Claims
- 1. An optical source for providing a wavelength-stabilized optical output to a resonant optical cavity for which a portion of optical energy in a predetermined wavelength range that is directed to the cavity is transmitted out of the cavity, an intensity of the transmitted optical energy being maximum when the optical energy directed to the cavity has a primary wavelength that satisfies a peak resonant condition of the cavity, the source comprising:an optical signal generator generating an optical signal with an output wavelength in said predetermined wavelength range and directing the optical signal to the optical cavity; and an optical coupler that receives the transmitted optical energy from the optical cavity and couples it to the optical signal generator as feedback optical energy that interacts directly with optical energy in the optical signal generator and influences the optical signal generator such that the optical signal from the generator has substantially the same primary wavelength as the feedback optical energy.
- 2. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical signal generator comprises a fiber laser.
- 3. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical coupler comprises a wavelength division multiplexer that couples optical energy outside of the predetermined wavelength range to a signal output port.
- 4. An optical source according to claim 1 further comprising an optical filter through which the transmitted optical energy passes prior to being coupled into the optical signal generator, the filter blocking optical energy outside of said wavelength range.
- 5. An optical source according to claim 1 further comprising a feedback attenuator through which the transmitted optical energy passes prior to being coupled into the optical signal generator, the attenuator reducing the magnitude of the transmitted optical energy.
- 6. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical coupler comprises a unidirectional optical coupler.
- 7. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical coupler comprises a wavelength selective component that limits the optical energy coupled to the optical signal generator substantially to the predetermined wavelength range.
- 8. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical coupler is a first optical coupler and wherein the optical source further comprises a second optical coupler that couples optical energy from the optical signal generator to the optical cavity.
- 9. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein, at a given point in time, a majority of the optical signal resonates within the optical cavity.
- 10. An optical source according to claim 1 further comprising a wavelength selective component that directs optical energy from the optical cavity that is outside of the predetermined wavelength range to an output port.
- 11. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical cavity is part of a laser.
- 12. An optical source according to claim 1 wherein the optical cavity is part of an optical amplifier.
- 13. An optical source according to claim 2 wherein the fiber laser comprises a doped optical fiber that is pumped with a semiconductor diode.
- 14. An optical source according to claim 6 wherein the optical coupler is part of an optical circulator.
- 15. An optical source according to claim 8 wherein the second optical coupler comprises a unidirectional coupler.
- 16. An optical source according to claim 10 wherein the wavelength selective component directs the transmitted optical energy to the optical coupler.
- 17. An optical source according to claim 15 wherein the first optical coupler comprises a unidirectional coupler.
- 18. An optical source according to claim 17 wherein the first optical coupler and the second optical coupler are both part of an optical circulator.
- 19. An optical gain apparatus comprising:a gain medium having an optical cavity for which a majority of optical pumping energy in a first wavelength range that is directed to the cavity enters the cavity, and resonates within the cavity, while a smaller amount of said pumping energy is transmitted out of the cavity, an intensity of the transmitted pumping energy being maximum when the pumping energy directed toward the cavity has a primary wavelength that satisfies a peak resonant condition of the cavity, the gain medium converting the pumping energy to signal energy in a second wavelength range; an optical pump source generating optical pumping energy in the first wavelength range and directing the pumping energy to the optical cavity; and an optical coupler that receives the transmitted optical energy from the optical cavity and couples it to the optical pump source as feedback optical energy that interacts directly with optical energy in the optical signal generator and influences the optical signal generator such that the optical signal from the generator has substantially the same primary wavelength as the feedback optical energy.
- 20. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical pump source comprises a fiber laser.
- 21. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical coupler comprises a wavelength division multiplexer that couples optical energy substantially outside of the wavelength range to a signal output port.
- 22. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 further comprising an optical filter through which the transmitted optical energy passes prior to being coupled to the optical pump source, the filter blocking optical energy outside of said wavelength range.
- 23. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 further comprising a feedback attenuator through which the transmitted optical energy passes prior to being coupled to the optical pump source, the attenuator reducing the magnitude of the transmitted optical energy.
- 24. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical coupler is a unidirectional optical coupler.
- 25. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical coupler comprises a wavelength selective component that limits the optical energy coupled in the second direction along the first optical path substantially to the predetermined wavelength range.
- 26. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical coupler is a first optical coupler and wherein the optical source further comprises a second optical coupler that couples optical energy from the optical pump source to the optical cavity.
