Embodiments provided herein generally relate to a rental casket insert and, more specifically, to a rental casket with a locking feature, as well as configurable lid for accommodating different sized and/or positioned deceased individuals.

BACKGROUND

As the cost of presentation caskets has increased and cremation is becoming more popular, many families are choosing to purchase rental casket inserts for use with a rental casket for their deceased loved ones. A rental casket inert may take different forms, but typically is constructed of corrugated cardboard or other clean combustible material. A rental casket insert is typically shipped unassembled or partially assembled, and the funeral home assembles the rental casket insert. Once assembled, a deceased may be placed in the rental casket insert and the rental casket insert and deceased may be placed into the rental casket for presentation. Once presentation is complete, the rental casket insert and deceased may be removed from the rental casket for cremation.

As will be understood, because the rental casket insert is constructed of a corrugated cardboard or other disposable material and because the rental casket insert is moved with the deceased inside, structural integrity is a focus for funeral homes who perform these tasks. Additionally, security of the lid of the rental casket insert is also a priority. Thus, a need exists in the industry.

Similarly, while the detachable portions 332 are depicted on the lid side panels 116, some embodiments may include one or more on a lid end panel 114 and/or upper panel 112.

FIG. 4 depicts an exploded view of the lid 104 of a rental casket insert 100, according to embodiments provided herein. As illustrated, the lid 104 of FIG. 4 is presented in a deconstructed configuration. As such, the lid 104 may include the upper panel 112, the lid end panels 114a, 114b, and the lid side panels 116a, 116b. Additionally, the lid 104 includes lid extension panels 432a, 432b, 432c, 432d. The lid extension panels 432 may be coupled to the lid side panels 116a, 116b, but may not be permanently attached to the lid end panels 114a, 114b. Additionally, the lid end panels 114a, 114b, may include center end panels 434 (e.g., first center end panel 434a and second center end panel 434b). In some embodiments, the center end panels 434a, 434b, include one or more notches 436a, 436b for receiving respective flaps 438a, 438b that are disposed on the lid extension panels 432a, 432b. Similarly, some embodiments may be configured such that the notches 436c, 436d are disposed on the lid extension panels 432c, 432d and the flaps 438c, 438d are disposed on the center end panel 434b. As will be understood FIG. 4 depicts both embodiments, but in practice, notches 436 and the plurality of flaps 438 may be disposed consistently on each side.

In constructing the lid 104, the lid side panels 116a, 116b are folded up approximately 90 degrees (out of page), as well as the center end panels 434a, 434b. The lid extension panels 432a, 432b may both be disposed inside the center end panel 434a and the flaps 438a, 438b may be inserted into the notches 436a, 436b, respectively to secure the lid extension panels 432a to the center end panel 434a. As will be understood, this embodiment may serve as a locking function.

In some embodiments, the center end panel 434b may be folded up approximately 90 degrees (out of page) and the lid extension panels 432c, 432d may be folded outside the center end panel 434b. The flaps 438c, 438d may be inserted into the notches 436c, 436d, respectively to secure the lid extension panels 432c, 432d to the center end panel 434b. Again, with the flaps 438c, 438d extending outward, the flaps 438c, 438d may serve as part of the locking function described below.

It will be understood that while the example of FIG. 4 depicts each of the lid extension panels 432 as extending across the entirety of the center end panels 434a, 434b, respectively, this is one embodiments. In some embodiments, the lid extension panels 432 each only extend about halfway across the center end panels 434a, 434b, respectively. Other embodiments regarding the length of the lid extension panels 432 are also contemplated.

FIG. 5 depicts a perspective view of the lid 104 of a rental casket insert 100, according to embodiments provided herein. As illustrated, the embodiment of FIG. 5 depicts that the lid extension panels 432a, 432b are folded inward and disposed inside the center end panel 434a. The flaps 438a, 438b are inserted into the notches 436a, 436b, respectively to secure the center end panel 434a to the lid extension panels 432a, 432b.

As will be understood this embodiment is configured such that the flaps 438a, 438b are directed inward when engaged with the notches 436a, 436b. Some embodiments configured in this manner may utilize an extension piece on the flaps 438a, 438b that extends outward to provide the locking mechanism discussed with reference to FIGS. 6A, 6B. Other configurations are also contemplated.

FIG. 6A depicts a lateral view of engagement of the lid 104 with the base 102 of a rental casket insert 100, depicting a resting mechanism, according to embodiments provided herein. As illustrated, the lid 104 may be placed on the base 102, such that the lid 104 is disposed within the cavity (e.g., disposed inside the base end panels 108 and base side panels 110). As such, the flap 438, which extends outward from the lid end panel 114 and may be utilized to rest the lid 104 on the middle base end panel 224 (not depicted in FIG. 6A, 6B) and/or on the edges of the inner base end panel 222 and/or the outer base end panel 226. This may provide a configuration where the lid 104 may be able to cover a deceased without fully engaging with the base 102.

FIG. 6B depicts a lateral view of engagement of the lid 104 with the base 102 of a rental casket insert 100, depicting a locking mechanism, according to embodiments provided herein. As illustrated, the lid 104 may be forced downward to engage further with the base 102. In this configuration, the flap 438 may bend upward allowing the lid 104 to move downward. While the flap 438 is in this position, the flap 438 is exerting an outward force on the interior surface of the base end panel 108. The lid 104 may be pushed to (or past) the aperture 228. Thus, if an upward force is placed on the lid 104 relative to the base 102, which would normally cause the lid 104 to disengage with the base 102, the flap 438 will engage with the aperture 228 and/or an interior surface of a first layer or second layer of the base 102, as shown in FIG. 6B, restricting further upward movement, thereby removably locking the lid 104 to the base 102.

In some embodiments, this locking mechanism may be overcome by additional upward force applied to the lid 104, which may break or deform the flap 438 to such an extent that it may no longer operate as a locking mechanism. In some embodiments, the flap 438 will be reusable. In some embodiments, the lid 104 may only be disengaged from this locking mechanism by pushing the lid 104 below the aperture 228 and inserting a tool between the base end panel 108 and the flap 438 to restrict outward movement of the flap 438, as the lid 104 is forced upward past the aperture 228.

As illustrated above, various embodiments of a rental casket insert are disclosed.
