Claims
- 1. A retainer pin, comprising:
an elongate shaft having first and second ends and a central axis extending between the first and second ends; the first end including a non-rotation ridge; and a biased detent member extending from the elongate shaft, the detent member generally biased outwardly along a plane approximately perpendicular to the central axis.
- 2. The retainer pin of claim 1, wherein the second end includes a structure adapted to receive an extraction tool.
- 3. The retainer pin of claim 1, wherein the non-rotation ridge is operable to engage a corresponding slot of a component to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the component when the retainer pin is coupled with the component.
- 4. The retainer pin of claim 3, wherein the component comprises a tooth assembly adapter.
- 5. The retainer pin of claim 3, wherein the component comprises an insert for a tooth assembly.
- 6. The retainer pin of claim 2, wherein the structure comprises an internal recess.
- 7. The retainer pin of claim 6, wherein the internal recess is threaded.
- 8. The retainer pin of claim 6, wherein the internal recess is operable to receive an insert plug.
- 9. The retainer pin of claim 1, wherein the biased detent member comprises at least one spring operable to engage a bore associated with a tooth assembly, if the retainer pin is coupled with the tooth assembly.
- 10. The retainer pin of claim 1, wherein the biased detent member comprises at least one spring coupled with at least one bearing, the spring being operable to urge the bearing radially outward with respect to the central axis such that the bearing engages a bore associated with a tooth assembly if the retainer pin is coupled with the tooth assembly.
- 11. A tooth assembly adapter, comprising:
first and second surfaces and first and second sides, the first surface being generally tapered and converging toward a first end of the adapter; the first end of the adapter adapted to receive a removable tooth point; a second end of the adapter adapted to receive a tooth horn; a central portion extending generally from the first side to the second side, the central portion defining a central bore and being adapted to receive a retainer pin; and the central portion further defining an internal slot extending generally radially outwardly from the central bore, the internal slot configured to receive a detent member associated with the retainer pin.
- 12. The tooth assembly adapter of claim 11, wherein the retainer pin comprises a removable retainer pin having the associated detent member, and further comprising the removable retainer pin, the removable retainer pin being adapted to be received at least partially within the central bore and wherein the detent member is operable to couple the removable retainer pin with the central portion.
- 13. The tooth assembly adapter of claim 11, further comprising an insert adapted to be received at least partially within the central bore.
- 14. A tooth assembly, comprising:
an adapter having first and second surfaces, the first surface being generally tapered and converging toward a first end of the adapter; a tooth point coupled with the adapter at the first end, the tooth point having a contact edge opposite the first end of the adapter; a first side of the tooth point having a non-rotation slot adapted to receive a non-rotation ridge of a retainer pin to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the tooth point; a second end of the adapter adapted to be removably coupled with a tooth horn; and a central portion extending generally from a first side of the adapter to a second side of the adapter, the central portion defining a central bore.
- 15. The tooth assembly of claim 14, wherein the retainer pin is coupled with the central portion and extends at least partially within the central bore.
- 16. The tooth assembly of claim 14, wherein the central portion further defines an internal slot extending generally radially outwardly from the central bore, the internal slot configured to receive a detent member associated with the retainer pin.
- 17. The tooth assembly of claim 14, further comprising:
a removable insert slidably coupled with the central portion at least partially within the central bore; and the retainer pin being coupled to the removable insert.
- 18. The tooth assembly of claim 17, wherein the removable insert includes an internal slot extending at least partially therethrough, the internal slot being configured to receive a detent member associated with the retainer pin.
- 19. The tooth assembly of claim 17, wherein the removable insert includes an internal slot configured to receive the non-rotation ridge of the retainer pin, to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the removable insert.
- 20. A retainer pin, comprising:
an elongate shaft having first and second ends and a central axis extending between the first and second ends; the first end being configured to engage a corresponding slot of a component to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the component when the retainer pin is coupled to the component; and a biased detent member extending from the elongate shaft, the detent member generally biased outwardly along a plane approximately perpendicular to the central axis.
- 21. The retainer pin of claim 20, wherein the second end includes a structure operable to receive an extraction tool.
- 22. The retainer pin of claim 20, wherein the component comprises a tooth assembly adapter.
- 23. The retainer pin of claim 20, wherein the component comprises an insert for a tooth assembly.
- 24. The retainer pin of claim 21, wherein the structure comprises an internal recess.
- 25. The retainer pin of claim 24, wherein the internal recess is threaded.
- 26. The retainer pin of claim 24, wherein the internal recess is operable to receive an insert plug.
- 27. The retainer pin of claim 20, wherein the biased detent member comprises at least one spring operable to engage a bore associated with a tooth assembly, if the retainer pin is coupled with the tooth assembly.
