Claims
- 1. A sealing system, comprising:
- first apparatus having a projecting structure;
- second apparatus having a bore therein, said bore being of sufficient size to telescopically receive said projecting structure therein;
- seal means for substantially simultaneously forming metal-to-metal seals with said projecting structure and said bore, said seal means including a metal seal gasket; and
- actuation means responsive to the telescopic insertion of said structure into said bore for actuating said seal means, said actuation means including deformation means for forcing said metal seal gasket to deform and form said metal-to-metal seals and reciprocating means for actuating said deformation means.
- 2. A sealing system, comprising:
- first apparatus having a projecting structure;
- second apparatus having a bore therein, said bore being of sufficient size to telescopically receive said projecting structure therein;
- seal means for substantially simultaneously forming metal-to-metal seals with said projecting structure and said bore; and
- actuation means responsive to the telescopic insertion of said structure into said bore for actuating said seal means;
- said seal means including a frustoconical shaped metal ring gasket circumferentially surrounding said projecting structure, said metal gasket being in metal-to-metal sealing engagement with said bore and said projecting structure and having a hardness softer than the material of the portions of said projecting structure and said bore at the location of said metal-to-metal seals;
- said actuation means including deformation means for forcing said frustoconical shaped metal ring gasket to deform and form said metal-to-metal seals; and
- reciprocating means for actuating said deformation means.
- 3. A sealing system for a well, comprising:
- first apparatus having a projecting structure lowered into the well;
- second apparatus disposed within the well having a first bore therein, said bore being of sufficient size to telescopically receive said projecting structure therein upon the downward movement of said first apparatus;
- a first seal means retained on the end of said first projecting structure for forming metal-to-metal seals with said projecting structure and said bore; and
- a first actuation means reciprocably disposed on said first projecting structure and responsive to the downward telescopic insertion of said first projecting structure into said first bore for actuating said first seal means;
- said first apparatus having a second projecting structure having an axis substantially parallel to said first projecting structure;
- said second apparatus having a second bore having an axis substantially parallel to the axis of said first bore;
- a second seal means retained on the end of said second projecting structure for forming metal-to-metal seals with said second projecting structure and said second bore; and
- a second actuation means reciprocably disposed on said second projecting structure and responsive to the downward telescopic insertion of said second projecting structure into said second bore for actuating said second seal means;
- said first and second actuation means actuating both of said seal means as said first projecting structure and said second projecting structure are substantially simultaneously telescopically received in said first bore and said second bore respectively.
- 4. A sealing assembly for sealingly engaging the cylindrical wall of a continuous bore of a pipe hanger suspending pipe within a well without directly attaching the sealing assembly to the pipe hanger, comprising:
- a pipe having one end received within the continuous pipe hanger bore, said pipe having a reduced diameter portion at said end,
- an annular shoulder disposed on said reduced diameter portion,
- an annular ring slidably disposed around said reduced diameter portion, said ring and shoulder having first frusto-conical surfaces tapering in the same direction,
- an annular frusto-conical metal gasket having second frusto-conical surfaces, said gasket being disposed on said reduced diameter portion between said first frusto-conical surfaces and tapering in the same direction as said first frusto-conical surfaces but having a smaller cone angle than said first frusto-conical surfaces,
- said annular ring being movable from a nonsealing position to a sealing position, said ring in said sealing position deforming said gasket to conform the cone angle of said second frusto-conical surfaces to the cone angle of said first frusto-conical surfaces and causing said first and second surfaces to engage and said gasket to sealingly engage the continuous pipe hanger bore wall and said reduced diameter portion, and
- means for applying force to said annular ring to move said annular ring to said sealing position.
- 5. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 4 wherein said gasket has inner and outer circumferential edges and in said sealing position has an interference fit with the pipe hanger bore wall and said reduced diameter portion.
- 6. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 4 wherein said gasket in said nonsealing position has a larger inner diameter than said reduced diameter portion and a smaller outer diameter than the diameter of the continuous pipe hanger bore.
- 7. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 4 wherein said annular shoulder is on an annular member disposed on said reduced diameter portion.
- 8. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 4, and including means for retaining said gasket on said reduced diameter portion.
- 9. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 4 wherein said annular shoulder, gasket, and annular ring are received within the continuous pipe hanger bore.
- 10. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 4, wherein said means includes an actuator ring disposed on said reduced diameter portion responsive to said force for urging said annular ring into said sealing position, said actuator ring being received within the continuous pipe hanger bore in said sealing position.
- 11. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 10, wherein said means for moving said actuator ring is actuated from a remote location.
- 12. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 10 wherein said actuator ring cammingly engages the entrance to the continuous pipe hanger bore wall.
- 13. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 12 wherein said actuator ring is deformed upon engagement with the entrance of the continuous pipe hanger bore wall.
