Claims
- 1. A culture dish comprising:
an open-ended container with
a bottom wall, at least one sidewall extending upwardly from the bottom wall, and an angular splash-guard; said splash-guard comprises a frame that defines a central aperture; said frame having an inwardly extending flange, which projects over a peripheral portion of the bottom wall; said frame is made of a semi-rigid material,
forms a hermetic seal with a top edge of the sidewall, and is removably attached to the top edge of the sidewall.
- 2. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein said splash-guard comprises a polymer film.
- 3. The culture dish according to claim 2, wherein said splash-guard is made of a polyester film.
- 4. The culture dish according to claim 2, wherein said splash-guard is made of a film of a product of a terephthalic acid and a diol.
- 5. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein said splash-guard made for a metallic film.
- 6. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein said splash-guard is strengthened with ribs.
- 7. The culture dish according to claim 5, wherein said splash-guard contains a webbed network.
- 8. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein heat welding hermetically seals said splash-guard is to the top edge of the sidewall.
- 9. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein said splash-guard is peelably released from said container.
- 10. The culture dish according to claim 8, wherein said splash-guard has a pull-tab.
- 11. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein said splash-guard conforms to conventional culture plate lid configurations and fits easily under a lid when the culture dish is covered.
- 12. The culture dish according to claim 1, the frame of said splash-guard has a shape that is selected from the group consisting of circular, square, rectangular, parallelogram, triangular, trapezoidal, and polygonal forms.
- 13. The culture dish according to claim 1, wherein the frame of said splash-guard is oriented parallel to the plane of the bottom wall, or at an angle of about 90 degrees or greater relative to the sidewall of the container.
- 14. A fluid receptacle for microorganism cultures comprising:
a container with an open top-end; a splash-guard that is hermetically sealed but removably attached to a top rim of said container.
- 15. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard comprises a frame that defines an open, central aperture, and said frame is made of a semi-rigid material.
- 16. The fluid receptacle according to claim 15, wherein said frame has flanges that extend inwardly from said top rim of said container at an angle of about 90 degrees or greater relative to a sidewall of the container.
- 17. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard comprises a polymer film.
- 18. The fluid receptacle according to claim 17, wherein said splash-guard is made of a polyester film.
- 19. The fluid receptacle according to claim 17, wherein said splash-guard is made of a film of a product of a terephthalic acid and a diol.
- 20. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard comprises a metallic foil.
- 21. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard is strengthened with ribs.
- 22. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard contains a webbed network.
- 23. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein heat welding hermetically seals said splash-guard is to the top rim.
- 24. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard is peelably released from said container.
- 25. The fluid receptacle according to claim 24, wherein said splash-guard has a pull-tab.
- 26. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, wherein said splash-guard conforms to a lid configuration and fits easily under a lid when the container is covered.
- 27. The fluid receptacle according to claim 14, the frame of said splash-guard has a shape that is selected from the group consisting of circular, square, rectangular, parallelogram, triangular, trapezoidal, and polygonal forms.
- 28. A method for fabricating a vessel, the method comprising:
a) forming a culture dish having a bottom wall, at least one sidewall extending upwardly from said bottom wall, and an open top-end defined by an upper rim of the sidewall; b) die cutting a film into a geometry and size corresponding to the shape of the open top-end of the culture dish; and c) forming a removable and hermetic seal between said film and the upper rim of the sidewall.
- 29. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film defines an open, central aperature.
- 30. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film covers the open-top end.
- 31. The method according to claim 29, wherein said film is affixed to the upper rim of the sidewall with a section of said film extending over a portion of the bottom wall.
- 32. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film made of a semi-rigid material.
- 33. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film is made of a polymer.
- 34. The method according to claim 33, wherein said film is made of a polyester.
- 35. The method according to claim 33, wherein said film is made of a reaction product of a terephthalic acid and a diol.
- 36. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film is made of a metallic foil.
- 37. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film is strengthened with ribs.
- 38. The method according to claim 28, wherein said film contains a webbed network.
- 39. The method according to claim 28, wherein heat welding hermetically seals said polymer film is to the top rim.
- 40. The method according to claim 28, wherein said polymer film sealed to the top rim of the sidewall with an amount of pressure of about 20 psi to about 100 psi.
- 41. The method according to claim 28, wherein said polymer film is peelably released from said culture dish.
- 42. The method according to claim 41, wherein said polymer film has a pull-tab.
- 43. The method according to claim 28, wherein said polymer film is removed from said culture dish with an amount of force of at about 700 grams or less.
- 44. The method according to claim 28, wherein said polymer film is removed from said culture dish with an amount of force of at least 50 grams or more.
- 45. The method according to claim 28, wherein said polymer film conforms to the configuration of a conventional cell-culture-dish lid and fits easily under a lid when the culture dish is covered.
- 46. The method according to claim 28, the frame of said splash-guard has a shape that is selected from the group consisting of circular, square, rectangular, parallelogram, triangular, trapezoidal, and polygonal forms.
- 47. A method for using a culture dish, the method comprising:
a) providing a culture dish having an open top-end with a removable splash-guard hermetically sealed to a top edge of a sidewall; b) loading a liquid medium into said culture dish; c) depositing an inoculum onto said culture dish; d) processing said inoculum; and e) peeling said splash-guard off of said culture dish.
- 48. The method according to claim 47, wherein said polymer film has a pull-tab.
- 49. The method according to claim 47, wherein said polymer film is removed from said culture dish with an amount of force of at about 700 gram or less.
- 50. The method according to claim 47, wherein said polymer film is removed from said culture dish with an amount of force of at about 50 grams or more.
- 51. The method according to claim 47, wherein said liquid medium gels.
- 52. The method according to claim 47, wherein said inoculum is a selected from the group consisting of bacteria, cells, viruses, or other microorganisms.
