Claims
- 1. A flexible package entirely formed from a continuous web of substantially constant thickness packaging material, comprising in combination,
a) a closed package body comprising at least one thickness of flexible material and having opposite ends, b) at least one package body end seal, c) a repeatably openable and resealable interlocking closure comprising inner and outer interlocking portions integral with the said package body and comprising multiple stacked and sealed together continuously connected layers of the packaging material, said closure being operative to open and close said package body to provide and prevent, respectively, access to the package interior, and at least a part of said interlocking closure outer portion comprising at least one more layer than said inner portion.
- 2. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said multiple stacked and sealed together continuously connected layers of the packaging material which forms said resealable interlocking closure comprises at least three thicknesses.
- 3. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said resealable interlocking closure is arcuate in shape.
- 4. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said inner and outer interlocking portions of said resealable interlocking closure are both substantially of arrowhead shape in cross section.
- 5. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said at least one end seal is thermally fused end portions of the material of which the package body is made.
- 6. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said flexible material of which said package body, said at least one end seal, and said interlocking closure are formed is a heat seal coated plastic film.
- 7. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said flexible material of which said package body, said at least one end seal, and said interlocking closure are formed is a heat seal coated non-plastic film.
- 8. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said package body further includes a pair of spaced apart body end seals and a longitudinal package seal extending between said pair of spaced apart body end seals, and wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension, said spaced apart body end seals being disposed across the narrower dimension of the package, and said resealable interlocking closure being disposed between said spaced apart body end seals along said longer package dimension.
- 9. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension, and wherein said at least one package body end seal comprises a pair of package body end seals, one of said pair of package body end seals being located at one end of the said package body and the other of said pair of package body end seals being located at the other end of said package body, the said resealable interlocking closure being located on the package body side of one of said end seals, and wherein said resealable interlocking closure and said pair of package body end seals are all disposed across the narrower dimension of the package.
- 10. A package as set forth in claim 1 wherein said resealable interlocking closure extends only partly across said package body, the extension of said closure across the rest of said package body being a permanent package seal.
- 11. A flexible package entirely formed from a continuous web of substantially constant thickness packaging material, comprising in combination,
a) a closed package body comprising at least one thickness of flexible material and having opposite ends and a longitudinal package seal extending between said package ends, b) at least one package body end seal, c) a repeatably openable and resealable interlocking closure comprising inner and outer interlocking portions integral with said package body and comprising multiple stacked and sealed together continuously connected layers of the packaging material, said closure being operative to open and close said package body to provide and prevent respectively access to the package interior, said interlocking closure outer portion including said package longitudinal seal.
- 12. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension and upper and lower faces, said package longitudinal seal being disposed in one of said upper and lower faces, and said resealable interlocking closure being disposed across the narrower dimension of the package.
- 13. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension and said resealable interlocking closure is disposed across the narrower dimension of the package.
- 14. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension and a pair of spaced apart package body end seals, said resealable interlocking closure and said package body end seals being disposed across the said narrower dimension of the package.
- 15. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said at least one package body end seal comprises a pair of package body end seals, one of said pair of end seals being located at one end of the said package body and the other of said pair of end seals being located at the other end of said package body, and wherein the said resealable interlocking closure is located on the package body side of one of said end seals.
- 16. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said at least one package body end seal comprises a pair of package body end seals, one of said pair of end seals being located at one end of the said package body and the other of said pair of end seals being located at the other end of said package body, wherein the said resealable interlocking closure is located on the package body side of one of said end seals, wherein said multiple stacked and sealed together layers of the packaging material which forms said resealable interlocking closure comprises at least three layers, and wherein said flexible material of which said package body, said end seals, and said interlocking closure are formed is a heat seal coated plastic film.
- 17. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said resealable interlocking closure is located at the opposite end of said package body from the said at least one end seal.
- 18. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes at least one hinge formation positioned substantially centrally along the length thereof.
- 19. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes a plurality of hinge formations spaced along the length thereof.
