Claims
- 1. A modular opto-mechanical unit comprising:
- a light source;
- a modulator assembly which modulates light from said light source;
- a lens located in a light path between said light source and said modulator assembly, said lens focussing said light from said light source toward a center of said modulator assembly; and
- a base which removably supports said light source, said modulator assembly and said lens in an optically aligned manner, said base being removably attachable to a receiving structure of a printer, such that an attachment of said base having said optically aligned light source, modulator assembly, and lens supported thereon, permits light from said modulator assembly to be focussed onto an optical element of the printer.
- 2. A unit according to claim 1, wherein said light source is a laser assembly.
- 3. A unit according to claim 1, wherein said base comprises a first surface which removably supports said light source, said modulator assembly and said lens, and a second surface which comprises first and second cylindrical end surfaces which cooperate with receiving surfaces of said receiving structure when said base is attached to said receiving structure.
- 4. A unit according to claim 3, wherein said second surface of said base further comprises a locating pin which fits into a groove on said receiving structure when said base is attached to said receiving structure.
- 5. A unit according to claim 3, wherein said cylindrical end surfaces have a longitudinal axis which is substantially parallel to a light beam exiting said modulator assembly.
- 6. A unit according to claim 1, further comprising flexures which movably fix said light source and said modulator assembly onto said base.
- 7. A unit according to claim 6, wherein said base further comprises a first pivot plate onto which said light source is mounted and a second pivot plate onto which said modulator assembly is mounted, said flexures and said first and second pivot plates permitting limited movement of said light source and said modulator assembly as said light source and said modulator assembly are fixed to said base.
- 8. A unit according to claim 1, wherein said optical element is a fiber.
- 9. A unit according to claim 1, wherein said receiving structure is a casting.
- 10. A field replaceable opto-mechanical unit comprising:
- a light source;
- a first lens which receives light from said light source and forms a beam waist;
- a modulator assembly which receives said beam waist from said first lens, such that said field replaceable unit produces a beam diffracted out of said modulator assembly; and
- a base having a first surface which holds said light source, said first lens, and said modulator assembly, and a second surface which is mountable onto a receiving surface of a printer assembly, said printer assembly having at least a second lens which receives said diffracted beam from said modulator assembly;
- said second surface of said base comprising at least one cylindrical surface having a longitudinal center axis which is substantially parallel to an optical axis of said second lens, such that said light source, said first lens, and said modulator assembly are held on said base in a fixed manner with respect to said first and second surfaces of said base so that said diffracted beam extends substantially along said optical axis of said second lens.
- 11. A unit according to claim 10, wherein said light source is a laser assembly.
- 12. A unit according to claim 10, wherein said second surface of said base further comprises a locating pin which fits into a groove on said receiving surface.
- 13. A unit according to claim 10, further comprising flexures which movably fix said light source and said modulator assembly onto said base.
- 14. A unit according to claim 13, wherein said base further comprises a first pivot plate onto which said light source is mounted and a second pivot plate onto which said modulator assembly is mounted, said flexures and said first and second pivot plates permitting limited movement of said light source and said modulator assembly when said light source and said modulator assembly are fixed to said base.
- 15. A modular opto-mechanical unit comprising:
- a base having first and second pivot plates;
- a light source mounted on one of said first and second pivot plates; and
- a modulator assembly mounted on the other of said first and second pivot plates;
- said first and second pivot plates permitting a positional adjustment of said light source and said modulator assembly as said light source and said modulator assembly are fixed on said base.
- 16. A unit according to claim 15, further comprising flexures for movably fixing said light source and said modulator assembly on said base.
- 17. A unit according to claim 15, wherein said light source is a laser assembly.
- 18. An opto-mechanical unit comprising:
- a base;
- a light source mounted on said base; and
- a modulator assembly mounted on said base so as to be optically aligned with said light source;
- said base having a cylindrical surface which mates with a receiving surface of a printer in a manner in which light from said modulator assembly is aligned with an optical element on said printer.
- 19. A unit according to claim 18, wherein said light source is a laser assembly.
