- field programming means for providing programming periods for storing new access authorization codes in said memory means only during a said programming period, said field programming means being operative to automatically clear all of the old access authorization codes from said memory means during said programming period when a new access authorization code is stored, whereby, at the conclusion of said programming period, said memory means contains only those said access authorization codes which were presented during said programming period.
- 2. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said field programming means clears all of the old access authorization codes from said memory means when the first new access authorization code is stored in said memory means.
- 3. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said field programming means comprises means for storing in said memory means access authorization codes corresponding to access request signals received by said receiving means during said programming period.
- 4. Apparatus as set forth in claim 3, wherein during said programming period, said field programming means does not clear all of the old access authorization codes from said memory means until said receiving means receives at least one new access request signal.
- 5. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said means for evaluating comprises means for comparing at least a part of said received access request signal against each said access authorization code stored in said memory means.
- 6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said access request signals contain access codes and said access authorization codes are specific said access codes.
- 7. Apparatus as set forth in claim 6, wherein said means for evaluating comprises means for comparing the access code contained in a received access request signal with each said access authorization code stored in said memory means and for allowing access to said vehicle when said access code contained in said received signal is the same as one of said access codes stored in said memory means.
- 8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said field programming means includes means for providing programming periods of fixed duration.
- 9. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said field programming means includes a switch manually operable to initiate a said programming period.
- 10. Apparatus as set forth in claim 9, wherein said field programming means responds to manual operation of said switch to initiate a said programming period having a fixed duration.
- 11. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said receiver means includes vehicle door control means for controlling operation of the doors of said vehicle and wherein said means for evaluating controls operation of said vehicle door control means in accordance with said evaluation.
- 12. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11, wherein said vehicle door control means comprises means for controlling the locking and unlocking of at least one of said vehicle doors.
- 13. Apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said access request signals are communicated to said apparatus in the form of modulated radio frequency signals and wherein said receiver means comprises means for receiving a radio frequency signal and for extracting said access request signals therefrom.
- 14. A receiver for use in a remote control system which includes a plurality of transmitters that each transmit a coded signal, said receiver being operable to generate a control signal for effecting performance of a function, comprising
- a memory including a plurality of registers for storing security codes,
- a comparator for comparing a received coded signal with the security code stored in each register and to generate said control signal upon detecting a code match, and
- field programming means operable to initiate field programming periods, including means for automatically erasing the security code stored in each receiver memory register upon receipt of a coded signal from a first transmitter during a field programming period, for storing a security code derived from said coded signal in the first register, and for storing a security code derived from a subsequent coded signal received from a different transmitter in the sequentially next register, such operation being subsequently repeatable by the receipt of coded signals from other different transmitters, only during said field programming period, so that each of the plurality of registers may contain a different security code.
- 15. A receiver for use in a remote control system which includes a plurality of transmitters that each transmits multi-part radio frequency signals of binary bits comprising a function part and a security code part, said receiver being operable to generate control signals for effecting performance of different vehicle functions, comprising
- a power circuit,
- a memory including a plurality of sequential registers for storing security codes of binary bits,
- a comparator operable upon activation of the power circuit to compare the security code part of a received signal with the security code stored in each register and to generate the control signal indicated by the function part of the received signal upon detecting a match of the received signal code part with any stored security code, and
- field programming means operable to initiate field programming periods of predetermined length during which the security code stored in each receiver memory register is automatically erased and is replaced in the first register by the security code part of a signal received from a first transmitter during said period, and is replaced in the sequentially next register by the security code part of a subsequent signal received from a different transmitter during said period, such operation being subsequently repeatable upon receipt of signals from other different transmitters, only during said field programming period, so that each of the plurality of registers may contain a different security code.
- 16. The receiver of claim 15, wherein the transmitted signals received by the receiver further include a wake-up part, and the receiver includes detector means for recognizing the wake-up part of a received signal to activate the power circuit, and means for deactivating the power circuit after a predetermined period of time.
