Claims
- 1. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition comprising:
- (a) a terpolymer comprised of repeat units derived from (1) about 0.1 to 6 weight percent acrylic acid, (2) about 0.1 to 4 weight percent methacrylic acid, and (3) about 93 to 99 weight percent copolymerizable monomers, with the proviso that the total amount of repeat units derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and other carboxyl group containing monomers in said terpolymer does not exceed 7 weight percent, said weight percentages being based upon the total weight of said terpolymer; and
- (b) from 0.005 to 1 weight percent, based upon the total weight of said powder composition of at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfonates and metal salts of alkyl sulfates.
- 2. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 1 wherein the total amount of repeat units derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and other carboxyl group containing monomers in said terpolymer does not exceed 5 weight percent.
- 3. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 2 wherein said terpolymer is comprised of repeat units derived from (1) about 0.5 to 4 weight percent acrylic acid, (2) about 0.5 to 3 weight percent methacrylic acid, and (3) about 95 to 99 weight percent copolymerizable monomers, said weight percentages being based upon the total weight of said terpolymer.
- 4. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 3 wherein said members selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfates and metal salts of alkyl sulfonates contain from 4 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 5. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 4 wherein said copolymerizable monomers are one or more members selected from the group consisting of vinylaromatic monomers, alkyl acrylate monomers, and diene monomers.
- 6. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 5 wherein said copolymerizable monomers selected from the group consisting of vinylaromatic monomers, alkyl acrylate monomers, and diene monomers are vinylaromatic monomers and alkyl acrylate monomers; wherein from 43 to 89 weight percent of the repeat units in said terpolymer are derived from vinylaromatic monomers; and wherein from 10 to 50 weight percent of the repeat units in said terpolymer are derived from alkyl acrylate monomers.
- 7. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 6 wherein the total amount of repeat units derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and other carboxyl group containing monomers in said terpolymer is from 2 to 4 weight percent.
- 8. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 1 wherein from 2 to 4 weight percent of the repeat units in said terpolymer are derived from acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.
- 9. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 8 wherein said terpolymer is comprised of repeat units derived from (1) 1 to 3 weight percent acrylic acid, (2) 0.5 to 2 weight percent methacrylic acid, (3) 55 to 78 weight percent vinylaromatic monomers, and (4) 20 to 40 weight percent alkyl acrylate monomers.
- 10. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 9 wherein said alkyl acrylate monomers have alkyl groups containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 11. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 10 wherein said vinylaromatic monomer is styrene.
- 12. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 11 wherein said alkyl acrylate monomer is butylacrylate.
- 13. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 12 wherein said member selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfonates and metal salts of alkyl is sodium lauryl sulfate.
- 14. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 1 wherein said members selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfates and metal salts of alkyl sulfonates contain from 10 to 14 carbon atoms.
- 15. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 14 wherein said resin powder composition contains from 0.008 to 0.3 weight percent, based upon the total weight of said powder composition, of at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfonates and metal salts of alkyl sulfates.
- 16. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 15 wherein the total amount of repeat units derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and other carboxyl group containing monomers in said terpolymer does not exceed 5 weight percent.
- 17. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 16 wherein said terpolymer is comprised of repeat units derived from (1) 1 to 3 weight percent acrylic acid, (2) 0.5 to 2 weight percent methacrylic acid, (3) 55 to 78 weight percent vinylaromatic monomers, and (4) 20 to 40 weight percent alkyl acrylate monomers.
- 18. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 17 wherein said resin powder composition contains from 0.01 to 0.1 weight percent, based upon the total weight of said powder composition, of at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfonates and metal salts of alkyl sulfates.
- 19. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 18 wherein said member selected from the group consisting of metal salts of alkyl sulfonates and metal salts of alkyl sulfates is sodium lauryl sulfate.
- 20. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 19 wherein said vinylaromatic monomer is styrene and wherein said alkyl acrylate monomers have alkyl groups containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 21. A self-emulsifiable resin powder composition as specified in claim 19 wherein said alkyl acrylate monomer is butylacrylate.
