- 6. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory alloy fiber comprises a nickel-titanium based alloy, an indium-titanium based alloy, a nickel-aluminum based alloy, a copper based alloy, a gold-cadmium based alloy, an iron-platinum based alloys, or an iron-palladium based alloys.
- 7. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory polymer comprises polyphosphazenes, poly(vinyl alcohols), polyamides, polyester amides, poly(amino acid)s, polyanhydrides, polycarbonates, polyacrylates, polyalkylenes, polyacrylamides, polyalkylene glycols, polyalkylene oxides, polyalkylene terephthalates, polyortho esters, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl esters, polyvinyl halides, polyesters, polylactides, polyglycolides, polysiloxanes, polyurethanes, polyethers, polyether amides, polyether esters, or copolymers thereof.
- 8. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory alloy comprises a composition selected to exhibit an austenite phase at an environmental temperature in which the fastener system is disposed and a martensite phase at about a temperature lower than the environmental temperature in which the fastener system.
- 9. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory alloy comprises a composition selected to exhibit a martensite phase at an environmental temperature in which the fastener system is disposed and an austentite phase at a temperature greater than the environmental temperature.
- 10. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory polymer comprises a first permanent shape and a second permanent shape in equilibrium with one another; and wherein the first permanent shape comprises a shape orientation of the plurality of hook elements in an inverted J-shaped orientation and the second permanent shape comprises a shape orientation of the plurality of hook elements in a substantially straightened shape orientation.
- 11. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory alloy comprises a composition having a one-way shape memory effect.
- 12. The releasable fastener system of claim 5, wherein the shape memory alloy comprises a composition having a two-way shape memory effect.
- 13. A process for operating a releasable fastener system, the process comprising:
contacting a loop portion with a hook portion to form a releasable engagement, wherein the loop portion comprises a support and a loop material disposed on a surface thereon, and wherein the hook portion comprises a support and a plurality of hook elements attached to the support, wherein the plurality of hook elements comprises a first portion fabricated from a shape memory material and at least one additional portion fabricated from a different shape memory material; maintaining constant shear and pull-off forces in the releasable engagement without introducing an activation signal; selectively introducing a first activation signal to the plurality of hook elements, wherein the first activation signal is effective to change a shape orientation, a flexural modulus property, or a combination thereof to the first portion of the plurality of hook elements to reduce the shear and/or pull off forces in the releasable engagement; and selectively introducing an additional activation signal to the plurality of hook elements, wherein the additional activation signal is effective to change a shape orientation, a flexural modulus property, or a combination thereof to the second portion of the plurality of hook elements to further reduce the shear and/or pull off forces in the releasable engagement.
- 14. The process according to claim 13, wherein the shape memory material comprises a shape memory alloy, a shape memory polymer, a composite, or combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing shape memory materials.
- 15. The process according to claim 13, wherein the first portion and the at least one additional portion of the plurality of hook elements are randomly distributed about a surface of the hook support.
- 16. A hook portion for a releasable fastener system comprising:
a support; and a plurality of hook elements attached to the support, wherein the plurality of hook elements fabricated from a shape memory material and at least one additional portion of the plurality of hook elements fabricated from a different shape memory material, and wherein the plurality of hook elements are adapted to change a shape orientation, a flexural modulus property, or a combination thereof, upon receipt of an activation signal, wherein the first portion has a different activation signal than the at least one additional portion.
- 17. The hook portion of claim 16, wherein the shape memory material and the different shape memory material are selected from the group consisting of a shape memory alloy, a shape memory polymer, a composite, or combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing shape memory materials.
