoped and threaded relationship and are adjustable relative to each other by rotating the first means relative to the second means and wherein
- means are provided on the first and second means for retaining the keeper in fixed position between the first and second means.
- 14. In combination in refuse compaction apparatus,
- a storage body for storing refuse,
- a tailgate mounted on the storage body for pivotal movement between an opened and closed position, the tailgate providing for a discharge of refuse from the storage body in its opened position and forming a closure with the storage body in its closed position,
- a keeper fixedly attached to the storage body,
- first and second means disposed in an adjustably coupled relationship and constructed to straddle the keeper and adjustable relative to each other to retain the keeper in fixed relationship between them, and
- sealing means on the storage body and the tailgate for sealing the tailgate relative to the storage body in the closed position of the storage body,
- the first and second means being disposed in a telescoped and threaded relationship and being adjustable relative to each other by rotating the first means relative to the second means.
- 15. In combination in refuse compaction apparatus,
- a storage body for storing refuse,
- a tailgate mounted on the storage body for pivotal movement between an opened and closed position, the tailgate providing for a discharge of refuse from the storage body in its opened position and forming a closure with the storage body in its closed position,
- a keeper fixedly attached to the storage body,
- first and second means disposed in an adjustably coupled relationship and constructed to straddle the keeper and adjustable relative to each other to retain the keeper in fixed relationship between them, and
- sealing means on the storage body and the tailgate for sealing the tailgate relative to the storage body in the closed position of the storage body,
- the first and second means being disposed in a telescoped and threaded relationship and being adjustable relative to each other by rotating the first means relative to the second means and wherein
- means on the first and second means for retaining the keeper in fixed position between the first and second means and wherein
- a handle on the first means to facilitate the rotation of the first means relative to the second means.
