Claims
- 1. A reproduction apparatus that receives and reproduces a digital broadcast, wherein through the digital broadcast, moving picture data, a plurality of video objects, and mapping information are transmitted, each video object including a plurality of pieces of sub-picture data that are to be selectively reproduced, each piece of sub-picture data including still picture data and coordinates information that shows a display position of the still picture, the mapping information including sets of display mode information and sub-picture identifying information, for identifying a sub-picture that corresponds to each display mode for the moving picture data, the display mode information indicating a display mode in which the moving picture data is displayed in one of a plurality of aspect ratios, the sub-picture identifying information identifying a piece out of the pieces of sub-picture whose coordinates information coincides with the display mode indicated by the display mode information, and the reproduction apparatus comprises: a display setting register that records thereon display information that shows a display mode into which the moving picture data is processed, and a control unit operable 1) to determine sub-picture identifying information that coincides with the display information recorded on the display setting register by referring to the display mode information transmitted through the digital broadcast, and 2) to control reproduction so that sub-picture data identified by the determined sub-picture identifying information is used in the reproduction.
- 2. The reproduction apparatus of claim 1,wherein the plurality of aspect ratios include 16:9 and 4:3, and the display mode information indicates at least one of the following display modes into which the video data is processed, the display modes including: a wide-screen television mode in which pictures with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9, a standard television mode in which pictures with an aspect ratio of 4:3 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3, a pan scan mode in which pictures with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3 after trimming to give 4:3 aspect ratio pictures, and a letterbox mode in which pictures with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3 after processing to add corrective pictures.
- 3. The reproduction apparatus of claim 2,wherein each of the sub-picture data includes one of: (a) wide-screen television mode coordinates information indicating a display position of still picture data if moving picture data has been processed into a wide-screen television mode; (b) standard television mode coordinates information indicating a display position of still picture data in coordinates system on a display of a standard television mode; (c) pan scan mode coordinates information indicating a display position of still picture data in coordinates system on a display of pan scan mode; and (d) letterbox mode coordinates information indicating a display position of still picture data in coordinates system on a display of letterbox mode, and the mapping information includes at least one of the following sets: (1) a set of sub-picture indicating information indicating sub-picture data that has the wide-screen television mode coordinates information, and display mode information indicating the wide-screen television mode; (2) a set of sub-picture indicating information indicating sub-picture data that has standard television mode coordinates information, and display mode information indicating the standard television mode; (3) a set of sub-picture indicating information indicating sub-picture data that has the pan scan mode coordinates information, and display mode information indicating the pan scan mode; and (4) a set of sub-picture indicating information indicating sub-picture data that has the letterbox mode coordinates information, and display mode information indicating the letterbox mode.
- 4. In a digital broadcasting system for the transmission of video data that can be displayed at an aspect ratio specified out of a plurality of aspect ratios, the improvement of a data format comprising:video objects, including video objects having main video data and a plurality of sets of sub-picture data, wherein each set of sub-picture data includes a set of tel-op data and a set of coordinate information showing a display position of the set of tel-op data; and mapping information including a plurality of pairings of a set of display mode information and a set of sub-picture indicating information is provided to enable a plurality of display methods; wherein each set of display mode information enables the frame data to be decoded from the main video data and displayed by one of the display methods at one of the plurality of aspect ratios, and wherein each set of the sub-picture indicating information shows a set of sub-picture data, out of the plurality of sets of sub-picture data in a data stream including the main video data, which includes a set of coordinate information which coincides with one of the display methods shown by the display mode information.
- 5. The digital broadcasting system of claim 4 wherein the plurality of aspect ratios includes 4:3 and 16:9, and wherein the frame data can be processed according to one of the following species of display methods:a wide-screen television mode in which images with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9; a standard television mode in which images with an aspect ratio of 4:3 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3; a pan scan mode in which images with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3, after trimming, to give 4:3 aspect ratio images; and a letterbox display mode in which images with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are displayed on a display screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3 after processing to add corrective images.