- 14. A sealing assembly for a wellhead, comprising:
- a pipe hanger supported by the wellhead for suspending pipe within the well, said pipe hanger having at least one continuous bore with a substantially vertical cylindrical wall, said continuous bore having an inwardly tapered annular surface at the entrance thereof,
- a pipe having a substantially vertical outer cylindrical wall received and disconnected within said bore with at least a portion of the outer diameter of said pipe being smaller than the diameter of said bore, said annular surface guiding said pipe into said continuous bore,
- said pipe hanger and pipe having an annular space therebetween formed by an annular shoulder and an annular ring adjacent a portion of said smaller diameter portion of said pipe, said shoulder and ring having first frusto-conical surfaces tapering in the same direction,
- an annular frusto-conical metal gasket having second frusto-conical surfaces, said gasket being disposed between said first frusto-conical surfaces and tapering in the same direction as said first frusto-conical surfaces but having a smaller cone angle than said first frusto-conical surfaces,
- said annular ring being movable from a nonsealing position to a sealing position, said ring in said sealing position deforming said gasket to conform the cone angle of said second frusto-conical surfaces to the cone angle of said first frusto-conical surfaces and causing said first and second surfaces to engage and said gasket to sealing engage the pipe hanger bore wall and said reduced diameter portion, and
- means for applying a force to said annular ring to move said annular ring from said nonsealing position to said sealing position.
- 15. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 14 wherein said annular shoulder is on an annular member disposed in said annular space.
- 16. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 14 and including means for retaining said gasket in said annular space.
- 17. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 14, wherein said means includes an actuator ring disposed in said annular space responsive to said force for urging said annular ring into said sealing position.
- 18. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 14, wherein said means for moving said actuator ring is actuated from a remote location.
- 19. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 14 wherein the diameter of said actuator ring is changed upon actuation by said means.
- 20. A sealing assembly for sealingly engaging the continuous cylindrical wall of a bore within a pipe hanger suspending tubing, comprising:
- a well pipe having one end received within the continuous pipe hanger bore, said well pipe having a reduced diameter portion at said end,
- an annular shoulder on said reduced diameter portion,
- an annular ring slidably disposed on said reduced diameter portion, said ring and shoulder having first frusto-conical surfaces tapering in the same direction,
- an annular frusto-conical metal gasket having second frusto-conical surfaces, said gasket being disposed on said reduced diameter portion between said first frusto-conical surfaces and tapering in the same direction as said first frusto-conical surfaces but having a smaller cone angle than said first frusto-conical surfaces,
- said annular ring being movable from a nonsealing position to a sealing position, said ring in said sealing position deforming said gasket to conform the cone angle of said second frusto-conical surfaces to the cone angle of said first frusto-conical surfaces and causing said first and second surfaces to engage and said gasket to sealingly engage the continuous pipe hanger bore wall and said reduced diameter portion,
- said gasket in said nonsealing position having a larger inner diameter than the outer diameter of said reduced diameter portion and a smaller outer diameter than the diameter of the pipe hanger bore,
- said annular shoulder, gasket, and annular ring having an outer diameter small enough to be received within the pipe hanger bore,
- an actuator ring disposed on said reduced diameter portion responsive to a force for urging said annular ring into said sealing position,
- means for applying a force to said actuator ring from a remote location,
- said actuator ring slidingly engaging the continuous pipe hanger bore wall upon urging said annular ring into said sealing position.
- 21. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 20 wherein said gasket has inner and outer circumferential edges and in said sealing position has an interference fit with the continuous pipe hanger bore wall and said reduced diameter portion.
- 22. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 20 wherein said annular shoulder is on an annular member disposed on said reduced diameter portion.
- 23. The sealing assembly as defined by claim 20, and including means for retaining said gasket on said reduced diameter portion.
- 24. A well apparatus for a well comprising:
- a tubular member disposed in the well having a flow bore in flow communication with pipe suspended in the well and an enlarged bore at the upper end of said flow bore, said enlarged bore having an inwardly tapered annular mouth with the remainder of said enlarged bore having a continuous common diameter;
- a pipe having an end with an outer diameter slidably received by said continuous enlarged bore, said pipe end having a reduced diameter portion forming a downwardly facing annular shoulder, said pipe being unconnected to said tubular member;
- a seal assembly disposed on said reduced diameter portion and having an outer diameter adapted to be received by said enlarged bore, said seal assembly including an annular member, an annular ring and at least one annular frusto-conical metal gasket;
- said annular member and annular ring having first frusto-conical surfaces tapering in the same direction;
- said annular frusto-conical metal gasket having second frusto-conical surfaces, said gasket being disposed between said first frusto-conical surfaces and tapering in the same direction as said first frusto-conical surfaces but having a smaller cone angle than said first frusto-conical surfaces;
- retainer means releasably connected to said reduced diameter portion for retaining said seal assembly on said reduced diameter portion;
- said annular ring being movable from a nonsealing position to a sealing position;
- actuator means disposed within said enlarged bore for applying a force to said annular ring for moving said annular ring from the nonsealing position to the sealing position;
- means for applying a force to said actuator means from a remote location to actuate said actuator means;
- said annular ring in said sealing position compressing said gasket to cause said first and second surfaces to engage and conform the cone angle of said gasket to the cone angle of said first frusto-conical surfaces whereby the inner and outer circumferential edges of said gasket sealingly engage said tubular member and said pipe.