- 20. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes a plurality of reinforcing V-notch formations spaced along the length thereof.
- 21. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes at least one hinge formation positioned substantially centrally along the length thereof and a plurality of spaced apart reinforcing V-notch formations.
- 22. A package as set forth in claim 11 wherein said multiple stacked and sealed together continuously connected layers of the packaging material which forms said resealable interlocking closure comprises at least three thicknesses.
- 23. A package as set forth in claim 12 wherein said at least one package longitudinal seal is positioned substantially centrally between the edges of the package face of which it forms a part.
- 24. A package as set forth in claim 16 wherein said end seals are thermally fused end portions of the material of which the package body is made.
- 25. A package as set forth in claim 16 wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension, and said resealable interlocking closure and both of said package end seals are disposed across the narrower dimension of the package.
- 26. A flexible package entirely formed from a continuous web of substantially constant thickness packaging material, comprising in combination,
a) a closed package body comprising at least one thickness of flexible material and having opposite ends and at least upper and lower faces, b) at least one package body end seal, c) at least one package longitudinal seal extending longitudinally between said package ends and forming a part of one of said upper and lower faces, said longitudinal seal being positioned between and non-adjacent to the edges of the package face of which it forms a part, d) a repeatably openable and resealable interlocking closure comprising inner and outer interlocking portions integral with the said package body and comprising multiple stacked and sealed together continuously connected layers of the packaging material, said closure being operative to open and close said package body to provide and prevent respectively access to the package interior, said interlocking closure outer portion including at least the portion of the package face which contains said package longitudinal seal.
- 27. A package as set forth in claim 26 wherein said at least one package longitudinal seal is positioned substantially centrally between the edges of the package face of which it forms a part.
- 28. A flexible package entirely formed from a continuous web of substantially constant thickness packaging material, comprising in combination,
a) a closed package body comprising at least one thickness of flexible packaging material and having opposite ends and a longitudinal package seal extending between said package ends, b) at least one package body end seal, c) a repeatably openable and resealable interlocking closure comprising inner and outer interlocking portions integral with said package body and comprising multiple stacked and sealed together continuously connected layers of the packaging material, said closure being operative to open and close said package body to provide and prevent respectively access to the package interior, and d) at least one additional thickness of flexible heat sealable material heat sealed to and forming a part of at least a portion of said interlocking closure outer portion.
- 29. A package as set forth in claim 28 wherein said at least one additional thickness of of flexible heat sealable material extends substantially the full length of said interlocking closure outer portion.
- 30. A package as set forth in claim 28 wherein said longitudinal package seal forms a part of said interlocking closure outer portion, and said at least one additional thickness of flexible heat sealable material comprises part of that portion of said longitudinal package seal which forms a part of said interlocking closure outer portion.
- 31. A flexible package formed from a continuous web of substantially constant thickness packaging material and at least one discrete strip of substantially constant thickness flexible material, comprising in combination,
a) a closed package body comprising at least one thickness of flexible material and having opposite ends, b) at least one package body end seal, c) a repeatably openable and resealable interlocking closure comprising inner and outer interlocking portions integral with the said package body and comprising stacked and sealed together layers of said packaging material and at least one discrete strip of substantially constant thickness flexible material, said closure being operative to open and close said package body to provide and prevent, respectively, access to the package interior, and at least a part of said interlocking closure outer portion comprising at least one more layer than said inner portion.
- 32. A package as set forth in claim 31 wherein said package body further includes a pair of spaced apart body end seals and a longitudinal package seal extending between said pair of spaced apart body end seals, and wherein said package is rectangular in shape having a longer and a narrower dimension, said spaced apart body end seals being disposed across the narrower dimension of the package, and said resealable interlocking closure being disposed between said spaced apart body end seals along said longer package dimension.
- 33. A package as set forth in claim 31 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes at least one hinge formation positioned substantially centrally along the length thereof.
- 34. A package as set forth in claim 31 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes a plurality of reinforcing V-notch formations spaced along the length thereof.
