Claims
- 1. A disk drive adapted for receiving a removable cartridge having a cartridge base and a disk for storing data, the disk mounted on a hub which is movable relative to a cartridge base, said disk drive comprising:
- a disk drive housing having a disk drive housing base;
- a motor capable of rotating a disk in a cartridge about an axis of rotation, said motor being mounted to said disk drive housing such that, except for said rotation, said motor is not movable relative to said disk drive housing;
- a cartridge receiving structure which is configured to receive a cartridge and does not move a cartridge along said axis of rotation of said motor; and
- a mechanism movable between a first position and a second position, where said mechanism in said first position is adapted to avoid engaging a cartridge and said mechanism in said second position is adapted to engage a cartridge to lower a hub to said motor without moving said motor relative to said disk drive housing and without moving a cartridge base along said axis of rotation of said motor.
- 2. The disk drive of claim 1 wherein said motor is mounted to said disk drive housing in order to prevent said motor from moving along said axis of rotation.
- 3. The disk drive of claim 1 wherein said mechanism rotates substantially about said axis of rotation.
- 4. A disk drive adapted for receiving a removable cartridge, the cartridge including a cartridge housing and a data storage disk assembly which is movable relative to a cartridge housing, said disk drive comprising:
- a stationary motor;
- a receiving structure adapted to position a cartridge in a plane spaced from said motor and does not move a cartridge relative to said plane; and
- a mechanism movable between a first position and a second position where said mechanism in said first position is adapted to avoid engaging a cartridge and said mechanism in said second position is adapted to engage a cartridge to lower a disk assembly onto said motor (1) without repositioning a cartridge relative to said first position, and (2) without moving said motor.
- 5. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein said mechanism has a lever which pivotally moves between said first position and said second position.
- 6. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein
- said mechanism has an eject mechanism adapted to eject a cartridge.
- 7. The disk drive of claim 4 further comprising:
- a handle structure which moves said mechanism between said first position and said second position; and
- a lock for locking said handle structure in at least one position.
- 8. The disk drive of claim 4, including:
- a read/write transducer;
- said mechanism having a lock that locks said transducer in a position.
- 9. The disk drive of claim 4 including:
- a read/write transducer;
- said mechanism having a lock that locks said transducer in a retracted position away from a disk assembly when a cartridge is positioned in said plane spaced from said motor.
- 10. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein:
- said mechanism has a central annular opening;
- said disk drive further including a mount which mounts said mechanism to said disk drive with said central annular opening of said mechanism disposed about said motor so that said mechanism rotates about said motor.
- 11. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein said disk drive housing is approximately 10.5 millimeters high.
- 12. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein said mechanism rotates in a first direction when moving from said first position to said second position and a second direction when moving from said second position to said first position.
- 13. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein said mechanism is a movable handle structure, said handle structure moving (1) from a position within the disk drive which is not accessible by a user to (2) a position which extends from the disk drive and is accessible by a user as the cartridge is inserted into said receiving structure.
- 14. A disk drive adapted for receiving a removable cartridge which contains a disk for storing data and a tang which is movable in order to position a disk inside a cartridge, said disk drive comprising:
- a motor rotating about an axis of rotation and not moving along said axis of rotation;
- a receiving structure adapted to position a cartridge in a position spaced apart from said motor;
- a movable handle structure including a first member that moves said handle structure (1) from a position within said disk drive which is not accessible by a user to (2) a position which extends from said disk drive and is accessible by a user as a cartridge is inserted into said receiving structure; and
- said handle structure including a second member adapted to engage a tang of a cartridge in order to reposition a disk onto said motor without repositioning a cartridge from said position spaced apart from said motor.
- 15. The disk drive of claim 14 including
- a mount which mounts said handle structure on said disk drive such that said handle structure is in part positioned about said motor and rotates to bring said second member into engagement with a tang in order to reposition a disk onto said motor.
