Claims
- 1. A retaining arrangement for removably attaching a flexible top to a vehicle body, said retaining arrangement including:
- means for forming a U-shaped channel means adjacent said vehicle body, said U-shaped channel means having two legs and a base extending therebetween,
- a flange with an elongated width having first and second end portions spaced from each other along a first axis, means for attaching said flexible top to said flange, said second end portion of said flange being receivable in said U-shaped channel means between the legs thereof, and
- means for removably locking said second end portion of said flange in said U-shaped channel means, said locking means including a mating protuberance and recess, said protuberance extending outwardly on a first of said flange and said U-shaped channel means and said mating recess extending inwardly of a second of said flange and said U-shaped channel means wherein the legs of said U-shaped channel means are spaced apart a first distance and the flange has an effective thickness greater than said first distance creating an interference fit when said second end portion of said flange is initially inserted into said U-shaped channel means to a first position, at least one of said flange and said U-shaped channel being made of resilient, flexible material wherein said at least one of said flange and said U-shaped channel means flexes to allow the second end portion of said flange to be farther inserted into the U-shaped channel means from said first position to a second position with said protuberance spaced from attachment in said recess, and means for rotating at least the second end portion of said flange relative to said U-shaped channel means from said second position to a third, locked position to attach and mate said protuberance in said recess to lock said flange in said U-shaped channel means.
- 2. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said U-shaped channel means is made of relatively rigid material and only said flange is made of said resilient, flexible material and flexes to allow said flange to be moved from said first position toward said third position.
- 3. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said channel forming means forms one of the legs of said U-shaped channel means in a fixed position relative to said vehicle body and wherein at least the other of said legs is made of said resilient, flexible material and flexes to allow said flange to be moved from said first position toward said third position.
- 4. The retaining arrangement of claim 3 wherein said flange is made of relatively rigid material and only said U-shaped channel means flexes.
- 5. The retaining arrangement of claim 3 wherein said one leg of said U-shaped channel means is a portion of the vehicle body.
- 6. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein both of said flange and said U-shaped channel are made of said resilient, flexible material and both of said flange and said U-shaped channel means flex to allow said flange to be moved from said first position toward said third position.
- 7. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said attaching means attaches said top to said flange adjacent the first end portion of said flange.
- 8. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said protuberance is on said flange and said recess is in one leg of said U-shaped channel means.
- 9. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said protuberance is on the second end portion of said flange.
- 10. The retaining arrangement of claim 9 wherein said protuberance is substantially at the terminus of the second end portion of said flange.
- 11. The retaining arrangement of claim 9 wherein said protuberance extends outwardly away from said first axis.
- 12. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said at least one of said flange and U-shaped channel means made of resilient, flexible material assumes a first shape when said flange and U-shaped channel means are in said first position and assumes a different, second shape in said second position and substantially reassumes said first shape in said third position.
- 13. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 wherein said rotating means includes means for applying a force to flex said at least one of said flange and said U-shaped channel means at said second position into a cocked state and means for releasing said one of said flange and said U-shaped channel means from said cocked state as said flange is moved from said second position toward said third position to drive said protuberance and recess into said third, locked position.
- 14. The retaining arrangement of claim 13 wherein said rotating means includes means for continually applying force to continually flex said at least one of said flange and said U-shaped channel means as said flange is moved from said first position to said second position.
- 15. The retaining arrangement of claim 14 wherein said force applying means increases said force as said flange is moved from said first position to said second position.
- 16. The retaining arrangement of claim 13 wherein said attaching means attaches said top to said flange adjacent the first end portion of said flange.
- 17. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 further including means for causing said protuberance and said recess to disengage from said third, locked position and move to said second position when a withdrawal force is applied substantially along said first axis of said flange in a direction from the second end portion of said flange to the first end portion of said flange.
- 18. The retaining arrangement of claim 17 wherein said recess is defined by at least a first surface and said protuberance has at least a second surface abutting said first surface when said withdrawal force is applied wherein at least one of said first and second surfaces is at an angle to the other surface and acts as an inclined ramp for the other of said first and second surfaces to disengage said protuberance and said recess from said third locked position under the influence of said withdrawal force.
- 19. The retaining arrangement of claim 1 further including means for causing said protuberance and recess to disengage from said third position when a withdrawal force is applied to said first end portion of said flange in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first axis of said flange.
- 20. The retaining arrangement of claim 19 further including means for causing said protuberance and recess to move to said second position when a withdrawal force is applied substantially along said first axis in a direction from the second end portion of said flange to the first end portion of said flange.
- 21. The retaining arrangement of claim 13 wherein said at least one of said flange and U-shaped channel means made of resilient, flexible material assumes a first shape when said flange and U-shaped channel means are in said first position and assumes a different, second shape in said second position and substantially reassumes said first shape in said third position.
