Claims
- 1. A prefabricated reinforcement for asphaltic paving comprising:
- an open grid, preimpregnated with resin, comprising at least two sets of substantially parallel strands, each set of strands having openings between adjacent strands and the sets being oriented at a substantial angle to one another;
- a coating of stable adhesive being preapplied to the grid primarily for the purpose of being activated for forming a bond compatible with asphaltic paving; and
- the coating being preapplied to the underside of the impregnated strands of the lower surface of the grid without closing openings between the strands. PG,21
- 2. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the fibers are glass fibers.
- 3. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the strands of the grid are fixedly connected at their intersections before impregnation.
- 4. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive is activatable by the application of pressure.
- 5. The reinforcement of claim 4, in which the adhesive has a probe tack greater than about 700 gm/cm.sup.2.
- 6. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive is activatable by the application of heat.
- 7. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive has a peel strength which permits separation of one layer of reinforcement from another layer after storage without significant distortion of the grid.
- 8. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive has a cohesive strength which is greater than the adhesive strength of the adhesive.
- 9. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive retains significant shear strength between the ambient temperature at which it is installed and the temperature to which it is raised when asphaltic paving is applied to it.
- 10. The reinforcement of claim 9, in which the lowest ambient temperature is about 40.degree. F. and the highest exposure temperature is about 150.degree. F.
- 11. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive has a peel strength which resists peel in the "peel test" at 32.degree. F.
- 12. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive has a shear adhesion failure temperature greater than about 150.degree. F.
- 13. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive imparts to the reinforcement when placed on paving a shear strength greater than about 30 pounds per linear foot.
- 14. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the adhesive has a viscosity at 300.degree. F. of less than about 6000 centipoise.
- 15. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the openings in the grid range in size from 1/8 to six inches on a side.
- 16. The reinforcement of claim 1, wherein the adhesive coating is preapplied to a portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface.
- 17. The reinforcement of claim 16, wherein the portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface comprises about twenty to sixty percent of the surface area of the strands.
- 18. The reinforcement of claim 16, wherein the portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface comprises about twenty to fifty percent of the surface area of the strands.
- 19. The reinforcement of claim 1, wherein the grid has a strength of more than 25 kiloNewtons per meter in the direction of each set of strands.
- 20. The reinforcement of claim 1, in which the grid is non-woven.
- 21. The reinforcement of claim 20, in which intersections of the strands of the grid are fixedly connected by one of thermosetting and thermoplastic adhesives.
- 22. The reinforcement of claim 3, in which the intersections of the strands of the grid are fixedly connected during manufacture by warp-knit, weft-insertion.
- 23. A roll of prefabricated reinforcement for asphaltic paving comprising:
- an open grid, preimpregnated with resin, comprising at least two sets of substantially parallel strands of fibers, each set of strands having openings between adjacent strands and the sets being oriented at a substantial angle to one another;
- a coating of stable adhesive being preapplied to the grid primarily for the purpose of being activated for forming a bond compatible with asphaltic paving;
- the coating being preapplied to the underside of the impregnated strands of the lower surface of the grid without closing openings between the strands; and
- the grid being rolled into the form of a roll free of any release paper between adjacent layers of the grid.
- 24. The reinforcement of claim 23, wherein the adhesive coating is preapplied to a portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface.
- 25. The reinforcement of claim 24, wherein the portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface comprises about twenty to sixty percent of the surface area of the strands.
- 26. The reinforcement of claim 24, wherein the portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface comprises about thirty to fifty percent of the surface area of the strands.
- 27. The reinforcement roll of claim 23, in which intersections of the strands of the grid are fixedly connected during manufacture by warp-knit, weft-insertion.
- 28. The reinforcement roll of claim 27, in which the grid is non-woven.
- 29. The reinforcement roll of claim 28, in which intersections of the strands of the grid are fixedly connected by one of thermosetting and thermoplastic adhesives.
- 30. A process for reinforcing paving comprising:
- selecting an open grid comprising at least two sets of substantially parallel strands being resin-impregnated and having openings between adjacent strands and the sets being oriented at a substantial angle to one another;
- preapplying a coating of stable adhesive to the underside of the impregnated strands of the lower surface of the grid without closing openings between the strands, the adhesive coating being preapplied to the grid primarily for the purpose of being activated for forming a bond compatible with asphaltic paving;
- laying the grid, adhesive side down, to paving to be reinforced;
- activating the adhesive coating so that the activated coating provides binding force with the paving; and
- spreading a layer of asphaltic cement or concrete on top of the grid.
- 31. The process of claim 30, in which tack coat is applied to the paving to be reinforced only after the grid is laid on top of that paving.
- 32. The process of claim 30, in which the grid, before laying it on top of the paving, is rolled into the form of a roll free of any release paper between adjacent layers of the grid.
- 33. The process of claim 30, wherein the step of preapplying the adhesive coating comprises preapplying the adhesive to a portion of the underside of the impregnated strands of the grid lower surface.
- 34. The process of claim 33, wherein the step of preapplying the adhesive coating comprises preapplying the adhesive to about twenty to sixty percent of the surface area of the underside of the impregnated strands.
- 35. The process of claim 33, wherein the step of preapplying the adhesive coating comprises preapplying the adhesive to about thirty to fifty percent of the surface area of the underside of the impregnated strands.
- 36. The process of claim 30, wherein the sets of substantially parallel strands of the open grid comprises one set of fibers extending in a lengthwise direction and one set extending transversely to the lengthwise direction and wherein the step of laying the grid to the paving to be reinforced comprises orienting the grid such that the lengthwise set of substantially parallel strands is parallel to the paving to be reinforced and the set extending transversely to the lengthwise direction extends transversely to the paving to be reinforced.
- 37. The process of claim 30, in which tack coat is applied to the paving to be reinforced before the grid is laid on top of that paving.
- 38. The process of claim 30, in which the activated adhesive provides binding force with the paving to prevent movement caused by external forces during installation.
- 39. The process of claim 30, in which intersections of strands of the grid are fixedly connected during manufacture by warp-knit, weft-insertion.
- 40. The process of claim 30, in which the grid is non-woven.
- 41. The process of claim 40, in which intersections of strands of the grid are fixedly connected by one of thermosetting and thermoplastic adhesives.
- 42. The process of claim 30, wherein the grid has a strength of more than 25 kiloNewtons per meter i the direction of each set of strands.
