Claims
- 1. A method for substantially removing sulfate, borate, bicarbonate and/or phosphate ions from a NaCl brine feed to an electrolytic cell wherein NaCl is electrolyzed to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide, said method comprising
- passing said NaCl brine through a vessel containing a particulate, macroporous cation exchange resin composite having sulfonic acid functional groups and having hydrous zirconium oxide and polyacrylic acid contained therein,
- removing from contact with resin composite in said vessel, the NaCl brine with its sulfate, borate, bicarbonate and/or phosphate ions substantially removed, and
- thereafter feeding said NaCl brine to the said electrolytic cell.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the ions being removed from the NaCl brine are sulfate ions.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the ions being removed from the NaCl brine are borate ions.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the ions being removed from the NaCl brine are bicarbonate ions.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the ions being removed from the NaCl brine are phosphate ions.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the zirconium oxide compound contained in said resin is one derived by the in-situ alkalizing of at least one zirconyl compound of the group consisting of hydrates of ZrOCl.sub.2, Zr(NO.sub.3).sub.4, ZrOBr.sub.2, ZrOI.sub.2, and Zr(SO.sub.4).sub.2.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the polyacrylic acid contained in said resin is formed by the in-situ polymerization of acrylic acid prior to the introduction of the zirconium compound.
