Claims
- 1. A method for establishing a guaranteed quality of service Internet protocol (IP) connection between an originating host device and a destination host device through a switched transport network, the originating host device connecting with a bridging device that interfaces with the switched transport network and an IP network, the method comprising:
associating a switched transport network address of the bridging device with an IP address of the bridging device, without communicating with an address server, in response to an initiating signaling message directed to the destination host device through the IP network; receiving a new IP address for the originating host device, determined by the destination host device; and establishing the IP connection between the originating host device and the destination host device through the switched transport network, in response to a setup signaling message directed to the switched transport network address of the bridging device, the setup signaling message corresponding to the new IP address.
- 2. The method for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 1, the new IP address being recognizable by at least one of a private network and a secure network, associated with the destination host device.
- 3. The method for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 1, the switched transport network comprising an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network.
- 4. The method for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 3, the IP connection comprising a switched virtual circuit connection.
- 5. The method for establishing the plurality of IP connections according to claim 1, the switched transport network comprising a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network.
- 6. The method for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 1, the initiating signaling message comprising a resource reservation protocol path message.
- 7. The method for establishing the plurality of IP connections according to claim 1, the setup signaling message comprising a user-to-network interface protocol message.
- 8. A method for establishing a guaranteed quality of service Internet protocol (IP) connection between an originating end-system and a limited access destination end-system, through a switched transport network, the originating end-system being connectable to the switched transport network and an IP network via an interworking function (IWF) device, the method comprising:
receiving an initiating signaling message, directed through the IP network from the originating end-system to the destination end-system; associating a switched transport network address and an IP network address of the IWF device, in response to the first initiating signaling message, without communicating with an address server; assigning a new IP address to the originating end-system, the new IP address correlating with the destination end-system; and establishing an IP connection over the switched transport network, between the originating end-system and destination end-system, in response to a setup signaling message directed to the switched transport network address of the IWF device and the new IP address.
- 9. The method for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 8, in which each of the initiating signaling message includes at least one predetermined quality of service parameter, which is passed to the setup signaling message, the IP connection being established in accordance with the at least one predetermined quality of service parameter.
- 10. The method for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 9, in which the at least one predetermined quality of service parameter comprises a bandwidth.
- 11. A method for implementing a guaranteed quality of service short-cut Internet protocol (IP) connection between an originating host device and a destination host device having limited accsess, through a switched transport network, the originating host device communicating with an originating bridging device connectable to the switched transport network and an IP network, the method comprising:
receiving a resource reservation protocol (RSVP) path message from the originating host device, the path message including a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) parameter and being directed to the destination host device; inserting a switched transport network address of the originating bridging device into a transport network address parameter of the path message; forwarding the path message to a destination bridging device, through at least one router in the IP network by default routing, the at least one router passing the path message without modifying the transport network address parameter; forwarding the path message to the destination host device; receiving an RSVP reservation request message from the destination host device, the reservation request message including a DHCP response to the DHCP parameter, each DHCP response comprising a new address, temporarily assigned to the originating host device and acceptable by the destination host device; forwarding a setup message to the originating bridging device, through at least one switching device in the switched transport network, based on the originating bridging device address retrieved from the transport network address parameter and the newly assigned address of the originating host device, the setup message including the reservation request message generated by the destination host device; and establishing the short-cut IP connection between the originating host device and the destination host device through the switching network in response to the setup message.
- 12. The method for implementing the guaranteed quality of service short-cut IP connection according to claim 11, further comprising:
including at least one quality of service connection parameter in a QoS parameter of the path message received from the originating host device; including the QoS parameter in each of the reservation request messages generated by the destination host device; and establishing the short-cut IP connection in accordance with each of the at least one quality of service connection parameters.
- 13. The method for implementing the guaranteed quality of service short-cut IP connection according to claim 12, the at least one quality of service connection parameter comprising a bandwidth.
- 14. The method for implementing the guaranteed quality of service short-cut IP connection according to claim 11, the destination host device comprising one of a secure network device and a private network device.
- 15. A system for establishing a guaranteed quality of service Internet protocol (IP) connection between an originating host device and a destination host device through a switched transport network, the system comprising:
at least one destination bridging device that associates a switched transport network address and an IP address of an originating bridging device, without communicating with an address server, in response to a path message directed to the destination host device through an IP network, and that receives a new IP address, assigned to the originating host device in association with the destination host device; wherein the IP connection is established between the originating host device and the destination host device through the switched transport network, in response to a setup signaling message directed to the switched transport network address of the originating bridging device, the setup signaling message corresponding to the newly assigned IP address.
- 16. The system for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 15, the newly assigned IP address being recognizable by at least one of a private network and a secure network, associated with the destination host device.
- 17. The system for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 15, the setup message including at least one predetermined bidirectional flow parameter received from the corresponding path message, wherein the IP connection is established in accordance with the at least one bidirectional flow parameter.