- 27. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 further comprising a wavelength selective component that directs optical energy from the optical cavity that is outside of the predetermined wavelength range to an output port.
- 28. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical cavity is part of a laser.
- 29. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the optical cavity is part of an optical amplifier.
- 30. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 20 wherein the fiber laser comprises a doped optical fiber that is pumped with a semiconductor diode.
- 31. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 24 wherein the optical coupler is part of an optical circulator.
- 32. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 26 wherein the second optical coupler comprises a unidirectional coupler.
- 33. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the wavelength selective component directs the transmitted optical energy to the optical coupler.
- 34. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 32 wherein the first optical coupler comprises a unidirectional coupler.
- 35. An optical gain apparatus according to claim 34 wherein the first optical coupler and the second optical coupler are both part of an optical circulator.
- 36. A method of providing a wavelength-stabilized optical output to a resonant optical cavity for which a portion of optical energy in a predetermined wavelength range that is directed to the cavity is transmitted out of the cavity, an intensity of the transmitted optical energy being maximum when the optical energy directed toward the cavity has a primary wavelength that satisfies a peak resonant condition of the cavity, the method comprising:generating, with an optical signal generator, an optical signal having an output wavelength in said predetermined wavelength range and directing the signal to the optical cavity; and coupling the transmitted optical energy from the optical cavity to the optical signal generator as feedback optical energy that interacts directly with optical energy in the optical signal generator and influences the optical signal generator such that the optical signal from the generator has substantially the same primary wavelength as the feedback optical energy.
- 37. A method according to claim 36 wherein generating an optical signal comprises generating an optical signal with an optical signal generator that comprises a fiber laser.
- 38. A method according to claim 36 wherein coupling the transmitted optical energy comprises coupling the transmitted optical energy with a wavelength division multiplexer that directs optical energy outside of said wavelength range to a signal output port.
- 39. A method according to claim 36 further comprising filtering the transmitted optical energy with an optical filter prior to its being directed to the optical signal generator, the filter blocking optical energy outside of said wavelength range.
- 40. A method according to claim 36 further comprising attenuating the transmitted optical energy with an optical attenuator prior to its being directed to the optical signal generator.
- 41. A method according to claim 37 wherein generating an optical signal comprises generating an optical signal with an optical signal generator that comprises a fiber laser pumped with a semiconductor diode.
- 42. A method of providing amplified optical energy, the method comprising:providing a gain medium having an optical cavity for which a majority of optical pumping energy in a first predetermined wavelength range that is directed to the cavity enters the cavity and resonates within the cavity, while a smaller amount of said pumping energy is transmitted out of the cavity, an intensity of the transmitted pumping energy being maximum when the pumping energy directed toward the cavity has a primary wavelength that satisfies a peak resonant condition of the cavity, the gain medium converting the pumping energy to signal energy in a second wavelength range; generating, with an optical pump source, optical pumping energy in the first wavelength range and directing the pumping energy to the optical cavity; and coupling the transmitted optical energy from the optical cavity to the optical pump source as feedback optical energy that interacts directly with optical energy in the optical signal generator and influences the optical signal generator such that the optical signal from the generator has substantially the same primary wavelength as the feedback optical energy.
- 43. A method according to claim 42 wherein coupling the transmitted optical energy comprises coupling the transmitted optical energy with an optical coupler that comprises a wavelength division multiplexer that directs optical energy substantially outside of the wavelength range to a signal output port.
- 44. A method according to claim 42 further comprising filtering the transmitted optical energy with an optical filter prior to its being coupled into the optical signal generator, the filter blocking optical energy outside of said wavelength range.
- 45. A method according to claim 42 further comprising directing the transmitted optical energy to a feedback attenuator prior to its being coupled into the optical signal generator, the attenuator reducing the magnitude of the transmitted optical energy.
- 46. A method according to claim 42 wherein coupling the transmitted optical energy comprises coupling the transmitted optical energy with a unidirectional optical coupler.
- 47. A method according to claim 42 wherein coupling the transmitted optical energy comprises coupling the transmitted optical energy with an optical coupler that comprises a wavelength selective component that limits the optical energy coupled in the second direction along the first optical path substantially to the predetermined wavelength range.
- 48. A method according to claim 42 wherein the optical coupler is a first optical coupler and wherein the method further comprises coupling optical energy from the optical signal generator to the optical cavity with a second optical coupler.
- 49. A method according to claim 46 wherein the unidirectional optical coupler is part of an optical circulator.
- 50. A method according to claim 48 wherein the second optical coupler comprises a unidirectional coupler.