- 35. A package as set forth in claim 31 wherein said flexible material of which said package body, said at least one end seal, and said interlocking closure are formed are heat seal coated plastic films.
- 36. A package as set forth in claim 32 wherein said resealable interlocking closure further includes at least one hinge formation positioned substantially centrally along the length thereof and a plurality of spaced apart reinforcing V-notch formations.
- 37. A package as set forth in claim 32 further including at least one additional thickness of flexible heat sealable material heat sealed to and forming a part of at least a portion of said interlocking closure outer portion.
- 38. A method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package, consisting of the steps of,
a) transporting in lengthwise direction a web of flexible packaging material of selected width and indeterminate length, b) layering said web to form at least one stack of packaging material, c) securing together the layers of said at least one stack of packaging material to form at least one strip, d) forming inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure, at least said interlocking closure inner portion being formed from said at least one strip of packaging material and for at least a part of its length being thinner in cross section than said interlocking closure outer portion.
- 39. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 38 wherein said at least one strip of packaging material is formed extending widthwise of the web, and including the further steps of folding said at least one strip of packaging material upon itself with the ends of said strip in overlapped relationship, and forming said folded strip into said inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure, said outer portion including said overlapped strip ends.
- 40. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 38 wherein said at least one strip of packaging material consists of two strips of packaging material spaced apart from one another and from the longitudinally extending edges of said web and are formed continuosly extending lengthwise of said web.
- 41. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 38 wherein the part of said interlocking closure outer portion which is thicker than said interlocking closure inner portion is formed by the further step of adding thereto at least one additional thickness of material.
- 42. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 38 wherein said step of layering said web to form at least one strip of packaging material consists of the step of fanfolding said web of packaging material to form said stack, and the step of heat sealing said stack to form said strip.
- 43. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 38 wherein said step of layering said web to form at least one strip of packaging material consists of the step of heat sealing a strip of heat sealable material to the packaging film.
- 44. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 38 wherein said steps of forming inner and outer portions of the resealable interlocking closure consists of the steps of,
a) positioning said strip between an upper heated male die and a lower heated female die of a forming device, b) moving said dies toward one another into mating position and forming the strip into the recess of said female die, c) moving a pair of colinearly disposed forming plates toward one another and orthogonally to said male die and pressing the upper sides of the strip against the sides of said male die, d) retracting said male die out of said female die and out from between said forming plates, e) moving said forming plates inward to pinch together the portion of the strip therebetween and form an arrowhead shape in the interfitted parts of the resealable closure, f) moving said female die toward said forming plates to move the rear surfaces of the arrowhead into a more planer alignment, rendering the arrowhead more triangular in shape, g) retracting said forming plates and female die to their initial positions in preparation for forming the next closure.
- 45. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 39 wherein the steps of folding said strip upon itself with the ends of said strip in overlapped relationship and forming said folded strip into inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure positions said overlapped strip ends substantially centrally along the length of said resealable interlocking closure outer portion.
- 46. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 39 including the further step of forming at least one hinge structure along the length of said closure.
- 47. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 39 including the further step of forming a plurality of reinforcing V-notches along the length of said closure.
- 48. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 39 wherein the steps of folding said strip upon itself with the ends of said strip in overlapped relationship and forming said folded strip into inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure positions said overlapped strip ends substantially centrally along the length of said resealable interlocking closure outer portion, and further including the steps of forming at least one hinge structure along the length of said closure and forming a plurality of reinforcing V-notches along the length of said closure.
- 49. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 39 wherein said flexible packaging material has thermoplastic properties, and wherein the steps of securing together said layered web of packaging material and forming said interlocking closure are both steps of heat sealing.
- 50. The method of making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 39 wherein said packaging material has surface thermoplastic heat sealing properties, and further including the step of removing from a portion of one of the outer layers of said strip of packaging material its said thermoplastic heat sealing properties.
