Claims
- 1. A release device for releasing vapor of sprout inhibitor into a quantity of potatoes during shipment or storage comprising:
- a quantity of porous media containing a volatile potato sprout inhibitor; containment means for said porous media, said containment means being at least partially porous
- to the vapor of said sprout inhibitor; and
- a removable of breachable seal means structured to seal at least the porous portion of said
- containment means to prevent loss of sprout inhibitor vapor while said seal is in a sealing position; said seal material being structured to be hand-breachable.
- 2. The release device of claim 1, wherein said porous media is a fine, particulate inorganic material.
- 3. The release device of claim 2, wherein said particulate material is silica gel.
- 4. The release device of claim 1, wherein said sprout inhibitor is one which is liquid at room temperature.
- 5. The release device of claim 4, wherein said sprout inhibitor is an isomer of dimethyl naphthalene (DMN).
- 6. The release device of claim 5, wherein said sprout inhibitor is 1,4-DMN.
- 7. The release device of claim 2, wherein said media is substantially saturated with a liquid sprout inhibitor.
- 8. The release device of claim 2, wherein the porosity of said containment means is provided by small pores which are smaller than the smallest particulate inorganic material present in said containment means.
- 9. The release device of claim 8, wherein the said containment means is a paper container.
- 10. The release device of claim 9, wherein the said paper is vapor permeable.
- 11. The release device of claim 2, wherein said containment means is a fabric envelope.
- 12. The release device of claim 1, wherein said seal means is a vapor impermeable envelope.
- 13. The release device of claim 1, wherein said containment means is a small substantially vapor-impermeable cylindrical paper canister having a bottom member which is substantially vapor-impermeable.