- 28. The retainer pin of claim 20, wherein the biased detent member comprises at least one spring coupled with at least one bearing, the spring being operable to urge the bearing radially outward with respect to the central axis such that the bearing engages a bore associated with a tooth assembly if the retainer pin is coupled with the tooth assembly.
- 29. A tooth assembly, comprising:
an adapter having first and second surfaces, the first surface being generally tapered and converging toward a first end of the adapter; a tooth point coupled with the adapter at the first end, the tooth point having a contact edge opposite the first end of the adapter; a first side of the tooth point having a slot configured to receive a correspondingly-shaped end of a retainer pin to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the tooth point; a second end of the adapter adapted to be removably coupled with a tooth horn; and a central portion extending generally from a first side of the adapter to a second side of the adapter, the central portion defining a central bore.
- 30. The tooth assembly of claim 29, further comprising the retainer pin coupled with the central portion at least partially within the central bore.
- 31. The tooth assembly of claim 29, wherein the central portion further defines an internal slot extending generally radially outwardly from the central bore, the internal slot configured to receive a detent member associated with the retainer pin.
- 32. The tooth assembly of claim 29, further comprising:
a removable insert slidably coupled with the central portion at least partially within the central bore; and the retainer pin slidably coupled to the removable insert.
- 33. The tooth assembly of claim 32, wherein the removable insert comprises a central portion, the central portion defining an internal slot configured to receive a detent member associated with the retainer pin.
- 34. The tooth assembly of claim 32, wherein a first end of the removable insert includes a slot configured to receive a correspondingly-shaped end of the retainer pin to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the removable insert.
- 35. An extraction tool, comprising:
an elongate body having first and second ends, wherein the first end is configured to engage a retainer pin such that a removable coupling is formed between the elongate body and the retainer pin; at least one locking member extending radially outward from the elongate body; and a weighted member slidably coupled with the elongate body, and having a range of motion from the locking members to a position proximate a first end of the elongate body, wherein a second end of the weighted member includes a recess operable to receive the locking members.
- 36. A method for assembling a tooth assembly, comprising:
providing a tooth assembly adapter having first and second tapered surfaces and first and second sides, the first and second tapered surfaces converging toward a first end of the adapter; slidably mounting a tooth point over at least a portion of the first end of the adapter such that an opening through a first side of the tooth point aligns with a central bore through the first side of the adapter; and inserting a retainer pin through the opening at least partially through the central bore until a detent member of the retainer pin engages a corresponding internal slot adjacent to the central bore, the retainer pin having a non-rotation component adapted to engage a corresponding slot in a second side of the tooth point when inserted through the opening.
- 37. The method of claim 36, further comprising inserting an insert through the opening at least partially into the central bore prior to slidably mounting the tooth point over at least a portion of the first end of the adapter.
- 38. A method for disengaging a retainer pin from a tooth assembly, comprising:
engaging a recess of the retainer pin with a threaded end of an extraction tool, the extraction tool including an elongate body having a second end opposite the threaded end, one or more locking members extending radially outward from the elongate body, and a weighted member and slidably coupled with the elongate body and having a range of motion from the locking member to a position proximate the second end of the elongate body; a first end of the weighted member including a structure adapted to receive the locking members; and sliding the weighted member from approximately the position proximate the locking members toward the second end until the weighted member contacts the second end.
- 39. The method of claim 38, further comprising repeating the step of sliding the weighted member from approximately the position proximate the locking members toward the second end until the retainer pin disengages from the tooth assembly.
- 40. A shroud for an excavating machine part, comprising:
first, second and third sides, the second side being generally parallel to the first side; the first and second sides adapted to be coupled to an excavating machine part with a retainer pin; and the first side having a non-rotation slot adapted to receive a correspondingly-shaped end of a retainer pin to prevent rotation of the retainer pin with respect to the shroud.
- 41. An excavating machine assembly, comprising:
an excavating machine part adapted to receive a tooth assembly, the excavating machine part having a central portion defining an internal bore extending generally from a first side of the excavating machine part to a second side of the excavating machine part; a retainer pin coupled to the excavating machine part and extending at least partially through the internal bore, a first end of the retainer pin configured to cooperate with the excavating machine part to prevent rotation of the retainer pin if the retainer pin is coupled with the excavating machine part; the central portion further defining an internal slot extending generally radially outwardly from the internal bore, the first internal slot configured to receive a detent member associated with the retainer pin; and a shroud coupled to the excavating machine part using the retainer pin, the shroud having a first end with a non-rotation slot adapted to engage the non-rotation shape of the first end of the retainer pin.