- 51. Apparatus for making a package comprising a package body, a resealable interlocking closure, and end seals at opposite ends of the package, comprising in combination,
a) means for transporting in lengthwise direction a web of flexible packaging material of selected width and indeterminate length, b) means for layering said web at package length intervals to form stacks of packaging material extending widthwise of the web, c) means for securing together the layers of each of said stacks of packaging material to form a strip, d) packaging means for wrapping a product within that portion of the flexible packaging material extending between and including one of a sequential pair of said strips of packaging material, said packaging means folding said strip upon itself with the ends of said strip in overlapped relationship, e) package sealing and severing means for sealing and severing from one another adjacent ends of successive packages, and f) interlocking closure forming means for simultaneously forming the inner and outer separable portions of said resealable interlocking closure with the inner portion fitted within the outer portion, said outer portion including said overlapped strip ends.
- 52. Apparatus for making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package, comprising in combination,
a) means for transporting in lengthwise direction a web of flexible packaging material of selected width and indeterminate length, b) means for layering said web in the direction of the running length to form a stack of packaging material extending widthwise of the web, c) means for securing together the layers of said stack of packaging material to form a strip, d) means for folding said strip upon itself with the ends of said strip in overlapped relationship, and e) means for forming said folded strip into inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure, said outer portion including said overlapped strip ends.
- 53. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 wherein said means for folding said strip upon itself with the ends of said strip in overlapped relationship so that said overlapped strip ends become a part of said resealable closure outer portion, positions said overlapped ends to be located substantially centrally along the length of said resealable closure outer portion.
- 54. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 further including means for forming at least one hinge structure along the length of said resealable closure.
- 55. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 further including means for forming a plurality of reinforcing V-notches along the length of said resealable closure.
- 56. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 wherein said means for forming said folded strip into inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure simultaneously forms the inner and outer separable portions of said resealable interlocking closure with the inner portion fitted within the outer portion.
- 57. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 wherein said means for securing together the fanfolded layers of said strip of packaging material and said means for forming said folded strip into inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure are both heat sealing means.
- 58. Apparatus as set forth in claim 52 further including means for removing from a portion of one of the outer layers of said layered strip of packaging material its said thermoplastic heat sealing properties.
- 59. Apparatus for making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 52 wherein said means for forming said inner and outer portions of the resealable interlocking closure from said strip comprise in combination,
a) an upper heated male die and a lower heated mating female die, b) means for moving said strip between said dies, b) means for moving said dies toward one another into mating position and forming said strip into the recess of said female die, c) a pair of colinearly disposed forming plates and means for moving said plates toward one another and orthogonally to said male die for pressing the upper sides of the strip against the sides of said male die, d) means for retracting said male die out of said female die and out from between said forming plates, e) means for moving said forming plates further toward one another to pinch together the portion of the strip therebetween and form an arrowhead shape in the interfitted parts of the resealable closure, f) means for moving said female die toward said forming plates to move the rear surfaces of the arrowhead into a more planer alignment, rendering the arrowhead more triangular in shape, and g) means for retracting said forming plates and female die to their initial positions in preparation for forming the next closure.
- 60. Apparatus for making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 52 wherein said means for layering said web to form at least one strip of packaging material comprises means for fanfolding said web of packaging material to form said stack, and means for heat sealing said stack to form said strip.
- 61. Apparatus for making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package as set forth in claim 52 wherein said means for layering said web to form at least one strip of packaging material comprises means for heat sealing a strip of heat sealable material to the packaging film.
- 62. Apparatus for making a resealable interlocking closure for a resealable package, comprising in combination,
a) means for transporting in lengthwise direction a web of flexible packaging material of selected width and indeterminate length, b) means for fanfolding said web to form at least one stack of packaging material, c) means for securing together the fanfolded layers of said at least one stack of packaging material, e) means for forming inner and outer portions of a resealable interlocking closure, at least said interlocking closure inner portion being formed from said at least one stack of packaging material and for at least a part of its length being thinner in cross section than said interlocking closure outer portion.
