Claims
- 1. A remote, wireless electrical signal measurement device for measuring and adjusting components in a communications system, the device comprising:
a source device that is capable of generating a data output and receiving a data input; a base system operably connected to the source device, the base system comprising:
an interface unit that interprets the data output and the data input; a first modulator that formats the interpreted output data into a first data signal; a first antenna that transmits the first data signal and receives a second data signal; and a first receiver/demodulator that formats the second data signal to the input data; and a remote system comprising:
a second antenna that transmits the second data signal and receives the first data signal; a second receiver/demodulator that formats the first data signal to a demodulated signal; a speaker that emits an audio portion of the demodulated signal; a body mounted display that displays a video portion of the demodulated signal; a microphone that generates an outgoing signal for controlling the measurement and adjustment of the source device; and a second modulator that formats the outgoing signal to the second data signal.
- 2. The remote, wireless electrical signal measurement device of claim 1, wherein the visual display link and audio link are integrated into a headpiece.
- 3. The remote, wireless electrical signal measurement device of claim 1, wherein the visual display link and audio link are attached to a hard hat worn by the technician.
- 4. The remote, wireless electrical signal measurement device of claim 1, wherein the spoken commands recognized by the speech recognizer include speaker independent words and speaker dependent words, and wherein the speech recognizer has a training function for speaker dependent words.
- 5. The remote, wireless electrical signal measurement device of claim 4, wherein speaker independent words are recognized by the speech recognizer to select among a predetermined number of designated users.
- 6. A self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device for measuring and adjusting electrical signals in a source device, the device comprising:
a test probe for measuring and adjusting an electrical signal in a source device; a base unit including a first central processing unit (CPU) and a first antenna, the first CPU digitizing the measured electrical signal and formatting the digitized signal for display; and a remote unit that is attachable or worn on the person of a technician, the system unit comprising:
a second central processing unit (CPU), wherein the CPU provides feedback to a user regarding the electrical signal; a visual display link displaying the user feedback an audio link generating electrical signals in response to spoken commands by the technician. which spoken commands are recognized by the speech recognition software running on the CPU and associated circuitry to direct and navigate through a displayed user interface to operate electrical signal measurement device functions, including storing digitized measurements in memory; a speech recognizer communicating with the CPU to operate electrical signal measurement functions in response to spoken commands from the technician; a memory communicating with the CPU to store digitized measurements; and a second antenna, wherein the remote unit is capable of forming a wireless link with the base unit through the second and first antennas, respectively, for the transfer of electrical signals therebetween, wherein all measurements may be made in a hands-free manner.
- 7. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, further comprising a user interface to receive manual controls entered by a user to direct and navigate through user interface to operate electrical signal measurement device functions.
- 8. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 7, further comprising a cursor control on the remote unit and wherein the remote unit is responsive to the cursor control.
- 9. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, wherein the visual display link and audio link are integrated into a headpiece.
- 10. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, wherein the visual display link and audio link are attached to a hard hat worn by the technician.
- 11. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, wherein the visual display link and audio link are incorporated into a chest-mounted unit.
- 12. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, wherein the visual display link and audio link are carried in a compartmentalized carrying case having a neck strap and a flap which, when lifted, reveals the visual display link and the audio link.
- 13. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, wherein the spoken commands recognized by the speech recognition software running on the CPU include speaker independent words and speaker dependent words, and wherein the speech recognition software running on the CPU and associated circuitry has a training function for speaker dependent words.
- 14. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 13, wherein speaker independent words are recognized by the speech recognition software running on the CPU to select among a predetermined number of designated users.
- 15. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 14, wherein the speaker dependent words recognized by the speech recognition software on the CPU for a selected one of the predetermined number of designated users include words meaning “tune” and “range”, the software responding to the word meaning “tune” to activate a tune mode in which the technician can navigate tuning the device for a measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands and the software responding to the word meaning “range” to activate a range mode in which the technician can navigate selecting a range for a measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands.
- 16. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 15 wherein the speaker dependent words recognized by the speech recognition software on the CPU for a selected one of the predetermined number of designated users include words meaning “scale” and “zoom”, the software responding to the word meaning “scale” to activate a scale mode in which the technician can navigate scaling the device for a measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands and the software responding to the word meaning “zoom” to activate a zoom mode in which the technician can navigate an expansion or compression of display of a measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands.
- 17. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 15, wherein the speaker dependent words recognized by the speech recognition software on the CPU for a selected one of the predetermined number of designated users include words meaning “hum” and “CNR”, the software responding to the word meaning “hum” to activate a hum mode in which the technician can navigate a hum a measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands and the software responding to the word meaning “CNR” to activate a range mode in which the technician can navigate selecting a carrier to noise measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands.
- 18. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 10 wherein the speaker dependent words recognized by the speech recognition software on the CPU for a selected one of the predetermined number of designated users include words meaning “CAD” and “TP”, the software responding to the word meaning “CAD” to activate a comparative analysis mode in which the technician can navigate a comparative analysis measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands and the software responding to the word meaning “TP” to activate a test point mode in which the technician can navigate selecting a test point offset measurement by a predetermined script of spoken commands.
- 19. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 15, wherein the speaker dependent words recognized by the speech recognition software on the CPU for a selected one of the predetermined number of designated users include a word meaning “store”, the software responding to the word meaning “store” to activate a store mode in which the technician can navigate storing digitized measurement data in memory by a predetermined script of spoken commands.
- 20. The self-contained, hands-free electrical signal measurement device of claim 6, further comprising in the system unit a speech synthesizer generating audio feedback messages to the technician.
