Claims
- 1. A method of using a relational database that comprises unit information, parts information and location information lookup tables and unit storage tables for retrieving information on a unit of manufacture, including part information and location information; anda pair of configuration management storage tables, wherein said pair of configuration management storage tables are linked together, one of said configuration management storage tables of said pair of linked configuration management storage tables being a configuration management status table and the other being a configuration management memo table; comprising: (a) accessing unit information in one or more of said relational database unit lookup tables and unit storage tables that store unit information useful for the manufacture of, to interconnect nodes in, to repair or to maintain said unit, wherein access to store or retrieve said unit information is through either one or more index keys specific to each of said unit lookup and storage tables or through another lookup table or another storage table of said relational database; (b) accessing parts information, which does not include information that locates said parts in said unit, in one or more of said parts lookup tables that store parts information related to the parts used to manufacture, to interconnect nodes in, to repair or to maintain said unit, wherein access to store or retrieve said parts information is through either one or more index keys specific to each of said parts lookup tables or through another lookup table of said relational database; (c) accessing part location information in one or more location lookup tables, that does store location information related to the location of parts in said unit, which is used to manufacture, to interconnect nodes in, to repair or to maintain said unit, wherein access to store or retrieve said location information is through either one or more index keys specific to each of said location lookup tables or through another lookup table of said relational database; and (d) accessing said unit, said parts and said location lookup tables to store or retrieve information so as to associate part information with unit information for a particular unit configuration, and to associate location information with unit information for said particular unit configuration, and (e) accessing both of said linked configuration management storage tables by using a first index key, which defines a group of configuration management records for a part definition, location definition or unit definition, and a second configuration management index key, which defines the current configuration management records for a part definition, location definition, or unit location.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 further comprising using said unit information in conjunction with database testing information to test said unit.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1 further comprising using said unit information in conjunction with database manufacturing process information to manufacture said unit.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said unit information incorporates configuration information for a plurality of unit configurations and said parts information incorporates part configuration parameter definition and description information for said plurality of unit configurations and parts list information which are linked through one or more lookup tables of said relational database to said part configuration parameter definition information.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said unit comprises electronic equipment and said parts information incorporates part definition information that includes interface definition information, and said unit information incorporates a list of interconnection definitions associated with said interface definition information.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a part type lookup table comprising accessing part type information from said part type lookup table by using an identification part type index key, which is a unique key for each part type.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a parts list lookup table comprising accessing part list information from said part list lookup table by using an identification part index key, which is a unique key for each part.
- 8. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is an interface definition lockup table comprising accessing interface definition information from said interface definition lookup table that associates interfaces with parts by using an interface index key, which is unique for each interface.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is an interface family lookup table comprising accessing interface family information from said interface family lookup table by using an identification family index key that is unique for each interface family.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said unit comprises electronic equipment which includes cables that are tagged and one of said parts information lookup tables is a tag definition lookup table comprising accessing tag definition information from said tag definition lookup table by using an identification tag index key, which is unique for each cable tag employed in an interface family.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information look up tables is a parameter list lookup table comprising accessing parameter list information from said parameter list lookup table by using an identification parameter index key, which is unique for each parameter.
- 12. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a parameter group lookup table comprising accessing parameter group information from said parameter group lookup table by using an identification parameter group index key, which is unique for each parameter group.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 7 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a parameter description lookup table comprising accessing parameter description information from said parameter description lookup table by using an identification part index key, which is provided by said parts list lookup table to supply a unique link to correlate a parameter set to a part.
- 14. A method as claimed in claim 13 in which said parts parameter description lookup table supports a plurality of configuration parameter sets comprising accessing parameter description information from said parameter description lookup table by using an identification part configuration number index key, which identifies a unique set of configuration parameters.
- 15. A method as claimed in claim 7 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a parameter definition lookup table comprising accessing parameter definition information from said parameter definition lookup table by using an identification part type index key, which is provided by said parts list lookup table to correlate a parameter set to a part.
- 16. A method as claimed in claim 14 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a parameter definition lookup table comprising accessing parameter definition information from said parameter definition lookup table by using an identification part configuration number index key, which is provided by said parameter description lookup table to identify a unique set of configuration parameters.
- 17. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said parts information lookup tables is a parameter definition lookup table, comprising accessing parameter definition information from said parameter definition lookup table by using an identification parameter index key, which is unique for each parameter.
- 18. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said location lookup tables is an equipment type lookup table comprising accessing equipment type information from said equipment type lookup table by using an identification equipment type index key, which is unique to an equipment type.
- 19. A method as claimed in claim 18 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a location description lookup table comprising accessing equipment description information from said equipment description lookup table by using an identification equipment type index key, which is provided by said equipment type lookup table to define an equipment type that is associated with a location description.
- 20. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a location description lookup table comprising accessing location description information from said location description lookup table by using an equipment configuration number index key, which uniquely identifies a set of location definitions.
