Claims
- 1. A method for operating a 3D graphics rendering subsystem, comprising the steps of:
- in a selectable first mode, operating multiple subprocessors, including a texturing subprocessor which is optimized for texturing operations, to generate pixel values from fragments in accordance with 3D rendering standards, wherein said pixel values are affected by said texturing subprocessor if texturing has been requested; and
- in a selectable second mode, operating said multiple subprocessors, including said texturing subprocessor, to generate pixel values from fragments in accordance with 2D rendering standards, wherein said texturing subprocessor performs character operations.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said texturing subprocessor accesses local memory, without going through a system bus, for temporarily stored texture values in said first mode, and for temporarily stored character data in said second mode.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said texturing subprocessor accesses local memory, without going through a system bus, for temporarily stored texture values in said first mode, and for temporarily stored tile pattern data in said second mode.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said texturing subprocessor accesses local memory, without going through a system bus, for temporarily stored texture values in said first mode, and for temporarily stored stipple pattern data in said second mode.
- 5. A rendering system for processing 2D and 3D graphics, comprising:
- a data bus;
- a memory connected to said data bus;
- a rasterizer connected to said data bus;
- a localbuffer unit connected to said data bus;
- a texturing unit connected to said data bus; and
- a framebuffer unit connected to said data bus;
- wherein said texturing unit processes conventional texture data when in a 3D graphics mode; and
- wherein said texturing unit stores character data when in a 2D mode.
- 6. The system of claim 5, wherein said texturing unit is used for storing pattern data when performing pattern fills in 2D graphics.
- 7. The system of claim 5, wherein said texturing unit is used for storing stipple pattern data.
- 8. The system of claim 5, wherein said texturing unit is used for storing dither patterns for color index dithering.
- 9. A graphics processing subsystem, comprising:
- at least four functionally distinct processing units, each including hardware elements which are customized to perform a rendering operation which is not performed by at least some others of said processing units; at least some ones of said processing units being connected to operate asynchronously to one another;
- a frame buffer, connected to be accessed by at least one of said processing units;
- said processing units being mutually interconnected in a pipeline relationship, such that said processing units jointly provide a pipelined multiple-instruction-multiple-device (MIMD) graphics processing architecture
- wherein said processing units include a texturing unit configured to perform texturing operations when in a 3D graphics mode and not in a 2D graphics mode.
- 10. The graphics processing subsystem of claim 9, wherein said processing units include a scissoring unit.
- 11. The graphics processing subsystem of claim 9, wherein said processing units include a memory access unit which reads and writes a local buffer memory.
- 12. The graphics processing subsystem of claim 9, wherein at least some ones of said processing units include internally paralleled data paths.
- 13. The graphics processing subsystem of claim 9, wherein all of said processing units are integrated into a single integrated circuit.
- 14. The graphics processing subsystem of claim 9, wherein all of said processing units, but not said frame buffer, are integrated into a single integrated circuit.
- 15. The graphics processing subsystem of claim 9, further comprising a color lookup-table and analog conversion circuit which is connected to receive data from said frame buffer and to provide corresponding analog color outputs.
- 16. The system of claim 9, wherein said texturing unit is used for storing pattern data when performing pattern fills in 2D graphics.
- 17. The system of claim 9, wherein said texturing unit is used for storing stipple pattern data.
- 18. The system of claim 9, wherein said texturing unit is used for storing dither patterns for color index dithering.
