Claims
- 1. A line element interconnected to an incoming digital transmission line and to an outgoing digital transmission line, said incoming digital transmission line carrying an incoming stream of coded, payload data substantially following bipolar coding rules and said line element defining a status and comprising, in combination:
- a build-out circuit for receiving said incoming stream of coded, payload data along said incoming digital transmission line and producing an outgoing stream of coded, payload data along said outgoing digital transmission line;
- a detector for sensing an inquiry signal in said incoming stream of coded, payload data stream and responsively providing an initiation signal; and
- an error generator for receiving said initiation signal and responsively introducing an error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line, said error message corresponding to said status and comprising a burst of violations of said bipolar coding rules.
- 2. A line element as claimed in claim 1, wherein said status comprises a transmission mode.
- 3. A line element as claimed in claim 1, wherein said status comprises a loopback condition.
- 4. A line element interconnected to an incoming digital transmission line and to an outgoing digital transmission line, said incoming digital transmission line carrying an incoming stream of coded, payload data, said incoming stream of coded, payload data periodically including a framing bit to distinguish groupings in said incoming stream of coded, payload data, and said line element defining a status, said line element comprising, in combination:
- a build-out circuit for receiving said incoming stream of coded, payload data along said incoming digital transmission line and producing an outgoing stream of coded, payload data along said outgoing digital transmission line, said build-out circuit responsively producing a framing bit along said outgoing transmission line;
- a detector for sensing an inquiry signal in said incoming stream of coded, payload data stream and responsively providing an initiation signal;
- an error generator for receiving said initiation signal and responsively introducing an error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line, said error message corresponding to said status; and
- inhibit means, interconnected to said error generator, for preventing said error generator from introducing said error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data while said build-out circuit is producing a framing bit along said outgoing transmission line.
- 5. A line element as claimed in claim 4, wherein said status comprises a transmission mode.
- 6. A line element as claimed in claim 4, wherein said status comprises a loopback condition.
- 7. A line element as claimed in claim 4, wherein said error message comprises logic errors.
- 8. A line element as claimed in claim 4, further comprising, in combination:
- a command generator for issuing a command signal corresponding to a predetermined number of errors to be introduced into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data; and
- a parallel counter for receiving said command signal and enabling said error generator to introduce only said predetermined number of errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 9. A line element as claimed in claim 8, wherein said errors comprise logic errors.
- 10. A line element as claimed in claim 4, wherein said error generator delays a predetermined delay interval after receiving said initiation signal before introducing said error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 11. A line element as claimed in claim 10, wherein said error message comprises a single burst of errors.
- 12. A line element as claimed in claim 10, wherein said error generator periodically introduces an error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data after receiving said initiation signal.
- 13. A line element interconnected to incoming and outgoing digital transmission lines, said incoming transmission line carrying an incoming stream of coded, payload data that substantially follows bipolar coding rules and that periodically includes a framing bit, said incoming and outgoing digital transmission lines being interconnected to at least one remote location, said line element defining a location and comprising, in combination:
- a build-out circuit for receiving said incoming stream of coded, payload data along said incoming transmission line and producing an outgoing stream of coded, payload data along said outgoing transmission line, said build-out circuit producing a framing bit along said outgoing transmission line corresponding to said framing bit in said incoming stream of coded, payload data;
- a detector for sensing an inquiry signal in said incoming stream of coded, payload data and responsively providing an initiation signal;
- an error generator for receiving said initiation signal and responsively introducing a burst of errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line, said errors comprising violations of said bipolar coding rules, said error generator delaying a predetermined delay interval, of between four and eleven seconds, after receiving said initiation signal before introducing said errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data; and
- inhibit means for preventing said error generator from introducing said errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data while said build-out circuit is producing said framing bit.
- 14. A method for a transmission line element to transmit status data to a remote location, said transmission line element being interconnected to an incoming digital transmission line and to an outgoing digital transmission line, said incoming digital transmission line carrying an incoming stream of coded, payload data substantially following bipolar coding rules, said method comprising, in combination:
- passing an outgoing stream of coded, payload data along said outgoing digital transmission line upon receipt of said incoming stream of coded, payload data;
- detecting a status inquiry in said incoming stream of coded, payload data; and
- responsively introducing an error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line, said error message corresponding to status data and comprising a burst of violations of said bipolar coding rules.
- 15. A line element as claimed in claim 14, wherein said status data represents a transmission mode of said line element.
- 16. A line element as claimed in claim 14, wherein said status data represents a loopback condition of said line element.
- 17. A method for a transmission line element to transmit status data to a remote location, said transmission line element being interconnected to an incoming digital transmission line and to an outgoing digital transmission line, said incoming digital transmission line carrying an incoming stream of coded, payload data, said method comprising, in combination:
- passing an outgoing stream of coded, payload data along said outgoing digital transmission line upon receipt of said incoming stream of coded, payload data, said outgoing stream of coded, payload data periodically including a framing bit to distinguish groupings in said outgoing stream of coded, payload data;
- detecting a status inquiry in said incoming stream of coded, payload data;
- responsively introducing an error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line, said error message corresponding to status data; and
- inhibiting introduction of said error message where said framing bit is included in said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 18. A line element as claimed in claim 17, wherein said status data represents a transmission mode of said line element.
- 19. A line element as claimed in claim 17, wherein said status data represents a loopback condition of said line element.
- 20. A line element as claimed in claim 17, wherein said error message comprises logic errors.
- 21. A method as claimed in claim 17, further comprising delaying a predetermined delay interval after detecting said status inquiry before putting said error message into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 22. A method as claimed in claim 21, wherein introducing an error message comprises introducing a single burst of errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 23. A method as claimed in claim 22, wherein introducing an error message comprises periodically introducing a burst of errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 24. A method of transmitting status data from a transmission line element to a remote location, said transmission line element being interconnected to an incoming digital transmission line and to an outgoing digital transmission line, said incoming digital transmission line carrying an incoming stream of coded, payload data that substantially follows bipolar coding rules, said method comprising, in combination:
- producing an outgoing stream of coded, payload data along said outgoing digital transmission line upon receipt of said incoming stream of coded, payload data, said outgoing stream of coded, payload data periodically including a framing bit to distinguish groupings in said outgoing stream of coded, payload data;
- detecting a status inquiry;
- counting a predetermined delay interval, of between four and eleven seconds, after detecting said status inquiry;
- after said predetermined delay interval, responsively introducing a burst of errors into said outgoing stream of coded, payload data carried by said outgoing digital transmission line; and
- inhibiting introduction of said burst of errors where a framing bit is included in said outgoing stream of coded, payload data.
- 25. A method as claimed in claim 24, wherein said burst of errors represents status information.
- 26. A method as claimed in claim 25, wherein said status information corresponds to a location of said transmission line element.
- 27. A method as claimed in claim 25, wherein said errors comprise violations of said bipolar coding rules.
- 28. A method as claimed in claim 25, wherein said errors comprise logic code violations.