- 16. A disk drive configured in a 1.8 inch form factor and adapted for receiving a removable cartridge which includes a cartridge housing and a movable disk assembly for storing data, said disk drive comprising:
- a disk drive base;
- a receiving structure adapted to position a cartridge in a first position;
- a motor which rotates about an axis of rotation and does not move along said axis of rotation relative to said disk drive base; and
- a mechanism which moves into a position adapted to engage a cartridge to move a disk assembly onto said motor (1) without repositioning a cartridge relative to said first position, and (2) without moving said motor, said relationship between a disk assembly, said motor and said mechanism permitting space within said disk drive to be used efficiently and enabling said disk drive to have the 1.8 inch form factor configuration.
- 17. The 1.8 inch form factor disk drive of claim 16 including:
- means for allowing the disk drive to be slidingly received in a docking port.
- 18. A disk drive configured in a 1.8 inch form factor and adapted for receiving a removable cartridge which includes a cartridge housing and a movable disk assembly for storing data, said disk drive comprising:
- a head arm assembly;
- a receiver adapted to position a cartridge in a first position;
- a motor which rotates about an axis of rotation; and
- a multi-function handle structure adapted to engage a cartridge to move a disk assembly onto said motor (1) without repositioning a cartridge relative to said first position and (2) without moving said motor, said relationship between a disk assembly, said motor and said handle structure enabling said disk drive to have a 1.8 inch form factor configuration, said handle structure including (1) means for lockingly positioning a cartridge, (2) means for lockingly positioning said head arm assembly, and (3) means for cartridge ejection.
- 19. A disk drive configured in a 1.8 inch form factor and adapted for receiving a removable cartridge which includes a cartridge housing and a movable disk assembly for storing data, said disk drive comprising:
- a receiver adapted to position a cartridge in a first position;
- a motor which rotates about an axis of rotation;
- a handle structure adapted to engage a cartridge to move a disk assembly onto said motor (1) without repositioning a cartridge itself relative to said first position and (2) without moving said motor, said relationship between a disk assembly, said motor and said handle structure enabling said disk drive to have a 1.8 inch form factor configuration, said handle structure defining a handle body with a central aperture; and
- a mounting structure which rotationally mounts said handle structure to said disk drive such that said motor is located within said central aperture of said handle structure, enabling said handle structure to rotate about said motor.
- 20. A disk drive and removable cartridge system comprising:
- a disk drive including a stationary motor that is capable of rotating a disk, a movable handle structure and a receiver which receives a removable cartridge; and
- a removable cartridge including a cartridge housing and a movable disk contained inside said cartridge housing; said removable cartridge also including a hub and a tang which projects from said cartridge housing such that said handle structure engages said tang when said removable cartridge is inserted into said receiver, whereupon said handle structure is moved to position said disk relative to said cartridge housing and move said hub into operative engagement with said motor without moving the entirety of said cartridge housing relative to said motor.
- 21. The system of claim 20 including:
- a handle extending from said handle structure;
- a projection extending from said cartridge housing, said projection cooperating with said handle structure in order to position said handle so that said handle can move from a position within said disk drive to a position which extends from said disk drive and is accessible to a user.
- 22. The system of claim 20 including:
- a projection extending from said cartridge housing, said projection cooperating with said handle structure in order to cause said cartridge to be ejected from said disk drive.
- 23. The system of claim 20 including:
- a second projection which ensures that said handle structure is it a non-extended position upon the ejection of said cartridge from said disk drive.
- 24. The system of claim 20 wherein said cartridge includes a rail for protecting said tang.
- 25. The system of claim 20 wherein said cartridge includes a rail for preventing said cartridge from being incorrectly inserted in said receiver.
- 26. A disk drive adapted for receiving a removable cartridge, the cartridge having a housing, a disk for storing data and a tang which raises and lowers a disk relative to a cartridge, said disk drive comprising:
- a motor which rotates about an axis of rotation and does not move along said axis of rotation;
- a receiver which is adapted to receive a removable cartridge and does not move a removable cartridge along said axis of rotation of said motor; and
- a handle which rotates relative to said motor, said handle including a passage adapted to receive and move a tang to lower a disk onto said motor when said handle is rotated in a first direction without moving a cartridge housing relative to said motor and to raise a disk away from said motor when said handle is rotated in a second direction.
