Claims
- 1. In a digital transmission line element defining a status and being interconnected to an incoming digital transmission span and an outgoing digital transmission span, said line element receiving an incoming stream of data along said incoming digital transmission span, a remote reporting method comprising, in combination:
- passing an outgoing stream of data along said outgoing digital transmission span;
- detecting a status inquiry; and
- introducing a predetermined number of bit errors into said outgoing stream of data in response to said status inquiry, said predetermined number defining a message that indicates the status of said line element,
- whereby a device located remotely from said line element may count said number of bit errors to facilitate a determination of said status.
- 2. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said status comprises a location of said line element.
- 3. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said status comprises an address of said line element.
- 4. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said status comprises a transmission mode of said line element.
- 5. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said status comprises a loopback mode of said line element.
- 6. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said number indicates that said line element is able to enter loopback.
- 7. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said number indicates that said line element is in loopback.
- 8. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein introducing a predetermined number of bit errors into said outgoing stream of data comprises introducing a burst of bit errors into said outgoing stream.
- 9. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said bit errors comprise logic bit errors.
- 10. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein introducing a number of bit errors into said outgoing stream of data comprises periodically introducing a burst of bit errors into said outgoing stream.
- 11. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said outgoing stream of data substantially follows bipolar coding rules, and at least a plurality of said bit errors comprise violations of said bipolar coding rules.
- 12. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said outgoing stream of data periodically includes a framing bit to distinguish groupings in said stream of data, said method further including inhibiting introduction of said bit errors on said framing bit.
- 13. A method for a transmission line element to transmit status data to a remote location, said transmission line element being interconnected to an incoming digital transmission span and an outgoing digital transmission span, said incoming digital transmission span carrying an incoming stream of data, said method comprising, in combination:
- passing an outgoing stream of data along said outgoing digital transmission span, said outgoing stream of data periodically including a framing bit to distinguish groupings in said outgoing stream of data;
- detecting a status inquiry in said incoming stream of data;
- responsively introducing a number of bit errors into said outgoing stream of data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line, said number of bit errors corresponding to status data; and
- inhibiting introduction of said bit errors where said framing bit is included in said outgoing stream of data.
- 14. In a digital transmission line element, said line element defining a status and being interconnected to digital transmission lines, said digital transmission lines carrying at least one stream of data, a remote reporting system comprising, in combination:
- a detector for sensing a status inquiry and responsively producing an initiation signal; and
- an error generator for receiving said initiation signal and responsively introducing a number of bit errors into said stream of data, said number corresponding to said status, whereby a remotely located device may count said number of bit errors to facilitate a determination of said status.
- 15. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said status comprises a location of said line element.
- 16. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said status comprises an address of said line element.
- 17. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said status comprises a transmission mode of said line element.
- 18. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said status comprises a loopback mode of said line element.
- 19. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said number indicates that said line element is able to enter loopback.
- 20. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said number indicates that said line element is in loopback.
- 21. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein responsively introducing a number of bit errors into said stream of data comprises introducing a burst of bit errors into said stream.
- 22. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein responsively introducing a number of bit errors into said stream of data comprises periodically introducing a burst of bit errors into said stream.
- 23. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said stream of data substantially follows bipolar coding rules, and at least a plurality of said bit errors comprise violations of said bipolar coding rules.
- 24. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 14, wherein said stream of data periodically includes a framing bit to distinguish groupings in said stream of data, said remote reporting system further comprising inhibition means for inhibiting introduction of said bit errors on said framing bit.
- 25. In a digital transmission line element defining a status and being operable to receive an incoming stream of data and to provide an outgoing stream of data, a method of reporting the status to a remote location comprising, in combination:
- sensing a status inquiry in the incoming stream of data; and
- responsive to the status inquiry, introducing a number of bit errors in the outgoing stream of data, the number corresponding to the status,
- whereby a remotely located device may count the number of bit errors to facilitate a determination of the status.
- 26. In a digital transmission line element defining a status, a remote reporting system comprising, in combination:
- a detector for sensing a status inquiry in an incoming stream of data and responsively producing an initiation signal; and
- an error generator for receiving the initiation signal and responsively introducing a number of bit errors into an outgoing stream of data, the number corresponding to the status,
- whereby a remotely located device may count the number of bit errors to facilitate a determination of the status.
- 27. In a digital transmission line element having a loop back mode in which the digital transmission line element receives a data stream carried by an incoming transmission line from a remote location and loops the data stream back along an outgoing transmission line to the remote location, a remote reporting method comprising, in combination:
- detecting a query code in the data stream carried by the incoming transmission line; and
- responsive to the query code, introducing a number of bit errors into the data stream being looped back along the outgoing transmission line, the number corresponding to a status of the digital transmission line element,
- whereby the number of bit errors may be counted at the remote location to facilitate a determination of the status of the digital transmission line element.
- 28. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the digital transmission line element is a repeater.
- 29. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the status comprises an identification of the digital transmission line element.
- 30. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the status comprises a location of the digital transmission line element.
- 31. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the status comprises an operating mode of the digital transmission line element.
- 32. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the status comprises a loopback mode of the digital transmission line element.
- 33. A remote reporting method as claimed in claim 27, wherein introducing a number of bit errors into the data stream looped back comprises introducing at least one burst of bit errors into the data stream looped back.
- 34. In a digital transmission line element having a loop back mode in which the digital transmission line element receives a data stream carried by an incoming tranmission line from a remote location and loops the data stream back along an outgoing transmission line to the remote location, a remote reporting system comprising, in combination:
- a detector for sensing a query code in the data stream carried by the incoming transmission line and responsively producing an initiation signal; and
- an error generator for receiving the initiation signal and responsively introducing a number of bit errors into the data stream being looped back along the outgoing transmission line, the number corresponding to a status of the digital transmission line element,
- whereby the number of bit errors may be counted at the remote location to facilitate a determination of the status of the digital transmission line element.
- 35. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 34, wherein the digital transmission line element is a repeater.
- 36. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 34, wherein the status comprises an identification of the digital transmission line element.
- 37. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 34, wherein the status comprises a location of the digital transmission line element.
- 38. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 34, wherein the status comprises an operating mode of the digital transmission line element.
- 39. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 34, wherein the status comprises a loopback mode of the digital transmission line element.
- 40. A remote reporting system as claimed in claim 34, wherein introducing a number of bit errors into the data stream looped back comprises introducing at least one burst of bit errors into the data stream looped back.
