Claims
- 1. An improved shaft for use in a method for treating a body of molten aluminum using an impeller mounted on the shaft, the impeller suitable for dispersing a material selected from fluxing gas, solid particles and an immiscible liquid in the body of molten aluminum, the method including providing a body of molten aluminum having a surface and projecting an impeller on said shaft into said body through said surface, the improvement comprising:(a) a carbon or graphite shaft, generally circular in cross section; and (b) a refractory sleeve resistant to attack by molten aluminum fixedly cast around said shaft, the sleeve employing a reinforcing media, said sleeve positioned to extend above and below said surface when said shaft is projected into said body.
- 2. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said sleeve is comprised of a refractory selected from the group consisting of fused silica, mullite, SiAlON, silicon carbide, aluminum titinate and alumina.
- 3. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said sleeve is formed from fused silica.
- 4. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said reinforcing media is a continuous wire.
- 5. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said reinforcing media is a wire mesh.
- 6. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said reinforcing media is a wire mat.
- 7. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said reinforcing media is comprised of fibers dispersed in said refractory sleeve.
- 8. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said reinforcing media is comprised of a fibrous cloth embedded in said refractory sleeve.
- 9. The shaft in accordance with claim 8 wherein said fibrous cloth is selected from the group consisting of metallic or refractory material.
- 10. An improved shaft for use with a body of molten aluminum having a surface shaft comprising:(a) a carbon or graphite shaft, generally circular in cross section; and (b) a refractory sleeve resistant to attack by molten aluminum fixedly cast around said shaft, the sleeve employing a reinforcing media positioned to provide resistance to attack by molten aluminum at said surface when said shaft is projected into said body.
- 11. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said sleeve is comprised of a refractory selected from the group consisting of fused silica, mullite, SiAlON, silicon carbide, aluminum titinate and alumina.
- 12. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said sleeve is formed from fused silica.
- 13. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said reinforcing media is a continuous wire.
- 14. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said reinforcing media is a wire mesh.
- 15. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said reinforcing media is a wire mat.
- 16. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said reinforcing media is comprised of fibers dispersed in said refractory sleeve.
- 17. The shaft in accordance with claim 10 wherein said reinforcing media is comprised of a fibrous cloth embedded in said refractory sleeve.
- 18. The shaft in accordance with claim 17 wherein said fibrous cloth is selected from the group consisting of metallic or refractory material.
