Claims
- 1. A method for coin access control in a coin-counting device, the method comprising:
- providing a lock, restricting access to counted coins in said coin-counting device;
- detecting a first opening of said lock;
- automatically recording, in said coin-counting device, a time of opening said lock, onto a data recording medium which is located in said coin-counting device,
- detecting a second opening of said lock;
- automatically recording, in said coin-counting device, a time of said second opening of said lock, onto said data recording medium; and
- transmitting, to a central computing facility, data representing at least said time of said first opening of said lock and said time of said second opening of said lock, following said step of detecting said second opening of said lock, without the need for moving said data recording medium from said coin-counting device to said central computing facility.
- 2. A method, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:
- receiving input of identity information identifying an entity opening said lock;
- recording said identity information.
- 3. A method, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:
- receiving a password;
- comparing said password to a list of acceptable passwords
- preventing opening of said lock and requesting another entry of a password when the received password does not match a password in said list of acceptable passwords; and
- permitting entry when an entered password matches a password in said list of acceptable passwords.
- 4. Apparatus which receives desired coins and other items, comprising:
- at least a first means for separating one or more of said other items from at least some said desired coins in the absence of separating paper currency from said desired coins for discrimination by a currency discriminator;
- at least first openable means for restricting access to the interior of said apparatus;
- means for automatically recording, in said apparatus which receives desired coins and other items, a time of a first opening of said first means onto a data recording medium which is located in said apparatus which receives desired coins and other items, and for automatically recording, in said apparatus which receives desired coins and other items, a time of a second opening of said first means, onto said data recording medium; and
- means for transmitting, to a central computing facility, data representing at least said time of said first opening of said first means and said time of said second opening of said first means, following said second opening of said first means, without the need for moving said data recording medium from said apparatus which receives desired coins and other items to said central computing facility.
- 5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4, further comprising:
- a housing, having an exterior and defining a housing interior;
- an input region for receiving a plurality of said desired coins which are randomly oriented, said input region being accessible from the exterior of said housing;
- a coin discriminator for discriminating coins;
- an information output device which outputs information indicative of a value of coins discriminated by said discriminator;
- a receptacle for holding coins discriminated by said discriminator;
- said coin discriminator and said receptacle positioned in the interior of said housing.
- 6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4, further comprising:
- housing means, having an exterior and defining a housing interior;
- an input means for receiving a plurality of said desired coins which are randomly oriented, said input means being accessible from the exterior of said housing;
- means for discriminating coins;
- means for outputting information indicative of a value of coins discriminated by said discriminator;
- receptacle means for holding coins discriminated by said discriminator
- said coin discriminator means and said receptacle means positioned in the interior of said housing.
- 7. Apparatus, as claimed in claim 4, further comprising:
- an input tray pivotable about an axis;
- a coin discriminator;
- a transport which facilitates coin movement along a path from said input tray to said coin discriminator;
- a receptacle which receives at least some coins discriminated by said coin discriminator;
- wherein said means for restricting access includes a housing configured to restrict access to at least said receptacle.
- 8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 7 further comprising a second means for restricting access, for locking said receptacle.
- 9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8 further comprising said second means for restricting access being different from said first means for restricting access whereby at least some personnel have access to the interior of said apparatus in the absence of having access to said receptacle.
- 10. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 further comprising a second means for restricting access, for locking said receptacle means.
- 11. Apparatus as claimed in claim 10 further comprising said second means for restricting access being different from said first means for restricting access whereby at least some personnel have access to the interior of said apparatus in the absence of having access to said receptacle.
- 12. A method usable in connection with coin discrimination in the absence of separating and discriminating paper currency, the method comprising:
- receiving, in a first remote station, a plurality of desired coins and other items;
- separating one or more of said other items from at least some of said desired coins;
- placing at least some said desired coins in a receptacle;
- restricting access to said receptacle using at least a first lock for a housing holding said receptacle; and
- automatically recording, in said first remote station, a time of a first opening of said first lock onto a data recording medium which is located in said first remote station,
- detecting a second opening of said first lock;
- automatically recording, in said first remote station, a time of said second opening of said first lock, onto said data recording medium; and
- transmitting, to a central computing facility, data representing at least said time of said first opening of said first lock and said time of said second opening of said first lock, following said step of detecting said second opening of said first lock, without the need for moving said data recording medium from said first remote station to said central computing facility.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12, further comprising:
- providing a housing, having an exterior and defining a housing interior;
- receiving said plurality of desired coins, which are randomly oriented in an input region accessible from the exterior of said housing;
- moving coins from said input region to a coin discriminator;
- outputting information indicative of a value of coins discriminated by said discriminator;
- wherein said step of placing comprises moving coins discriminated by said discriminator to a receptacle,
- wherein said coin discriminator and said receptacle are positioned in the interior of said housing; and
- wherein said step of restricting access comprises restricting access to the interior of said housing.
- 14. A method, as claimed in claim 13, wherein said step of restricting access includes restricting access by an ordinary user but permitting some access by persons selected from the group consisting of store personnel monetary transfer service personnel service personnel, repair personnel, maintenance personnel and counter apparatus operating company personnel.
- 15. A method, as claimed in claim 13, further comprising receiving an authenticating input and wherein said step of restricting access includes a step for restricting access depending on the type of accessing individual indicated by said authenticating input.
- 16. A method, as claimed in claim 12, further comprising providing a second lock, locking said receptacle.
- 17. A method, as claimed in claim 16, further comprising said second lock being different from said first lock, whereby at least some personnel have access to the interior of said housing, in the absence of having access to said receptacle.
- 18. A coin handling apparatus comprising:
- housing means defining an interior;
- an input means, accessible from the exterior of said housing, for receiving a plurality of randomly oriented coins of arbitrary denomination and of unknown value;
- coin discriminator means for discriminating at least some of said coins to determine a total value;
- an output means for outputting a value related to said total value;
- receptacle means, in said housing interior, for holding coins after discrimination;
- a first access restriction means, for restricting access to said housing interior;
- a second access restriction means, different from said first access restriction means, restricting access to said receptacle, whereby at least some personnel have access to the interior of said housing, in the absence of having access to said receptacle;
- means for automatically recording, in said coin handling apparatus, a time of a first opening of said first access restriction means onto a data recording medium which is located in said coin handling apparatus, and for automatically recording, in said coin handling apparatus, a time of a second opening of said first access restriction means, onto said data recording medium; and
- means for transmitting, to a central computing facility, data representing at least said time of said first opening of said first access restriction means and said time of said second opening of said first access restriction means, following said second opening of said first access restriction means, without the need for moving said data recording medium from said coin handling apparatus to said central computing facility.
- 19. A coin handling method comprising:
- providing a housing, defining an interior;
- receiving, in an input region, accessible from the exterior of said housing, a plurality of randomly oriented coins of arbitrary denomination and of unknown value;
- discriminating at least some of said coins to determine a total value;
- outputting a value related to said total value;
- holding coins in a receptacle, in said housing interior, after said step of discriminating;
- restricting access to said housing interior with a first lock;
- restricting access to said receptacle with a second lock, different from said first lock whereby at least some personnel have access to the interior of said housing, in the absence of having access to said receptacle;
- automatically recording, in said housing, a time of a first opening of said first lock onto a data recording medium which is located in said housing,
- detecting a second opening of said first lock;
- automatically recording, in said housing, a time of said second opening of said first lock, onto said data recording medium; and
- transmitting, to a central computing facility, data representing at least said time of said first opening of said first lock and said time of said second opening of said first lock, following said step of detecting said second opening of said first lock, without the need for moving said data recording medium from said housing to said central computing facility.