- 21. A method as claimed in claim 18 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a location definition lookup table comprising accessing location definition information from said lookup table by using an identification equipment type index key, which is provided by said equipment type lookup table to define an equipment type that is associated with a location definition.
- 22. A method as claimed in claim 20 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a location definition lookup table comprising accessing location definition information from said location definition lookup table by using an equipment configuration number index key, which is provided by said location description lookup table to identify a set of location definitions.
- 23. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a location definition lookup table comprising accessing location definition information from said location definition lookup table by using a reference designator index key, which is unique to a location in a unit.
- 24. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a part family description lookup table comprising accessing part family description information from said part family description lookup table by using an identification part family index key, which is unique to a part family.
- 25. A method as claimed in claim 24 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a part family definition lookup table comprising accessing part family definition information from said part family definition lookup table by using an identification part family index key, which is provided by said part family description lookup table to define a part family for a list of parts.
- 26. A method as claimed in claim 7 in which one of said location information lookup tables is a part family definition lookup table comprising accessing part family definition information from said part family definition lookup table by using an identification part index key, which is provided by said parts list lookup table to define a list of parts in a part family.
- 27. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said relational database comprises a unit equipment information storage table comprising accessing unit equipment information from said unit equipment information storage table by using an identification unit equipment index key, which is unique to a unit.
- 28. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said relational database comprises a unit parts list information storage table comprising accessing unit parts list information from said unit parts list information storage table by using an identification unit parts list index key, which is a unique part of a specific unit.
- 29. A method as claimed in claim 28 in which said relational database comprises a unit parameter information storage table, comprising accessing unit parameter information from said unit parameter information storage table by using an identification unit parts list index key which is provided by said unit parts list information storage table to uniquely identify a part of a specific unit.
- 30. A method as claimed in claim 11 in which said relational database comprises a unit parameter information storage table, comprising accessing unit parameter information from said unit parameter information storage table by using an identification parameter index key, which is provided by said parameter list lookup table to define parameters.
- 31. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said relational database comprises a unit connect information storage table, comprising accessing unit connect information from said unit connect information storage table by using an identification unit connect index key, which identifies interconnections within a unit.
- 32. A method as claimed in claim 27 in which said relational database comprises a unit processor group information storage table, comprising accessing unit processor group information from said unit processor group information storage table by using an identification unit equipment index key, which is provided by said unit equipment information storage table to group connections within a unit.
- 33. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which said unit comprises electronic equipment and said relational database comprises a unit processor group information storage table, comprising accessing unit processor group information from said unit processor group information storage table by using a processor group index key, which is provided and which provides a sequential number for each processor group within a unit.
- 34. A method as claimed in claim 33 in which said unit comprises electronic equipment and one of said unit lookup tables is a processor operating system lookup table, comprising accessing processor operating system information from said processor operating system lookup table by using an operating system index key, which is unique to the operating system used in the unit.
- 35. A method of assembling information contained in a relational database concerning a plurality of units, each of which may exist in different configurations from which reports may be generated, wherein said database comprises a parts list lookup table that contains parts list information, at least one additional first lookup table that contains configuration parameters information for a plurality of different configurations of said units, and a unit parts list storage table that contains reference descriptor locations information for said parts comprising accessing said parts list information, configuration parameter information and reference descriptor locations information from the respective table and, a pair of configuration management storage table, wherein said pair of configuration management storage tables are linked together, one of said configuration management storage tables of said pair of linked configuration management storage tables being a configuration management status table and the other being a configuration management memo table comprising;accessing both of said linked configuration management storage tables by using a first index key, which defines a group of configuration management records for a part definition, location definition or unit definition, and a second configuration management index key which defines the current configuration management records for a part definition, location definition, or unit location; and accessing said parts list information, configuration parameter information and reference descriptor locations information from the respective table, and assembling all of said information so that a report on such information may be generated for one or more of said units.
- 36. A method as claimed in claim 35 wherein said relational database further comprises a unit connect storage table that contains interconnection information comprising accessing said interconnection information and assembling said interconnection information for said report.
- 37. A method as claimed in claim 36 wherein said relational database comprises at least one lookup table that contains cable tag information comprising accessing said cable tag information and assembling said cable tag information for said report.
- 38. A method as claimed in claim 35 wherein said unit are electronic equipment units comprising assembling functional block diagrams of said units that are stored in digital memory for said report.
- 39. A method as claimed in claim 35 comprising assembling location definition illustrations for said units that are stored in digital memory for said report.
- 40. A method as claimed in claim 35 comprising assembling part illustrations definition illustrations for said units that are stored in digital memory list for said report.
- 41. A method as claimed in claim 35 wherein said unit is electronic equipment units and said relational database comprises at least one additional second lookup table that contains processor group information comprising accessing said processor group information, and assembling said processor group information for said report.