- 18. The system for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 15, the switched transport network comprising one of an asynchronous transport mode (ATM) network and a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network.
- 19. A system for establishing a guaranteed quality of service Internet protocol (IP) connection between an originating end-system and a limited access destination end-system through a switched transport network, the system comprising:
an originating interworking function (IWF) device that inserts its switched transport network address into a first data field of each path message of a resource reservation protocol (RSVP) path message, directed to the destination end-systems, and forwards the path message through at least one router in an IP network by default routing, the at least one router passing the path message without modifying the first data field; and a destination IWF device that receives the path message, retrieves the switched transport network address from the first data field, forwards the path message to the destination end-system, and receives a new IP address, assigned to the originating end-system for accessing the destination end-system; wherein the destination IWF device forwards a setup message, directed to the newly assigned IP address, to the originating IWF device through at least one switching device in the switched transport network, based on the switched transport network address of the originating IWF device retrieved from the path message, the setup message including an RSVP reservation request message generated by the destination end-system in response to the path message; and wherein the IP connection is established between the originating end-system and the destination end-system, through the first bridging device, in response to the setup message.
- 20. The system for establishing the guaranteed quality of service IP connection according to claim 19, wherein at least one quality of service connection parameter is included in a second data field of the path message and passed to the reservation request message included in the setup massage; and
wherein the IP connection is established in accordance with the at least one quality of service connection parameter.
- 21. The system for establishing the IP connection according to claim 20, the at least one quality of service connection parameter comprising a bandwidth.
- 22. A system for providing guaranteed quality of service Internet protocol (IP) sessions through an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network, the system comprising:
an originating interworking function (IWF) device that receives a resource reservation protocol (RSVP) path message from an originating end-system, inserts its ATM address into a transport network address parameter of the path message and forwards the path message to a destination end-system through an IP network, which does not modify the transport network address parameter, the path message including at least one parameter defining the quality of service and a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) parameter; a destination IWF device that forwards the path message to the destination end-system, which responds with an RSVP reservation request message that includes the at least one quality of service parameter, and a DHCP response to the DHCP parameter, the DHCP response comprising a new IP address assigned to the originating host device; wherein the second IWF device launches a setup message through the ATM network, based on the ATM address of the originating IWF device in the transport network address parameter, the setup message including the reservation request message; and wherein the originating IWF device establishes a switched virtual circuit (SVC) connection between the originating IWF device and the destination IWF device, according to the at least one quality of service parameter, and forwards the reservation request message to the originating end-system to establish an IP session between the originating end-system and destination end-system, using the newly assigned address and the SVC connection.
- 23. Computer data signaling, embodied on a propagation medium, that enables a guaranteed quality of service Internet protocol (IP) connection across a switched transport network between an originating host device and a limited access destination host device, through a first bridging device and a second bridging device, the computer data signaling comprising:
a first path message signal that is received from the originating host device, the path message signal including an address parameter for the first bridging device, an IP address of the originating host device and a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) parameter; a second path message signal that is forwarded through an IP network without modification to the address parameter, the second path message signal including a switched transport network address of the first bridging device in the address parameter, the IP address of the originating host device and the DHCP parameter; a reservation request message signal that is received from the destination host device in response to the second path message signal, each reservation request message signal including the IP address of the originating host device and a DHCP response to the DHCP parameter, the DHCP response including a unique newly assigned IP address for the originating host device; a first setup message signal that is forwarded through the switched transport network to the transport network address of the first bridging device, retrieved from the second path message signal, the first setup message signal including the corresponding reservation request message signal; and a second setup message signal that establishes the IP connection, the second setup message signal including the reservation request message signal, the IP connection corresponding to the second setup message signal being forwarded to the newly assigned IP address of the originating host device included in the reservation request message signal.
- 24. The computer data signaling according to claim 23, the first path message signal, the second path message signal and the reservation request message signal further including at least one bidirectional flow parameter that defines at least one predetermined quality of service attribute of the IP connection, wherein the IP connection is established in accordance with the quality of service attribute.
- 25. The computer data signaling according to claim 24, wherein the at least one quality of service attribute comprises a bandwidth.
- 26. The computer data signaling according to claim 23, the first path message signal, the second path message signal and the reservation request message signal further including a reverse charging parameter, wherein accounting data for the IP connection is associated with the originating host device when the reverse charging parameter is activated and with the destination host device when the reverse charging parameter is not activated.
- 27. The computer data signaling according to claim 23, first path message signal, the second path message signal and the reservation request message signals complying with a resource reservation protocol (RSVP).
- 28. The computer data signal according to claim 23, the first setup message signal and the second setup message signal complying with a user-to-network interface (UNI) protocol.
- 29. The computer data signaling according to claim 28, the switched data transport network comprising one of an asynchronous transport mode (ATM) network and a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network.
- 30. The computer data signaling according to claim 23, the newly assigned IP address correlating to at least one of a private network and a secure network that includes the destination host device.
